If dem mountain lions knew that dogs were armed, you could bet dollars to donuts they wouldn't fuck wit 'em so much. |

Because they don't fear us or our noise, and because the cats will stalk you and attack from above where you least expect it. Beautiful creatures yes, but too dangerous to have around humans, especially children. If you are being stalked, make yourself look as large as you can, maybe pull your coat up around shoulders and spread out. If you have a child with you, put the child up on your shoulders. If no weapon, get one - a big thick stick is better than nothing. Sounds like it's time for a hunt in Colorado. |

You're right about humans moving into their territory; there's no room for cougars anywhere on the front range, and this sort of thing only gets more common. I see the value of this advice, tho I'm not much for knives. The hunts are necessary to bring down the numbers. When the overall cat population hits max for the game available in that area , it is usually the young males that move INTO an area already habited by humans as they try to establish their own territory. And they will take children. Other than housepets, kids are the easiest prey. |

I agree, Sireen-reborn, and sadly this problem will never go away. The animal acts out of natural instincts and humans need to take certain precautions when living in their territories. I have always lived in mountainous areas and it is just common sense to bring your pets in at night. These people did but they left a door open. There was the case of the woman in Cool, California who was killed when she was jogging out in the woods and jogged by a mother with babies. It was unfortunate but you just don't go jogging or racing a bike through the woods in cougar and bear country. These animals don't stalk us but will attack when cornered or startled. They generally want to be left alone. It's unfortunate that when the deer population is down that they seek food (our cats and dogs included) in the towns. Also, the very young cougar and the very old cougar are more apt to go after our pets than the healthy adult who is still capable of hunting the deer. Although I hate to see one killed I can understand why the authorities have to take this action in populated areas. It's an unfortunate situation all the way around. The fact is, though, that they would rather avoid us than eat us. More people have been mauled and/or killed by domestic dogs than cougars. Yes, the statistic is skewed because there are many more domestic dogs than cougars. Even so, if adjusted for that, I think it would still hold true. We used to have a female cougar living on our ranch just a few miles from Yosemite. There was a deer run crossing our property and we had two ponds. She had two babies. She never bothered our horses or dogs and we hit upon an agreement of mutual respect. My husband had an unusual rancher attitude. He loved the wildlife. Some ranchers would have shot her on sight. He may have shot her if she had ever attacked the horses but she never did. She seemed to stay away from them. She actually became quite curious about us when she began to trust us and we had many peaceful encounters with her. She would shadow us when we would take our evening walks, sometimes as close as thirty feet or so. She always announced herself when she decided to join our evening walks. Otherwise, she went about her business and we went about ours. And one morning her 2 babies came off the hill above and down to our house. When I saw them I brought our dogs and cats in because I knew she would be close behind. She came down and batted those babies back up the hill, biting and pawing them all the way up. She was one mad mama that her kids had done such a dangerous thing. Knowing that she was there we took all possible precautions. But we felt that we were infringing on her territory, not her on ours. All went well for the years that she was there. |

I was maybe 9 and 11 years old and my dad just let us girls run wild in the woods,we had our hidden tree houses and rock forts all over the place. I think back on those times and think something or someone was watching over us for sure because we made out of that wilderness without even a snake bite. |
