Re: Galveston reports- Katrina II
Where exactly is Bolivar Island in relation to Galveston? And was it populated?

Bolivar Peninsula is a little community just east of Galveston after you take the ferry from Galveston. It's a tiny strip of land with water on both sides - the GOM south and a bay behind it. Not sure what the official population was but these communities are all along the coast and mainly cater to people who come there for vacation and have rental homes and condos right on the beach.

Here is the Google map link, you can zoom in or out to see where different communities were located.

Are southerners going to wake up and quit supporting the incompetent GOP? Things are only supposed to get worse in regards to hurricanes, at least get someone in office that gives a fuck.

That's the problem, NONE of them give a fuck about you or I.

This is beyond political ties fool. Political parties do nothing but keep you sheep arguing amongst yourselves while NOTHING gets done.

Oh, you're right...except for the part where BAD things get done! And they do....Patriot Acts I and II, and other malfeasance.

Are there any Google satellite photos yet? I'd look myself but I'm on dial up and it would take forever. Post em if you got em.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 432645

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but, don't wast your time doing the Google satellite. Those images are usually a year or 3 behind the time...Definitely not real time.

However, I do know that Russia at one time did offer semi-real time space imaging of Earth...

Anyone?

I doubt 19,000 ppl died.
That would be ridiculous if true.

I feel sorry for the coastal communities.
Some probably no longer exist!

It said earlier today on KHOU 11 that the beach front has been PERMANENTLY altered....if that is some kind of clue!

What is so frustrating is the national evening news is NOT COVERING ANY OF THIS!!

Why the media blackout? They are not showing the aerial shots at all.

Why won't they say how bad things are? When you watch the local Houston news...and the live coverage... it is complete destruction.

The news tonight played it off like basically "gas prices will probably be going up"..."people got a bit of water their homes, but are cleaning up"

What the HELL!

I grew up visiting my grandparents in Bolivar. I remember the ferry rides out there. This breaks my heart.

Fema is fucking up AGAIN!
-1st responders have no food or water. And I mean no food or water for THEMSELVES.
-Empty buses are driving between Austin and Houston.
-Media Blackout over most of Galveston.
-BOLIVER PENINSULA IS GONE. I'm talking Greensburg Kansas F-5 GONE! There HAVE TO BE MANY DEATHS.
-No word on Nuclear and Biological Labs at UTMB.
-fema has taken over working cell phone towers on Galveston so no residents can call in or out.

This is BAD!

FEMA HAS DONE NOTHING WRONG!

Wonder how the GPL poster from Manvel faired the storm? I hope he made it out OK? He looks like he would have been in a lot of flooding, even though he said he was on high ground. But he never came back to the IKE thread.

Nice footage.....the total flooding usually means a %100 loss....If you look closely, you'll see terrible wind damage also...

That whole area is basically lost.

The only thing missing from this picture, compared to Katrina, is that "mayor" Nagin cursing FEMA.

Never count on the Government then you will never have anything to worry about.
 Quoting: coolhandluke74

Bull crap. Never count on the Government and you will never be disappointed in the Government, but you may still have plenty to worry about. What if no one from the governments showed up period? No one., not one rescuer, not one cop, not one national guard, not one helicopter, throughout the whole gulf coast region... no one from the village, the city, the county, the State, the Federal government showed up at all... imagine that. And imagine if no MSM media showed up at all and no local media.. imagine that for a second. Get some damned perspective on this.

The people have to help the people because there are vastly more people than there are government employees and that includes the N.G. and just for the freaking record, you people ARE a part OF the Governments. So, go on ahead and be pissed at yourselves while you are at it.

I feel sorry for them. But they should have left when they told them to. It was only a category 2 when it hit land. I realize the Island was a little more susceptible to damage then the rest of the city.

The Mayor of Galveston told them NOT TO LEAVE.

I have my elderly in-laws here with me now. They live in Galveston (23rd and Ave N). And the information that they are getting from friends and neighbors does not reflect what is being portrayed in the media.

I actually spent the day preparing to go to Galveston and secure what is left of their property. So as soon as they let ppl back on the island, I will be there.

How do we know for certain that so many people did not leave? I am also very concerned about Biloxi.

What do we know about the unreported loss of life there? Is it that so many are listed as missing, therefore the death s are avoided on a technicality?

And another thing, is it just a myth that the sea always gives up the dead?

I am so burnt out on disasters I can't wrap my mind around so many people dying like this.

But here in Cincy today the winds were only 60 or less mph for some hours and there was no water at all.

If anyone knows more please share -especially about Biloxi if they have facts.

It is so sad.

Copied from another board.
[link to www.khou.com]

Granted, it's all second hand information but we have heard from a local fireman, a local policeman, and a resident still on the island (that identified 2 dead themselves) that the death toll is extremely high... and that they are just sitting on it until the hysteria dies down.

The first account comes from a fireman on the island that said he had never seen so many dead bodies before.

The second from a friends boyfriend who happens to be a police officer, who has said they have gathered so many dead and are keeping it hush for now.

And the third from a resident on the island that discovered some dead in one of the local businesses on 23rd.

I don't wish to add to the hysteria, but I find it horrible that the news is being complicate in not reporting the death tolls to the public. It's criminal.
