Need advice on purchasing a handgun
Ok, never owned a firearm in my life. But now beginning to see the logic in owning one. Would like to get advice from members here on the purchase of a handgun and also the purchase process. Nothing fancy, just something reliable to protect me and my family when things go south. Not interested in rifles or shotguns. Prefer something with easy portability. Reliable. And preferably with a good reputation.

Can we get a nice thread going here? I can think of several members here who are knowledgeable on this subject, so I hope at least Omega and ET chime in here.

I'm interested in this.

the cheaper the better, but not so cheap that the gun sucks.

something as cheap as i can spend...with reliability and cheap enough ammo.

my hubby says...glock or makarov ....depends on how much you want to pay...and the size of your hands...go check out what feels good in your hand...and get some target time in if you can.not much good if you can't hit what you are aimin' at or so unfamiliar you fumble....

And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all....

gun like procurement?

a friend of mine who is a gunsmith is happy with these for the money, i owned the carbine and it was ok, but i have shot lots and lots of guns, it is what i love to do, but anywho, check this out:

[link to www.hi-pointfirearms.com]

nice thing is you can have a pistol and carbine that uses the same ammo and magazines

Yes, this would be purchased by me and for personal use. I guess of course I can research online, but I was hoping for personal experience from other members who are familiar with gun ownership. I am totally unfamiliar with the entire process including how to purchase.

I'll check out that link. Thanks!

Read up on what's right for you. Buy some gun mags, if you have I-Tunes there's a great podcast or two on handguns.

Taurus all the way, myself. Browning is good too.

Re: Need advice on purchasing a handgun
although i gave you a link for semi automatic handguns, i feel better saying you should probably purchase a revolver based on your experience, caliber would be .357 magnum , which will also shoot the .38 special which is a little more mild

ruger, smith and wesson are the companies i am familiar with, i have always been happy with every ruger product i have ever bought, it is a great value for the money

DON'T get beginner's into semi auto weapons without the training and money to procure a weapon that won't get you killed in a real gunfight, Malu I am surprised at you man.

simply go down to a gun store, tell them straight up you are not there to buy, you want to know how the process works, ask if you are allowed to shoot some, you want instruction, this is a must, study online about makes, calibers, and prices, check ammo prices also
get an idea of the total price, paperwork involved, warranty, if they try to talk you into buying a big cannon or something shiny and expensive, walk away, really think about why you are doing this, where you will keep it, do you have children/spouse to think about
you have to shoot it, that is an absolute must

be careful though, it is as addicting as this forum ;)

Re: Need advice on purchasing a handgun
Gun purchase regulations vary from state to state, so it's hard to be specific, not knowing where you are at.

In most states, purchasing a handgun is not a big deal at all, as long as you don't have any violent or felony convictions.

You will be required to fill out a questionaire for the background check which basically asks if you are a citizen, have any felony or domestic violence charges, drug or alcohol abuse, etc. The seller then phones that in, which takes about 5 minutes, and you are approved provided yur record is clean. Then local waiting periods apply, 3-10 days in most states.

I also suggest a .357 revolver with about a 4" barrel for most new shooters. Very simple, rugged, and one of the most versatile handguns made. You shoud be able to find a Taurus, Ruger, or Smith & Wesson for under $400. Colts are very nice, but more expensive.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 415872

Bleh....I hate glocks.

OP if you are serious get a simple revolver, .357 is a good choice. Go to a range and shoot as much as you can with it, try some others after you get used that, most ranges rent them. After you learn some more about firearms? then you can make the choice on a more complicated firearm whick might have better benefits for you, but take more experience to use, or you might just find that a .357 revolver is all you will ever need, for many that is more than enough.

Colt
Smith & Wesson
Ruger
all make great revolvers, choice depends on what you want to or can spend. If you want to buy used, make sure you take someone who knows what to look for. Any revolver you buy should have what is called a called a "Transfer bar" safety, any new revolver will, some older ones won't, but you should have that.

I agree... The revolver that fits your hand best. Trust me, any six rounds of magnums will kill just about anything god created.

Revolvers are deliberate and easy to learn with. You aren't going to accidentally chamber a round and shoot yourself...

I'd just look at and hold some different ones to see what you like best.

Glock 19. If there's somewhere near you that you could test fire some guns, that's what i recommend. Don't listen to this revolver over semi BS talk. I bought a glock 23 for my first handgun and had no problems learning to fire it effectively. I recommend the 19 because 9mm ammunition is cheaper, can be fired more accurately particularly by someone with less experience, and has a higher round capacity. Again as stated above, glocks are reliable; true tried and tested.

Pistol whipping with a plasic gun is a problem, lol.
That XD is not a gun that I carry daily. I use mr. 1911 for that. All steel! But, that XD I can leave in my truck console for a month, and not worry about it rusting, plus it holds 14 rounds of .45 instead of 8 or 9.

Glocks are very simple and reliable, just not very safe for a beginner, IMO. No manual safeties, just load a magazine, close the slide, and pull the trigger. The only thing that stops it from going boom is keeping your finger or anything else off the trigger.
