Look at this beast! Live Ike Animation From A Naval Satellite: [link to www.nrlmry.navy.mil] Watching Jim Cantore you can taste his frustration. He is almost angry at what is going on. 12-13 hours prior to landfall, with water already flooding some major areas, and folks are sightseeing on the seawall in Galveston!!! I wonder how many GLPtards are on that wall cheering for a Category 4 direct hit? Given the hurricane still has more than 12 hours till landfall, and the eye is more well-defined with convection increasing, Ike will likely achieve CAT 3 status before landfall, and even a borderline CAT 4 cannot be ruled out. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 422855 United Kingdom 09/12/2008 12:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hurricane Ike is closing in on Texas, and stands poised to become one of the most damaging hurricanes of all time. Despite Ike's rated Category 2 strength, the hurricane is much larger and more powerful than Category 5 Katrina or Category 5 Rita. The storm surge from Ike could rival Katrina's, inundating a 200-mile stretch of coast from Galveston to Cameron, Louisiana with waters over 15 feet high. According to the latest wind field estimate (Figure 1), the diameter of Ike's tropical storm and hurricane force winds are 550 and 240 miles, respectively. For comparison, Katrina numbers at landfall were 440 and 210 miles, respectively. Ike's storm surge Gulf-facing coastline San Luis Pass to High Island including Galveston Island... ... 15 to 20 feet Shoreline of Galveston Bay...15 to 25 feet The expected storm surge of 15-20 feet will overtop the city's seawall by six feet, resulting in flooding of the city and a number of major oil refineries. Expect a significant tightening of gas supplies in coming months, due to extensive damage to the oil refineries in the Houston and Port Arthur area. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 422855 United Kingdom 09/12/2008 01:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | GALVESTON, Texas — Twenty-two men aboard a 584-foot freighter adrift in the Gulf of Mexico faced riding out Hurricane Ike if the situation remained too dangerous for a rescue attempt, the Coast Guard said Friday. Chief Petty Officer Mike O'Berry initially said stormy seas would prevent Coast Guard aircraft or vessels from reaching the ship about 90 miles southeast of Galveston. Category 2 Ike's 105-mph winds could cause 50-foot waves, the Coast Guard said. Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald [link to www.youtube.com] |

User ID: 483025 United States 09/12/2008 01:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Cantore is saying that 30,000 people have stayed on Galveston Island. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 484188Jim Cantore says FIFTY PERCENT of the people stayed. Did not leave the Galveston area. I have a feeling we are about to see a major disaster across that whole area. The water height can't be escaped - swimmer or not. Dr Lyons saying waves are around 15' now and will double as the storm moves closer. That is just the waves...not the surge! If they stay and the storm makes it to a 3 and wipes out the town, then I'm not really going to feel very bad for them if they die. It's hard to do when their stupidity was the cause. A voice of reason in a world of woo-woos. |
