Puppy that bit baby is killed

The puppy that seriously injured a 1-month-old baby has been killed at the request of its owner, the child's mother.

Belinda C. Lewis, Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control director, said Monday the puppy will be tested for rabies, standard practice after a dog that bites someone is euthanized. Given the seriousness of the bites, Lewis said the puppy, a 6-month-old poodle-terrier mix, would likely have been killed even if the child's mother, Nicole M. Hemmick, hadn't requested it.

Antonio Ojeda suffered serious groin wounds Sunday, according to a report from Fort Wayne Police Officer Anthony R. Forte.

Hemmick, who has an overnight job, said she discovered the baby bleeding in her apartment when she woke up about 1 p.m. Sunday. Hemmick rushed Antonio to St. Joseph Hospital, and he later underwent surgery at Lutheran Hospital.

Lewis said no law was broken if the bite occurred indoors, and owners are usually allowed to quarantine pets for 10 days in their home if no children are at risk. In cases in which someone is mauled, the shelter at 3020 Hillegas Road usually holds pets until an investigation is completed, Lewis said.

When pets that are allowed to roam - a violation of state and local law - bite someone outside, they are typically quarantined for 10 days at the shelter. Among the exceptions: if the bites are severe, the dog has bitten before and if the pet's owner requests it be killed.

Lewis recommended obedience training for all dogs and discourages leaving dogs alone with young children. “There are just too many things that can go wrong,” she said.
