Awsome! Quoting: dofzioni was too ac pretty cool i never seen them before???!!! It's so fantastic that if a person doesn't actually see this creature it sounds like something from a fairytale. This fish not only flies but it must "hold its breath" for the time it is out of water. It would be no more amazing to see a bird that can swim under the water and hold its breath for 45 seconds. Penguins can swim under water but they can no longer fly. This fish does both! |

Liveleak has a video here: [link to www.liveleak.com] Supposedly it's the longest recorded flight, so if you guys see them flying for longer periods of time, tape them, make yourself famous! I'm guessing they'd dry out pretty quick with the wind if they stay aloft too long, they might not be in good shape when they hit the water again. Still, if Hitchcock would have seen a video like this, the movie might have been about fish, not birds... :) Be offended. It's my gift to you. For a few seconds, it means you're awake... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 23141 United States 05/21/2008 12:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Exocoetidae family, actually. They don't actually fly, but use their large pectoral fins to glide. This helps them escape from predators. The way they take off is pretty cool. They swim as fast as they can with their pecs folded, jump up out of the water, unfold their pecs, and then use their tail (the lower lobe is the bigger one) to give them the final boost. The fact that the lower part of the tail provides a lot of force even with the rest of the fish above the water results in a very high thrust-to-drag ratio which allows the fish to get tremendous airborne speeds. I've seen a lot of flying fish from a boat, but never airborne for more than about ten seconds, and I don't ever remember seeing them thrashing their tail in the water during flight to give them more distance. |
