Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55036831 Bullshit. There's a very simple reason sodium ion batteries are not used in cellphones, power tools, basically everything... Because the current technology is very new and they are just commercializing it this year? As with any new tech -- we will have to see how it does in real life, but if it pans out it will certainly displace lithium is a number of applications. It won't matter to Americans. Democrats will mandate zero emissions, China-only component supply with government employees as the only priority. Conservative Christian heterosexuals will be banned from anything resembling freedom of movement or access to any part of infrastructure supply chains. Also, we will be dealing with radioactive craters where our asshole blue cities used to be. The only sodium ion tech we will be worrying about is getting enough salt to eat. --------------- Don't care. Still voting Trump! ---------- |

I think peroxide and a catalyst to produce steam like the V2 rocket could work also. Use a steam turbine to generate electricity for power. Peroxide is liquid and would not need a reinforced tank like hydrogen storage. Peroxide could also be pumped from existing fueling stations. He has masters in elctrical engineering The actor and comedian behind the popular Mr. Bean character has called on drivers to hold off buying an electric vehicle (EV), saying the environmental benefits do not stack up. Quoting: Coastie Patriot Rowan Atkinson, a long-time motor enthusiast with a degree and master’s in electrical engineering, said current EV technology was more harmful to the environment than it was worth. “Increasingly, I’m feeling that our honeymoon with electric cars is coming to an end, and that’s no bad thing: we’re realising that a wider range of options need to be explored if we’re going to properly address the very serious environmental problems that our use of the motor car has created,” Atkinson wrote in The Guardian newspaper. He pointed to figures released by automotive giant Volvo revealing that greenhouse gas emissions during the EV production process were 70 percent higher than building a petrol car. “How so?” Atkinson said. “The problem lies with the lithium-ion batteries fitted currently to nearly all-electric vehicles: they’re absurdly heavy, huge amounts of energy are required to make them, and they are estimated to last only upwards of 10 years. He also pointed to current efforts to develop newer technologies, like solid-state batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, and synthetic fuels, but noted more time was needed before they became mainstream. Atkinson said a bigger problem beyond technology was the current three-year leasing model for car ownership, where owners move onto a new car at the end of the timeframe. “This seems an outrageously profligate use of the world’s natural resources when you consider what great condition a three-year-old car is in,” Atkinson said, saying owners could just learn to use their cars for longer instead, effectively lowering demand for new vehicles. Benefits dont add up. He has masters in elctrical engineering The degrees for Electrical Engineering are often WEAK in background. I'll explain. Electrical Engineering is generation, distribution to loads...with different draws and modes, but mostly about heavy load work. Such education is useful, but the degree MUST be refined into at least 20th century relevance as ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING. That is defined as as mastering the myriad complex applications using electron control devices. These are applied everywhere since 1870s, first big one was carbon granule microphone used for telephony on DC circuit. Much more significant was Lee DeForest's triode, with actual voltage gain. With that began "active" device applications, yet EE degrees now leave graduates with massive knowledge gaps in understanding technology. But he's correct, the energy density and costs MIGHT make sense for some people, but actually environmentally negated by the current gluttonous model of leasing vehicles or buying new every 3-4 years. Even EE degrees are now compromised by political pressure. |

Also, charging batteries requires electricity, very often generated by oil, gas or coal fired power plants. No conversion process is 100% efficient, either. You potentially need MORE fossil fuels through the chain of energy production for vehicles as a result than if you just built the damn things with a conventional internal combustion engine. The only way it works is with a huge investment in new nuclear power plants, and there's no political will to allow that. |

One EV car blew up so explosively, the garage door blasted off across the street Yep.. this is why my solar is still using lead-acid. (It would use Iron Nickel if I could find a reasonable price for them - last forever, but you need to do electroyite changes, and its basically the same stuff Edison developed, so you lose 30% on charging ... so not very efficient) The Lithium stuff is inherently volatile. It requires a charge controller - electronics- to make sure it is not subjected to things that make it loose stability. And the Batts have a life of 16 years? You seriously expect the charge controller will last that long? Most internet companies replace servers after 5-7 years because they know the capacitors and other components will fail.. Most of the time such a failure will result in the battery simply not charging. But who wants to play that game where the failure allows a dangerous condition to occur? |

But Alcohol is a perfectly viable fuel - not as energy dense as gasoline.. Using food - like corn to make alcohol is wasteful, but if you had a yeast that went after chlorophyll? Pretty much any yard waste would do. ( the danger her of course the stuff gets loose and attacks living plants, or does so well that it puts alcohol in all of our soils... but I was never able to find enough out about this lab grown stuff to determine what risks it might pose. The Hydrogen Paste in the link I posted is just as viable. It gives us a method to store H2 as a fuel easily. And we literally have oceans of the stuff. Which is why you know that tech is going nowhere. |

The only way it works is with a huge investment in new nuclear power plants, and there's no political will to allow that. Gasoline engines are actually only about 30% efficient. Most of the fuel just creates heat energy that is then lost in the radiator. There are piezoelectric panles than can convert heat differences to electric power, but they are too expensive and inefficient to incorporate into the radiator design - otherwise some of that energy could be captured for a hybrid vehicle. Overall the efficiency losses in the electric plant's fuel conversion, generator, transmission and battery charging/discharging are probably less than those seen in a gasoline engine. But as you point out, they aren't trivial either. |
