In terms of the mainstream look at snuff films, you have to go no further than the movie 8MM, which seems like it had a very big story to tell, but at the end they decided to (were forced to?) make a lousy ending.

I think the original movie was supposed to have had Cage's character uncovering a Bohemian Grove/Franklin coverup type of group, who were kidnapping people and making sex slave/snuff films, but someone in Hollywood (take a guess) told them "no way" and the ending had to be changed to the much lamer version we got in the theatrical release.
