Local (Austin) news just reported that quite a few people on Galveston are attempting to leave now.

Reports of 10,000 people without power on Galveston, of course there shouldn't be 10,000 people ON the Island at this time in this situation...but, thats another story.

For me... what's more devestating is that unlike Katrina... the storm surge will occur while the storm is wreaking havoc... they will have no hope of evacuations

At least when the levees failed, Katrina had essentially passed through (some nasty bands were left, but the storm itself was gone), so people could be rescued
