Canine Kidney Disease. My 12 year old dog just diagnosed. Any help?
Anyone else been in this boat and have some advice? Or let me know what you’ve done or learned?

Vet to call soon. My 12 year old terrier girl has been at vet now 24 hours. First night without her was tough.

She first got staph, then treated with cyropoint, then developed urinary incontinence. Then they put her on Proin, a drug that helps incontinence. I think her kidney issue was before all of this. She had started Farmers Dog Food before the staph started, then all downhill.

No, I don’t blame any of the food, maybe the drugs.

Just need some help about what to not feed. And what would be good for her. I understand a low protein high carb is needed. She lost 7 pounds since October, 5 months ago. I thought it was the food, but seems it was kidney disease.

Anyway. The vet will tell me something about the food and condition. Waiting for the call now.

www.petwellbeing.com STAT! There is a product for canines called Kidney Support for dogs. Order this. It will help.

I kept a diabetic cat alive for 3 years after diagnosis
of diabetes using these drops. I/We chose to not do
insulin shots. I would research a bit more about the low protein, high-carb diet regimen before going that route.
FROMM pet food is an excellent source of food for cats and dogs, too.

If you choose to go the above suggested plan; do not tell the " Standard " vet of your chosen protocol because they
do not like being upstaged in their ' medical advice .'

'maybe the drugs ' Good possibility.

You can also call/email pet well being and other regimens
may be suggested that may help.
GOOD LUCK . And may your terrier girl be better soon.

99% chances you get a dog in a pine box in return

My 16 yo rescue was diagnosed with this when I got him 2 years ago.

Was told to feed him foods for this disease. He won't eat it.

Came to realize his previous owner (who likely died or just became unable to care for him) gave him a diet of mcdonald's and pizza bites.

He's VERY pick eater...... and changes from day to day. But mostly I just give him mixed meats freeze dried food, or eggs with chicken ........ or some type of Lil Caesar's filet mignon ...... his numbers are still going strong.

Good quality drinking water (not tap water) and you want to minimise the stress on the kidneys. If not on a renal diet, you can get a phosphate binder supplement to add to their meals (Ipakitine). Good quality foods, nothing too rich ideally. Minimise stress as much as possible - high blood pressure will put extra stress on those kidneys. Best of luck.

Farmers Dog, look it up. That is what I feed her and it is high rated and very expensive frozen from slightly cooked fresh meats and vegetables. It was especially made for her size, breed and needs l

And she loves it so much, she barks when I pull out of freezer until in her bowl and on floor.

I will have big problem changing to kibble now. The vet can’t get her to eat. No wonder. Spoiled from Farmers Dog.

.

Incontinence is not kidney issue it’s a connective tissue’s issue.

Some foods n rx drugs may destroy the connective tissue

Pigs feet or ears cooked continuously until all gelatinous stuff is cooked off the bone n becomes hard gelatin when cooled may help restore the connective issue.

You can pour the “soup “ over dogs food or cool it n cut into cubes to feed through the day. Cook n feed this for your dog every day til he stops pissing his bed.

Re: Canine Kidney Disease. My 12 year old dog just diagnosed. Any help?
My Chesapeake Bay Retriever was hours away from getting euthanized for his kidney disease. He was peeing bright red blood. Then my daughter decided to search online for a diet for kidney disease, one that would cleanse the toxins out of his blood. We found one that was for humans, nothing for dogs. I made it for him (with a few tweeks) and his blood red pee cleared up within a 1/2 hour. He lived another year on this diet.

I'll try to find the diet again, this was 15 years ago. I'll post it here if I find it, but really, research "diet for kidney failure" and even if it's for humans, use it.

Besides the low protein diet, if it's anything like feline kidney disease, you give subcutaneous fluids. So learn to like sticking needles in the skin and how to do it yourself at home from your vet. It's not hard if you pet co-operates. Depending on what stage she is in, you might get a few more years from her or only a few weeks. When they quit wanting to eat, it's time. Don't wait til they are skin and bones to put them to sleep, that only makes it harder.

Blood is the urine isn't a sign of kidney disease but likely stones or infection. Kidney disease is failing kidneys unable to remove toxins from the blood which in turn make the animal feel sick and not wanting to eat.

Chronic renal disease cannot be cured. Prognosis is associated with severity of disease. As your dog progresses through stages of renal disease, survival time is likely to grow shorter.

What food brand are they eating?

Go to mamavation . Com and search which foods are extremely toxic for pets

Just found out the food I've been feeding cat which is expensive has metals bpa lead cadmium etc, so NOPE switching to all organic real quick.

Also you need to buy a filter for an automatic dog water bowl and continually buy more filters changing frequently and provide filtered non flouride or tap water.

Its prob the toxic food...Purina is KILLING PETS...by the millions...fda says they aren't...LIES...I used pedigree dry years...made my six dogs lethargic, sick...refuse to eat...switched them to rice, eggs, gravy train and kibbles n bits and they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!!! Theres a long list of brands doing this. Remember the WEF said no pets ? They meant it. Theres a Facebook page called saving our pets one at a time ....with hundreds and hundreds of posts about this !!! Many are grieving their pets deaths...STAY AWAY FROM PURINA, THEY MAKE ALPO PLUS OTHER STUFF CHECK THE LABEL...STAY AWAY FROM PEDIGREE, BLUE BUFFALO, DIAMOND, RACHEL RAY, ETC...change your dogs diet to eggs and rice and tuna or chicken and see if that helps. Theres a lot of Herbal kidney helpers too....add a little baking soda to his food too...It stimulates kidneys

My rat terrier was diagnosed with kidney failure 2 years ago. I put him on a kidney specific food, gave him elanapril, and have taken him weekly to the vet for hydration therapy since August of 2022. He’s 17 now and his kidney values are still pretty good. . My vet has a few other clients( cats and dogs) that go in for the hydration therapy and it helps keeps the kidneys flushed out and working

Its just saline solution issued subQ.

You can do it yourself, it’s very easy if you have a willing dog.

Support her liver with standard process canine hepatic support. Petwellbeing also has a milk thistle tincture for dogs. Both companies also make natural renal support products. I've used their products for felines and they are excellent. I've also used epakitin in renal care, idk if dogs can take it, but you can ressarch it.

Liver support is very beneficial.
