My wife worked for McAffee in the early days, before the business went big-time. This was probably the late 80's or early 90's. She spoke well of him because he stuck up for the phone support folks when customers would verbally abuse them, telling abusive customers "I don't want your business!" and slamming down the phone. As a phone support gal, she liked that.

Funny thing, she mentioned during this era a lot of computer viruses and malware were comming out of Holland... and during the same time period, she had knowledge of large sums of money going from McAffee to Dutch accounts. Coincidence? Hmmm.

John McAffee was one of the founders of what later became the cybersecurity industry, and one of the few private individuals to claim that sort of grubstake. He was known as a shrewd individual, who rarely passed up an advantage that it was within his means to take.

For years I've wondered if those countless computers running McAffee anti-virus were opening back-doors or actually sending info back to McAffee HQ where it was sifted for actionable "intelligence", aka "dirt". I wouldn't put it past McAffee to do something like this, though I would find it surprising for it to remain hidden all these years.

Cybersecurity folks are cagey and suspicious by nature, they always have to look at things from the bad guy's perspective and try to find the chinks in the armor before the bad guys do. This doesn't just relate to tech, it colors their entire outlook on life. For example, at my most recent former employer, the entire cybersecurity team quit (like, six guys I believe) when told "no jab, no job". Probably because they smelled a rat, and wondered what was in those jabs that they weren't allowed to question, or see the research on, or have to wait 99 years to get the documentation on. They were no dummies, again, they are trained to look at the world from a bad guy's perspective and find the vulnerabilities.

So, did McAffee have a treasure trove of confidential information that he could leverage... for what purpose, we can only speculate?

The 10 days of darkness or what I liked to call it ten days of stupid was also launched by crazy Candace. I shut that one down in 2010 with some of the greatest work I have done to date.
