I've witnessed many minor layoffs of Coleman during the 30 years my buddy has worked there [he's a LeadMan on their injection-molding line - he cranks out those nifty little jugs and coolers you see everywhere by the thousands - I've even got some very rare weird color combinations from where he'd purge one dye to another and crank out a few limited-editions for friends] and with VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS Coleman has ALWAYS kept their layoffs quiet and out of local media. This has been a long-term corporate policy instituted by the Coleman family itself. So, BITE ME. And: another poster was correct.. up until just a few years ago, Coleman WAS one of the few remaining family-owned worldclass manufacturers in the United States. First they sold out to Sunbeam [who nearly ruined their reputation] and now they are owned [I think] by an Australian conglomerate. GOT YOUR TENTS, FOLKS? |

Didn't the same company buy them that bought Igloo and Rubbermaid? Igloo and rubbermaid got bought out by some company that ruined them and then sold off their assets. The theory goes that this is a sinister attempt to take out the last dying embers of America's manufacturing base. They cut the companies down to prove manufacturing is not feasible in the US. |

(OP) User ID: 514608 United States 10/01/2008 01:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Oddly enough: we also had a Rubbermaid plant just south of Wichita that closed a few years ago. You could buy those little BlueIce freezer pouches for 20 cents in stores here in town shortly thereafter. MALU: I just bet the resin costs DID have something to do with this shutdown, but Coleman has also been seriously mismanaged for several years now, too. BTW: I believe the tents, and fabric goods ARE made in China... the only things still popped out here in Wichita are the jugs and stoves and lantern assemblies and the propane bottles they use. Coleman has a separate local filling facility for the propane tanks. Might be a good time for me to visit the Coleman Outlet store and see what I can pick upon the cheap!!! It's right across from their old, original plant near downtown that had been their HQ for about 75 years; then, when they vacated, guess what? Wichita city inspectors found that the groundwater around the old plant had been seriously contaminated over the years and Coleman had to pay a whopping fine and cover the cleanup costs -millions of dollars worth. And, that beautiful brick turn-of-the-century building still sits there, just a shell and a home for pidgeons. Pretty sad, actually. |

MD User ID: 353953 United States 10/01/2008 02:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | They make useful prep items...not enough people preparing... Quoting: dookie stain 317540Sadly, not enough people even know how to use the majority of their items other than coolers and the like. Considering the reports that less people are hunting and fishing, I am sure that number also includes outdoor types who camp. I doubt many people today could set up an older pup-tent without the fancy "pop" up systems they have now. I doubt many people even know how to build a basic lean-to for shelter with a tarp let alone natural materials. I buy outdoor gear every time I get the chance to do so and store it away for future needs. Usually can get this stuff on sale past few years as no one is buying it and they need to clear out their stock for the junk that is selling like cell phones. Mike |

Mike Yep...I still remember setting up the canvas shelter halves in the army...they had wooden tent poles...I got quite a collection of outdoors gear....used to work as a buyer for a major hiking/camping/climbing shop...top of the line stuff...Northface, moss tents, Marmot jackets,etc....Lot of it was promo stuff I get for free or cheap from company reps...Some odd ball stuff too...I got an external frame "trailwise" pack as used by Colin Fletcher in "the complete walker" book...took a while to hunt down that discontinued pack...I also got a prototype Northface Camo goretex bivy bag....gotta have gear... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 606407 United States 02/02/2009 06:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | WICHITA KS Quoting: gsbltdI just got this from a good friend who has worked for the Wichita KS-based COLEMAN COMPANY for over 30 years: that they have initiated the most massive layoff in their corporate history which spans nearly a century. The camping equipment giant - a long-time leader in the outdoor industry [and world's largest camping-gear manufacturer]- normally has 650-700 employees on their many production lines churning out their huge array of tents, lanterns, stoves and sleeping bags... virtually anything related to leisure activities; effective today, they have reduced their workforce to a mere 7-10 people in their main manufacturing plant... and, those people are there soley to maintain the equipment in working order if/when they ask their labor force to return. This skeleton crew are checking hydraulic fluid, starting up idle equipment and filling what few orders are still trickling into their shipping department. But, they are basically keeping everything neat and tidy while the huge building sits idle. A skeleton crew are still on the job in the corporate office wing handling accounts receivable/payable and fielding questions from nervous vendors. This layoff was presented to even long-term employees as "indefinite." It should also be noted that NOT ONE WORD of this layoff has yet to be reported in the Wichita KS media - a pattern of public silence that Coleman has traditionally followed in times of previous short-term layoffs; however, those layoffs affected only small segments of the production line and not the entire manufacturing base as this one has done... yet, still they remain quiet. |
