Food Safety- Salmonella, tomatoes and vegetables
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a type of bacterium. The type of Salmonella causing illness in this outbreak, Salmonella Saintpaul, is relatively uncommon. Fruits and vegetables that come into contact with Salmonella may become contaminated with it, causing illness if eaten. Salmonella lives in the intestinal tracts of some animals, and can live in soil and water for months. Once Salmonella has contaminated something, it can be spread from surface to surface. A tomato contaminated with Salmonella can spread the bacterium to the hands of a person who cuts the tomato and to the cutting board on which the tomato is sliced, for example. Cooking those tomatoes won't necessarily kill the bacterium.

Consumers are advised not to try to peel raw red plum, red Roma, or raw red round tomatoes that have not been ruled out as the source of the outbreak. Consumers should throw these tomatoes out. Peeling a tomato that is contaminated on the outside would be likely to spread the contamination to the inside. Also, if the contamination is already on the inside, peeling will not remove it.

"Tomatoes are out. Probably. Now jalapeno peppers are under investigation. Or maybe it’s the cilantro. How about this: maybe there is no “salmonella outbreak” at all, just a publicity-driven chatter emerging from the normal epidemiological background noise. Now that so many growers and distributors have lost so much money, and the “liberal interest groups” have invested their credibility, we will never see a withdrawal of the allegations. Instead there will be pressure for more government regulation. Yeah. That’ll fix the problem — if it never existed in the first place."

"The produce industry, which has sustained heavy financial losses in the continuing salmonella outbreak, has made an overture to the federal government in hopes of finding a better way to track down the source of foodborne illnesses.
As of Thursday, 922 people have been infected with a rare strain of salmonella in over 40 states and the District of Columbia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The outbreak of salmonella saintpaul was originally linked solely to certain types of tomatoes. But over the weekend investigators broadened their search to look at foods eaten in conjunction with tomatoes.

The Produce Marketing Association in Newark, Del., has sent the Food and Drug Administration a letter requesting a meeting to "figure out how to do this better," says Kathy Means, the group's vice president of government relations.

"It's taking too long to find it, we're going down too many roads. What do we need to do better, so that when something like this happens again, we'll be prepared?" she says."

What can I do to prevent salmonellosis?

-Cook poultry, ground beef, and eggs thoroughly. Do not eat or drink foods containing raw eggs, or raw (unpasteurized) milk.
-If you are served undercooked meat, poultry or eggs in a restaurant, don't hesitate to send it back to the kitchen for further cooking.
-Wash hands, kitchen work surfaces, and utensils with soap and water immediately after they have been in contact with raw meat or poultry.
-Be particularly careful with foods prepared for infants, the elderly, and the immunocompromised.
-Wash hands with soap after handling reptiles, birds, or baby chicks, and after contact with pet feces.
-Avoid direct or even indirect contact between reptiles (turtles, iguanas, other lizards, snakes) and infants or immunocompromised persons.
-Don't work with raw poultry or meat, and an infant (e.g., feed, change diaper) at the same time.
-Mother's milk is the safest food for young infants. Breastfeeding prevents salmonellosis and many other health problems.

How common is salmonellosis?

Every year, approximately 40,000 cases of salmonellosis are reported in the United States. Because many milder cases are not diagnosed or reported, the actual number of infections may be thirty or more times greater. Salmonellosis is more common in the summer than winter.

Children are the most likely to get salmonellosis. The rate of diagnosed infections in children less than five years old is about five times higher than the rate in all other persons. Young children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised are the most likely to have severe infections. It is estimated that approximately 400 persons die each year with acute salmonellosis.

Who knows for certain, but I'm thinking no, since I haven't heard of really much of any deaths... like July 4 it was reported that 1 guy in his 80's "died" from salmonella related complications...

Maybe it's just within the normal bounds and we're being distracted from something else???

and your fruits... and your hands OFTEN while cooking.
Don't use a board used to cut raw meat without throughly washing it with HOT water and soap prior to cutting anything else.
WASH HANDS OFTEN WHILE COOKING AND PREPARING FOOD.

..sounds to me that people, because of rising food prices, are buying canned salsa imported from south of the
border...i have personally witnessed vegetables being irrigated with diverted sewer water over there.

We irrigate much of our crops with recycled water also. There just isn't enough to go around in California.

Of course, they tell you not to drink recycled water, but the plants and animals that we consume can't read. Therefore we end up eating that which is grown or fed with nutrients that are believed to be contaminated. Brilliant!

Did you know that a lot of recycled water is also used as injection water into the San Diego and Los Angeles water table to help keep the salinity down?
