Petroleum coke (often abbreviated petcoke) is a carbonaceous solid derived from oil refinery coker units or other cracking processes.[1] Other coke has traditionally been derived from coal.

Marketable coke is coke that is relatively pure carbon and can be sold for use as fuel (ie fuel grade coke), or for the manufacture of dry cells, electrodes (ie anode grade coke). Needle coke, also called acicular coke, is a highly crystalline petroleum coke used in the production of electrodes for the steel and aluminum industries. Catalyst coke is coke that has deposited on the catalysts used in oil refining, such as those in a fluid catalytic cracker. This coke is impure and is only used for fuel.

Its high heat and low ash content make it a good fuel for power generation in coal fired boilers, but petroleum coke is high in sulfur and low in volatile content which pose some environmental and technical problems with its combustion. In order to meet current North American emissions standards some form of sulfur capture is required. Fluidized bed combustion is commonly used to burn petroleum coke. Gasification is increasingly used with this feedstock (often using gasifiers placed in the refineries themselves).

Calcined petroleum coke, CPC is the product from calcining petroleum coke. This coke is the product of the coker unit in a crude oil refinery. The calcined petroleum coke is used to make anodes for the aluminium, steel and titanium smelting industry. The green coke must have sufficiently low metals content in order to be used as anode material. Green coke with this low metals content is referred to as anode grade coke. The green coke with too high metals content will not be calcined and is used for burning. This green coke is called fuel grade coke.


Pure carbon----is what is onboard.

I work for a coal company. The main difference with petcoke from say Anthracite or Bituminous is the SULPHUR content. Typically between .08% for premium grade up to 3-4%. This isnt a big deal unless it's burned in which case it forms sulphur dioxides. Depending on the grade of material it could be worth up to $350/ton. Id be curious as to what grade and how much is on board. This could be a big hit if it's heading to port for a steel mill or group of mills. They cant run without carbon and petcoke isnt exactly easy to get with winter around the corner and Europe buying alot of South American petcoke up for home heating etc.

Went to Galveston, got our elders and are here in Tomball, near Houston. We are in the country and are currently loading the horses and donkies, into the barn. Wind is picking up, but no rain yet

Actually, CNN was just reporting that they were trying to do the right thing and get out of the way of the storm, but their engines conked out.

Sadly, they also reported that the weather is now too bad for the rescue attempt to continue. The crewmember's voice over the radio that they played sounded panicky. Poor bastard.

I wonder if a US submarine or Russian submarine, assuming any is there, could effect a rescue.

As some people have already said... this tanker was trying to get out of the way, but engines failed... that's why it needed the rescue
