That ship was cited last year for propulsion problems and has had several other citations.

They said the ship had lost power several times while sitting at the dock.

How they could depart without getting to the bottom of that issue?

And given that issue, to not have tug boat escort out of the area is just nuts.

Re: Shipping container just hit supports Beam for a Bridge in Maryland and completely destroys it it collapsed in the sea
wow what BS stories they are selling.

1st there is n way a MayDay call worked and the workers stopped traffic. if they did, why are the missing? they can't run off the bridge from the middle fast enuf.

2nd, if the survivor did as they said. he ran to the end to stop traffic, then why did he then get into the water? if he ran, he woulda ran til he was safe. so did he stop traffic where the bridge broke? then those vars would b in the water too. still musta been Superman to run that far that fast. but then was dumb enuf to jump in the water...?

3rd. at 430 am divers and an ROV were ordered. so the search would b started with divers bout day light. ppl wear seatbelts today, they don't float away from cars. how come no bodies have been located all day? this defies logic. not 1 body recovered or found. just 2 ppl that survived. a blind person coulda located a car/ truck by now.

the more stories they try to sell us m the more i start to wonder what are they really hiding?

just imagine what effect on the economy if the truth was a terror attack and they told the public? how many bridge would ppl refuse to go over tomorrow? how many lead into places like NYC,LA, NO, all over FL, etc.

To answer question 2, from the deck, yu cannot see the underslung trusses of the approaches to the main span.

He may have thought he was clear of the balanced cantilever portion of the bridge when he was not.

Re: Shipping container just hit supports Beam for a Bridge in Maryland and completely destroys it it collapsed in the sea
I’m a bridge engineer and have worked on some major bridge crossings similar to this. My initial thoughts were “weren’t there any dolphins in front of the piers?” Any bridge like this should have “dolphins” placed maybe a couple hundred feet from the piers to take the impact of a ship instead of the piers getting hit. After looking at the videos this morning, I do see the dolphins on each side of the piers. But, the ship is angled in such a manner as to avoid the dolphin. The sped-up video clearly shows the ship maneuvering hard to avoid the dolphin so that it can make a direct impact on the pier. This was definitely not an accident. It would take skill to get that ship to hit the pier but avoid the dolphin.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 86330182

Right on. I need to see these dolphins after reading this and ...

I was listening to Philly KYW 1060 AM Radio news today and the engineer in charge of the Delaware Memorial Bridge was being interviewed.

He said the dolphins saved the Del Mem Bridge in 1969 when barge collided with them and caused 7 million dollars worth of damage, but didn't destroy the bridge.

He also said they are in year 2 of building stone sheaths in the river around the footings of the Del Mem Bridge, because the dolphins aren't adequate to handle the size and speed of today's container ships.

My late dad loved the Francis Scott Key bridge. Fort McHenry was his favorite day trip, and he loved taking us to the inner harbor. The tunnel is so cool, too.

Everything was nice and new in the early 80s - the aquarium was just built.

He liked everything about ports ... the cranes especially. There are a lot of ports here in NJ and if he saw the cranes operating, he'd stop and watch.

It was really sad watching how quickly it crumbled. Amazing and sad. Obviously it wasn't super sturdy ... but it was a great bridge with great views.

The 2 experts on shipping said that the ship's engine had also stopped when the lights went out. (Not sure how they can tell, but they both have spent a lifetime aboard large merchant ships, and I haven't) And they did not restart after that. The black belching smoke was from the backup generator according to them.

They were thinking that the fuel should be tested, in case other ships might have gotten bad fuel. This was a real problem at another location they mentioned.

That is true. Frequently water lines, sewer lines, gas lines etc are run on the undercarriage of a bridge.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 86540418

All it takes to read the specs installing water, sewer and gas lines on bridges is a quick search But we know you’re too lazy.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 86540418

Sewage is not water and water is not gas. Read your own source and you'll see why it's not done [EPA regs] as it specifically only mentions smaller bridges crossing a "STREAM, STEEP HILL, HIGHWAY OR RAILWAY" and not a 1200' span crossing a major high-traffic waterway.
 Quoting: GSB/LTD

The Galveston island causeway carries water, sewer and natural gas. Of course not all in the same pipeline.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 86540418

A causeway is not a bridge, it is an embankment that spans a body of water. Bridges are elevated structures that rise well above the water's surface.

They both said it was highly unlikely there was any foul play.

they explain in the video the reasoning.

They were having power outages while still at the dock.
The captain should have refused to take the ship out in that condition. Needed to troubleshoot the electrical problem.

If you want to place blame, I think that is where it belongs.

The outage occurred when there was not enough time to do a restart. They also in my opinion screwed up by deploying an anchor. (Not enough time and sea-room to set an anchor on that size ship).

The port pilot should have been handling the vessel.
