Look, I get it. I means "tough." But Why?

What is an ard? What is the apostrophe...apostrophying exactly? Why is it well? Is there anyone who can make sense of this for me?

Or is this just the most senseless phrase ever?

Well hard, as in hard as nails. Chadism basically, but it's usually meant sarcastically. Like most things English.

Do you at it like a name
"Wellard" altogether

Or do you say it like
WELL ARRD like a pirate

Or just WELL HARD but yet work twice as hard to not say the H in hard so it feels like your stroking a little bit and others might discern the same?
