I think the banking problems, while serious, are not as important as what I see is the imminent drastic reduction in the availablilty of petroleum. Without a good supply of oil, we will have difficulty getting electricity to keep our cities lit and the water flowing. Without oil, we will be having problems getting food to the grocery stores. I think we will have a year to eighteen months to prepare for a future without a ready supply of oil. as far as the economic mess, there is a possibility of a depression, but if your job is a critical one, you should make it theough the next year okay.

 Quoting: Duncan Kunz

I don't see that happening.

The supply is pretty secure, 70% to 80%. We get 40 percent from our own sources in the US. Another good part of it comes from Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela.

Venezuela could be questionable but their oil is not refinable by many other places than the US.

The other big player is Saudi Arabia. I don't think there is a problem ther unless terrorists do something to harm that infrastructure.

There should be a lot of new wells in the US that should be coming online in the next year and a half.

Also if things got really tight there is always the option of not selling Alasken oil to the Japanese.

If we absolutely had to we could work a way to do with 20% to 30% less.

If that situation arose EVERYONE needs to keep a cool head and not panic.

Eveything will work out.

You're in Arizona so you may already know that many utilities could actually power the grid for over a hundred years on coal if they wanted too. I'm not sure if this is the case in other parts of the country. But unfortunately there is no other alternative for food production, etc. So basically we could all watch TV and starve. LOL.

Duncan:
Heading to a third world economy, is not the end of the world. Yeah, it is rough, but other countries have survived it, and USA can survive it, too.

Some persons paint the picture, like some scene taken from Mad Max. It is not quite that dramatic.

Getting ready for tough times is always wise. Good idea to have simplify expenses and to find ways to provide our needs.

But, as important as the material preparations, is the ATTITUDE. That's what worries me, even more than the economy, about the american society.

A society that is not mentally prepared for a depression (of any kind) and has guns, is a very, very, dangerous society. Panic and the shock to live without the comfort that they were used to, may create much more problems, than the depression itself.

I would recommend everybody, to mentally prepare for this very possible tough times. It is not just about stocking piles of food in your pantry and piles of guns in your bunkers. It is also abou stocking tons of common sense and flexibility in your mind and tons of tolerance in your heart.

USA has an individualistic society. That is going to make it hard to adapt to possible adjustments like:

1. Parents living with their sons/daughters in a limited space and with a limited budget. Third world countries, tend to be "family oriented", not just because of social/moral reasons. The economical issue plays an important part and it takes a lot of tolerance, patience, consideration, respect, etc., to make it work. Everybody needs to learn to be considerate and supportive. The word "mine" is not as used as the word "our".

2. Community and unity is a "must" in a third world economy, exactly for what you said: Money is restricted. To be ready to trade services (example: One week the neighbor takes the kids to school, one neighbor fixes your roof, you fix his car, etc).

In order to be able to work as a community, all that bullshit of suing for stupidities or calling the cops because you can't tell your neighbor to turn his music down, has to stop. Communication and negotiation without 'daddy authority" needs to be learnt by americans again.

Kids need to learn to respect and obey their parents again, and for that, parents need to spend more time teaching them discipline and manners. Stop treating your kids like mini gods, and then complaining when they reach adolescence and they really believe they are gods and deserve everything without giving anything in return.

I keep reading threads here about "running to the hills" and "surviving" with this individualist mentality. That won't work. That separation will only get people isolated, irritable and frustrated...and armed. Not a good combination.

In a third world economy, the individualistic mentality is out of context. You need to learn to create at least mentally, a social/family/group mentality to make it work or all those 'survivors' in their bunkers, will end up killing each other, for fear of being "invaded" or "robbed".

Good luck to all of you.

OMFG, now I know we are so DOOMED!

Duncan, if you haven't done so yet, order your heirloom seeds. Might I suggest winter squashes and pumpkins, which will keep all winter if stored properly, and carrots, that will (at least in our area) overwinter quite well.

I keep my seeds vacuum packed to make them last longer, too.

Re: Is the Debunker King crazy -- or what??!!??
Good Morning,

Angst and hand-wringing regarding the fate of the financial system and that of key economies flared up once again overnight as yet another series of acrimonious deliberations took place on Capitol Hill and soothing speeches were being delivered by various US officials. Alas, very little in the way of concrete measures was offered, and thus the markets resumed their own pattern of hand-wringing, with gold aiming back towards $890 and the dollar slipping towards the 76.50 marker on the index.

Last night's address by President Bush got a chilly reception in Europe following his remarks that the current crisis has at least some of its roots in the massive influx of foreign investment that the US was enjoying for many years. German officials have criticized their US counterparts as slow to react to the mounting crisis and warned that America's financial superpower status will erode and be replaced by a 'multi-polar' world financial system. In so many words, the Germans feel that the dollar will eventually become just another currency and end its hegemony by sharing the global leadership table with several other currencies. In retrospect, the speech that was intended to instill confidence on Main Street looks like it may have raised the level of public alarm from yellow to orange.

Although the $700 billion rescue package inched closer to becoming reality, much bickering and finger-pointing was still the feature du jour on the Hill and on the campaign trail yesterday. While US senators were grilling Messrs. Bernanke and Paulson on the finer details of the "P" Plan, candidates McCain and Obama took of in completely opposite directions as regards the debate that is supposed to take place on Friday night, and could only agree on the importance of recognizing the magnitude of the crisis and having someone take some measures to deal with it. The financial crisis could not come at a worse time for Mr. McCain as his party is seen as one of the tributaries to the river of financial pain that threatens to spill onto that same Main Street, after having inundated Wall Street and leaving it covered in thick mud.

Most markets started the day off on an indecisive or slightly weak tone, as investors remained unwilling to do that which they normally do, until something comes down from Washington in the way of a decision on the rescue plan. The dollar tilted a bit lower, losing .30 at 76.52 on the index and at $1.47 against the euro, while crude oil dipped to just under $104 per barrel on demand apprehensions. Gold made very little progress, advancing a very tentative $2.50 to $884.40, while silver managed a 25 cent gain to $13.46 an ounce. Platinum and palladium were largely unchanged. Dollar-negative news such as slumping durable goods orders and rising jobless claims failed to do much harm to the greenback, while stock-negative news such as GE's earnings warning and an unemployment figure that is just 7,000 shy of half a million failed to overcome the bailout plan-related optimism in stock futures. The feeling that the 'plan' needs to be approved in whatever form, and that it must not go awry is conspicuous. The certainty however, is not.

In other news, the CFTC is investigating the allegations of manipulation in the silver market, following complaints from 'investors' that a small number of banks were showing some 'unduly large' short positions in the metal - a fact that appears to bother those who have not been able to realize their silver-lined dreams. For a quick snapshot of the situation that led to the regulatory investigation, please refer to the CPM Group analysis on the issue, Video: WHAT Silver Price Conspiracy? An Educated Explanation. The clip might also come in handy when the CFTC comes up empty-handed once again, and silver prices are seen to gyrate based on actual market factors such as supply, demand, investor interest, etc.

Duncan loses 50-60% of his 401K that he diligently saved over the last 40 years, his buddy McCain ships his Boeing job over to France, and he gets kicked off DoD's payroll as a chemtrail debunker.

Sounds like tough times Duncan. I wish you the best even though you've threatened me and have been a complete jerk many times over the past year to me.

The most ironic part of all is:

While you're trying to grow some food in the desert on dry, cracked dirt, you're going to look up to the sky at those beautiful chemtrails being laid over head and drop to your knees wishing and praying they'd turn off the chems and spray water on your little, cutesy garden instead.

OH THE IRONY OF BEING AN ASSHOLE YOUR WHOLE LIFE.

Give me a break.

Of course maybe I got what Duncan is saying wrong.

I don't think there will be a problem with the supply of oil for the US.

The supply for the rest of the world is another matter.

And we are all intertwined.

But whatever happens keep your head and don't panic.

And don't do stuff that makes other people panic.

We are all in the same boat.

Problem is that from what I see here at GLP, most GLPers want panic and doom and the system to crash.

Be careful what you wish for.
