Hurricane Force Winds Strike Louisville Kentucky 9-14-2008 ~ 1 to 3 pm edt

Hurricane Ike leaves its mark on the Nations 16th largest city

Kentucky and Southern Indiana took a direct hit from hurricane Ike clashing with a cold front ,It lasted about three hours with gust of up to 91 mph and sustained winds of 65 mph + for over 1 hour , The worse winds were felt starting at around 2:00 pm .Was just like a fairly strong tropical storm that came rolling through town .The hours of 1 to 3 were rocking Not a drop of rain only raging winds . Tightest pressure gradients I have seen over land in a long time ,Pressure was noted my location form 30. mb , and they went down below 26 and were still falling before we lost communication .I have rode several Tropical Cyclones when I lived in the South East .and this had the feel of a Fairly strong topical storm minus the rains . So it kind became and for a short time Ike became a hurricane again over land while on it path to the North .The CDO Remnants was well over one hundred miles away and Ike's ghost and fury was felt by many in Southern Indiana and Kentucky . Not sure about upstream , But we got our A$$ES Whooped big time in the Louisville area

237 thousand people + in Kentucky served by LG&E were with out power region total said to be over a half million without power .LG&E also said that people could expect to be out of power for perhaps weeks .Also in Louisville 133 roads roads were closed. 100 hundred schools are with out power and class has already been canceled for the start of the week .Western High School lost its gym roof , Over 3,100 power-lines are known to be down .LG&E also said that the number was 3X the amount of the famous 1974 tornado outbreak , thus the worst they ever seen . 911 and emergency operators got 2,200 calls alone from the hours 11am to 4 pm , An average days amount of calls to 911 is 1,200 for the entire day . There was 36 ambulances active and all first responders are called to duty . There was 400 fire runs with 25 structure fires with 8 significant fires during the storm

Ryder Cup golf site suffered extreme damage

Most of my surrounding neighborhoods are without power , Some of the people around me took it pretty hard . We had a few big branches down .Other had them on their roofs and trees were on power-lines all over the place a real mess

My Net just came back up online , I'm one of the lucky few , Most everyone around me have no phone nor internet nor cable and no power to top it off, Hundreds of thousands ,, We took it pretty hard , They are calling it the worse to hit here in over 40 years , I have to agree ~ Very bad up here

1 killed, at least 20 injured and more than 300,000 without power after Wind Storm 2008

Hurricane Ike's remnants packed an inland wallop that pounded Kentucky with fierce winds, leaving hundreds of thousands without power Monday in what Gov. Steve Beshear called the most massive power outage on record in the state. The storm closed schools, capsized boats and caused at least one death.

All three bridges connecting Ky and IN were closed at the same time. I lived in KY, and was stuck in Indiana the entire night. Lousiville/Clarksville bridge closed, Madison, IN bridge closed, and Markland damn closed. For nearly 12 hours! Rumors flew why all three bridges were closed at once. Not sure why they were, but they are open now, I believe.

Residential power line & debris clean up & directing traffic ~ 100 National guardsman have been called to report to active duty in Louisville , They will also activate MP''s to assist police and supply MRE to people as we go .Water supply is safe

215,000 LG&E & 26,000 Kentucky Utilites customers remain without power at this hour .This is only the Louisville area , They are expecting the outage to last around 14 days .

Schools have been closed Monday , Tuesday and thoughts already that they will be closed for the better part of this week .
Power has been restored to about 50 of the schools ,

Most stores are closed and there is no power so all frozen food is now waste , Many residents caught off guard and without supplies .

I hope everybody's okay! hf

Ike came through here last night (southwestern Ontario). Nothing as bad as what you guys are going through, though. hugs

Lots of rain and some winds, but no damage as far as I know. We were fortunate; it was just a medium sized, ordinary storm...

Governor Beshear and Attorney General Conway take action to protect Kentucky consumers from price gouging

In response to the dramatic spike in gas prices overnight, Gov. Steve Beshear today signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency to prevent price gouging in the commonwealth.

Under this order, the governor can apply Chapter 367 of the Kentucky Revised Statutes to implement provisions of the law aimed at protecting the citizens of Kentucky from predatory pricing by unscrupulous providers, including but not limited to gasoline and building supplies.

“I am outraged by the voracious practices of price gouging we are seeing,” said Gov, Beshear. “Today, I have taken an extraordinary step to protect the consumers of the commonwealth from these predators.”

The emergency declaration, issued before Hurricane Ike hits the coast, triggers several consumer protection measures. Among them, it empowers the Attorney General to investigate and prosecute, where appropriate, those who sell gasoline, building supplies and other goods for predatory pricing in a time of disaster.

Gov. Beshear and Attorney General Jack Conway have partnered to make aggressive consumer protection a priority, launching an investigation earlier this summer into high gas prices in Louisville.

“Today, I formally requested that Gov. Beshear implement the price gouging protections of Kentucky’s Consumer Protection Act as they apply to gasoline and other goods and services. We have received an overwhelming influx of reports from across Kentucky regarding gasoline price spikes and even rationing. I felt it was important to get the price gouging protections in place as soon as possible to protect the commonwealth’s consumers and businesses,” General Conway said.

Due to the overwhelming call volume they are experiencing, the Attorney General’s Office encourages anyone with specific information regarding the activities of particular gasoline stations or other retail outlets to contact them at [email protected].

Once in a lifetime event

This setup so rare ,This was a humbling Very unique experience ~ I Will Never will see another quite like it

Some reports of bugalaries but the police have not admitted to any looting at this time .Scanner is busy
Military Police will bring order to whatever chaos manages to breakout. Police are having some calls out to gas stations as tempers rage , Constant lines at the stations that do have gas . Several tanker per day output at those that can remain open . There are runs on the Grocery Stores that are open ~ Louisville goes dark for the night .And many others in the region too

Also from the Louisville, Ky area. Live in a 9 story apartment complex. Of course the building withstood the high gusty wind but you can feel the building shaking as the wind was blowing against the building a little scary when that is happening. Still have power. But when I went to work there was no power to the building I work at so I went back home and a lot of damage to my surrounding area such as Trees limbs on the ground and some damaged building near my work area which seemed to by lying on some Electrical Wires. Most of the traffic lights were either out or blinking.
