BBC Radio 4 will broadcast live from Cern on 10 September. The Big Bang Day starts in the LHC control room at 0830 BST for the official start-up, and then continues through the day with related programmes, from indepth discussions about particle physics to a special one-off radio version of the popular TV drama Torchwood.

Umm, that`s the problem, if it doesn`t work properly.

I just want ot see the 27km long hole left when it implodes on itself (no black hole... just a hole).

Hmm, a 27 km hole would be very cataclismic not only for the region, even without being black.

I've read a up a bit on this but my question is once they start this thing up and push the power levels, what happens if they get to a point that they have to shut the whole thing down and can't?

CERN announces start-up date for LHC

Geneva, 7 August 2008. CERN has today announced that the first attempt to circulate a beam in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be made on 10 September.
