RE: Hopi Mythologies and Climate Change
We have followed with a great interest your debate about the Hopi mythology and the expectation of the 5th 'new world' to be emerging after our current, fourth one.
We would like to very much get in touch with the experts on Hopi and their national representatives on this very issue.
We would like to guide you back to the roots in your debate to the ancient "Prophecy Rock" which is a petroglyph symbolising the Hopi prophesies and worldview. The lower road is the narrow path of continuous Life in harmony with our physical and social environment of which Hopi are famous with their environmental concern and pacifism.

"The large human figure on the left is the Great Spirit. The bow in his left hand represents his instructions to the Hopi to lay down their weapons. The vertical line to the right of the Great Spirit is a time scale in thousands of years. The point at which the great Spirit touches the line is the time of his return."
Hopi's Prophecy Rock with its four mankinds standing on the upper line reflect the four chief eras of humanity until present. Just like in the Biblical illustration of Daniel 2 statute (which crumbles down at the very end of ages), the upper road of the fourth human society begins to crumble.
What could these great four eras of humanity represent in Hopi mythology? Could they be ancient recollections of past climatic experiences? We at FIPC think so.
The first mankind represent the paradisic mythological mankind as fresh from creation which we do not discuss.
The second mankind represent human society before a great glaciation occurred: "... world would spin off its axis and out of control. As it traveled through space, it froze into solid ice, until the twins took up their stations again and restored the Earth to life, creating a Third World."

As read in conjunction with some other Indian mythologies which describe sudden envent that the continent became covered in deep snow that obliterated all topographic signs. FIPC suggest that the second world refers entry into glaciation and the Third World a resurgence from it.
The thire mankind represent third era in humanity which was characterised by the increasing warmth as the ice age ended. It was described as great era of progress and resurgence with urban settlements. The better life became, the warmer the climate was, the more volatile life became as human works often were washed away by the floods.
Finally things got so bad that everything of these achievements were overtaken by the rising sea level:
Sotuknang said ".. Down on the bottom of the seas lie all the proud cities, the worldly treasures corrupted with evil, and those people who found no time to sing praises to the Creator from the tops of their hills. But the day will come, if you preserve the memory and the meaning of your Emergence, when these stepping-stones will emerge again and prove the truth you speak."
The fourth world was established from the escape of rising seas as the great ice packs had receded and climate warmed:
"In the Fourth World, the people had to search long and hard for a place to establish themselves and start over again. They journeyed by boat, paddling uphill from place to place. Whenever they found a beautiful and bounteous place to land, they would be told by Spider Woman that they must move on: this place was too easy..."
Eventually the rise of sea level stopped and the Hopi made a ritual to reclaim all land of the four directions for the fourth humanity. This was by establishing expeditions to west, south, north and east. "They were to separate into different groups, each heading in different directions, to claim all the land for the Creator. Each group would have to 'follow its own star' to a place where the earth met the sea." This broght Hopi to harmony with the sea and land.
We at FIPC recall of the so-called "sunken cities" of Bay of Cambay that shared to fate of the third humanity. These cities are today under some 120 feet of water. Our position is that these cities with bones and belongings still in them resulted from the Laurentide ice sheet slide-out from the Hudson Bay area which is alluded in some other Amerindian native histories.
We at the Frozen Isthmuses' Protection Campaign (FIPC) of the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans are concerned that the melting Arctic Ocean will lead to Type 2 accummulative moulins lubricating Greenland's ice sheet basin to extent that it will simply float on land and slide into the sea. The melting is to be massive after the Arctic Ocean sea ice is lost, which is co-incidentally expected to happen at about 2012. If so, our great cities will be flooded and the fourth humanity in Hopi vision see the human road breaking.
We would like to get urgently in touch with Hopi experts, national tribal representatives and their spiritual leaders as we think, symbolically "these stepping-stones will emerge again and prove the truth you speak", in form of evidence from Bay of Cambay which also flooded when ice melted.
