Galveston reports- Katrina II | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 113248 United States 09/14/2008 05:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I feel sorry for them. But they should have left when they told them to. It was only a category 2 when it hit land. I realize the Island was a little more susceptible to damage then the rest of the city. Quoting: Ha Kohane nli 486038The Mayor of Galveston told them NOT TO LEAVE. I have my elderly in-laws here with me now. They live in Galveston (23rd and Ave N). And the information that they are getting from friends and neighbors does not reflect what is being portrayed in the media. I actually spent the day preparing to go to Galveston and secure what is left of their property. So as soon as they let ppl back on the island, I will be there. People not there will not see what's actually happening. Do you have a few first aid supplies for yourself...nothing major, but a few bandaids, peroxide, antibiotic ointment...a lot of trash everywhere ...just in case of cuts or abrasions. Here's an excellent link on survival info.Im wondering with a curfew now being in place, and i've just seen on Fox Fema running outta water and ice at one distribution point, maybe its me,but im wondering if we're about to see a maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaajor blow up. By blow up i mean this: Just saw a 1/2 or 3/4 mile long line for groceries,w/police moderating access to store. We know that nerves fray when the normalcies of life cease, and some nerves quicker and more radical to others. Lack of Gas availability, electricity, potable water, etc, etc. Get my drift? Plus, whats "REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY" up with the lack of cognate cohesive coverage about whats gone down in Galveston Island and Galveston proper? I dunno, looks to me like the ingredients for some real @$%^&!!,if you get my drift. Here's the linky [link to www.beyondweird.com] People are in shock. Instead of getting angry, they are confused first and uncertain. The world as they know it is different now. The rest of world no longer exists in their minds. Survival is the only thing on their mind. Getting gas for the car, in order to drive around and find a station to get gas for the generator. They will get in the long lines and wait their turn. People are very calm. It's not like you think. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 255704Bolivar Peninsula is a little community just east of Galveston after you take the ferry from Galveston. It's a tiny strip of land with water on both sides - the GOM south and a bay behind it. Not sure what the official population was but these communities are all along the coast and mainly cater to people who come there for vacation and have rental homes and condos right on the beach. |

I have 3 families staying in my house right now - my house was one of the lucky ones that did not lose electricity. I was staying at a friend's home when the storm passed and we lost electricity there and it still hasn't been restored. We were flooded in - could drive 2 or 3 blocks in all directions and then would have to stop because of the flooding. We were devastated here when Rita hit, weeks after Katrina. This whole town looked like what Galveston and Houston look like now. We are lucky that Ike stayed far enough west that we only have minimal damage. Things are still a mess though - enforced curfew, flooding, no power... But it could have been so much worse. |

Good luck to you and yours. |

You would think they would have got it right this time. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 502255Quit spinning this into a political debate. It has nothing to do with what side of the Fence you sit on. FEMA is a Bureaucracy. Many chains of command, which leads to layers upon layers of people needed to give a "yes" or "no". FEMA does what a bureaucracy does best, Nothing. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 317795 United States 09/14/2008 06:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It was so nice of OUR newspaper to run the headline this morning that damage from Ike is "Not Too Bad." If you go on to read their story it's filled with but, but, but...detailing awful things. But hey, it's NOT TOO BAD. I guess if you're not there, maybe! Wonder how the Katrina refugees who never left Houston are doing. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 444126 United States 09/14/2008 06:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What is so frustrating is the national evening news is NOT COVERING ANY OF THIS!! Why the media blackout? They are not showing the aerial shots at all. Why won't they say how bad things are? When you watch the local Houston news...and the live coverage... it is complete destruction. The news tonight played it off like basically "gas prices will probably be going up"..."people got a bit of water their homes, but are cleaning up" What the HELL! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 502766I doubt 19,000 ppl died. That would be ridiculous if true. I feel sorry for the coastal communities. Some probably no longer exist! Agreed. Hope would be the other 19,000 already had food, ice or did not/could not get to the distribution point. |

My question is why didn't they turn off the electric grid so that the transformers wouldn't blow and start fires. It seems like a simple thing to do. Anyone know why they wouldn't do that? Obama said that 100,000 homes were lost. If there was one person in 1/4 of the homes... Also, how did I know that Galveston was the target? Check my GLP postings for Sept. 10. |
