A report from someone I know in Galveston. MASS DEATHS.
I emailed a friend today that I know in Galveston:

"There are a lot of people on the internet talking about a media blackout, and how they aren't really reporting whats going on down there, and thinking they are hiding possibly thousands of deaths of people who did not flee. Is there any truth to that that you know of?"

He responded:

"Yes I am only able to get local news because cable is out still, and I believe that is true. Bolivar/Gilchrist/High Island people are expected to be in masses. They are up in Chambers County which is north of Galveston Bay with dogs thinking some washed up there. There will be countless numbers they are expecting washed out to sea, however, we think those would have washed up by now. I won’t be getting in the water anytime soon nor will I take the boat out. I was raised around the funeral business and don’t want to see that stuff right now! We haven’t had any calls resulting from drowning yet but we are expecting them. A friend is one of the first responders taking Federal Officials to the Bolivar area and he said the news doesn’t do justice…it’s a mess!"

I had emailed him right after it happened and in his response then he said:

“All the homes pretty much have damage but we are lucky … we have a home! I am in a damp mood right now because we went out to the beach area of Texas City and it’s gone … GONE! Drove down to one of two homes that are located out there and gone! The husband and wife were rummaging through the debris trying to find belongings.

“They didn’t take pictures and cherished items because the home has been through several hurricanes and she thought it would be spared once more. We don’t know them but I had to get out and help them find things. Of course it is all ruined and wet but found a few pictures.

“Sad … the lady had such a devastating reaction that I tried not to cry helping her. It’s crazy … places I go to as a kid growing up in the Galveston area are now in memory. Loss of life to people in my community is going to be masses … I am getting reports from friends that are reporters in the field. War zone it is! Please think of those that have lost their homes! I am fortunate and blessed and that’s all I can say! Thank you for your concern!”

Thread: Galveston's Mayor ORDERED all city employees NOT to TALK to news reporters! MEDIA BLACKOUT! What are they hiding???
Posted: Mon Sep 15, 2008 5:50 pm Post subject: national spotlight

---------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------

My friend got off the island with pictures today and they are sick. Bodies everywhere! The numbers on the island are 4000+. Where is the national media....where is the outcry. By this time in Katrina there were telethons...and here nothing. The pictures have been sent to Nytimes, cnn, etc and nobody has posted about them. Mark my words tomorrow there will be headlines, and if not in the papers than in the blogs because this is a higher death count than Katrina and 9/11 combined. This is sick...and it is true. On the island they are telling them not to talk so as to give them time to notfy the families..but a national spotlight is needed. This is bigger then the DOWJones and wall street. This is huge.

This was posted on the KHOU forum.

"Granted, it's all second hand information but we have heard from a local fireman, a local policeman, and a resident still on the island (that identified 2 dead themselves) that the death toll is extremely high... and that they are just sitting on it until the hysteria dies down.

The first account comes from a fireman on the island that said he had never seen so many dead bodies before.

The second from a friends boyfriend who happens to be a police officer, who has said they have gathered so many dead and are keeping it hush for now.

And the third from a resident on the island that discovered some dead in one of the local businesses on 23rd.

I don't wish to add to the hysteria, but I find it horrible that the news is being complicate in not reporting the death tolls to the public. It's criminal."

the following from the Tyler TX Paper.

File photos Mark Collette and Rhiannon Meyers
The following is a first-hand account of the destruction of Galveston Island by Hurricane Ike by Mark Collette, former Tyler Paper reporter, who lives there with his wife, Rhiannon Meyers, also a former Tyler Paper reporter and now a reporter for the Galveston County Daily News.
Collette sent an e-mail, from which this information was included,
Authorities are still in search-and-rescue mode. About 24,000 people didn’t heed evacuation orders. Rescuers are leaving the dead in houses and moving on to look for the living.

Unlike in New Orleans after Katrina, they are not spray painting a giant "X" on a building when they find bodies. Instead, they are putting discrete stickers on the buildings. On the one hand, government officials seem to be trying to keep the media from portraying the true extent of the disaster, but on the other hand officers are tipping off reporters about deaths and rescues.

Re: A report from someone I know in Galveston. MASS DEATHS.
I wanted to do this for the Iraq war casualties but didn't. Someone should still do this for the Iraq war victims though.....Someone needs to start a website called IKECOUNT.com or something. Family and friends can go on and register the names, ages, locations, etc. of missing or deceased victims of the storm.

This would yield a MUCH more accurate account.

Did the person who posted the Hurricane Ike thread ever check back in afterwards? He was holed up and going to stick it out on High Island. Said it was too late to leave and the roads too congested. I hope he/she/they made it.

Re: A report from someone I know in Galveston. MASS DEATHS.
What do you consider "mass" deaths? 20, 50, 100? There's no media blackout here. They are allowing people to return to the island to survey their property or whats left of it.

I live in Houston...west side. We lost power/cable for one hour so we watched the news quite a bit over the course of several days.

If you lived on Bolivar Peninsula...more than likely, you aren't alive if you didn't flee. Only one man was found on Bolivar...but then again, only one house was standing.

The Galveston mayor isn't to blame for people not leaving. The storm was squirrelly from the get go jogging back and forth. Most Cat 2 storms don't have that kind of surge. It was an anomoly.

Now, I do predict she will resign in the next month or so. She is a tough old bird, but she was cracking during news conferences about the devastation. Its one thing to be mayor of a tourist attraction, its another to deal with the destruction they are dealing with.

But back to the original post...not mass deaths. They found bodies...but my guess is probably a 100 to 200 total...many they'll never find because of the surge and receding tide.

White folks don't have a Jesse Jackson to entertain the masses on news television to whine about how 'merica hates black people when a disaster occurs. White people dying just isn't interesting news I guess.

I think you mean the man who posted from Bolivar Penninsula. A week later we heard that he and his wife were rescued. They survived the night by getting into their ceiling. There is footage of an interivew with his wife on one of the Ike threads. I will try to find it for you. I had been worried about him as well, and was glad to finally learn that he was ok.

Evacuation

They announce on tv that my neighborhood is under a mandatory evacuation order.
I don't watch tv.

A phone call.
County automated call to all numbers warning us to evacuate.
My land line is only for dial-up.

Two days later my picture is in the local paper waving from my upstairs front porch, house surrounded by water.

Nobody had told me to evacuate.

I read newspapers on the internet. Some days up to 17 internet editions of newspapers.
None of them listed a mandatory evacuation.

For those who get the order.
Do they have a car that will take them several hundred miles?
Do they have money to pick up and go?

At least New Orleans provides busses for those without personal resources.

During hurricane season, you may want to consider watching the weather channel everyday - or maybe going online...keeping track of the storms.

Sorry you got stuck there - but there WERE provisions for people to get out. Free buses going to free shelters with free food and free water.

Hello, We and IN Galveston now. Our relatives lost their home and so did we. The LAURA RECOVERY CENTER has taken a few hundred "missing persons" info. There are NOT mass deaths in Galveston. Trust me! Sadly, there are lots of dead animals. A scared, hungry dog attacked me. The cops shot it. I'll have nightmares about that for a long time! While some people are unaccounted for on Bolivar, Gilcrest, High Island, Crystal Beach etc. there are not mountains of bodies. We'll keep in touch when we can get to a computer. There is still little electricity here on the island. Love you guys and miss ya!!
