My mom works at a hospital, she was required to get a flu vaccine like a week ago.

ok thats fair enough, but i just would like to ask WHY are they making such a big ding dong about a virus that has killed less than 400 world wide, and saying its going to be the next big pandemic? yes, to whip up fear, yes to MAKE you have the vaccine (problem, solution etc) but why do they want you to have this particular vaccine so much when there really isnt that much risk from it? it makes no sense... same with the cervical cancer vaccine.

The H5N1 (and others, H1N1, etc.) isolates are available in several databases. Some are private, some are open to public access.

The genetic information is only for naturally circulating viruses isolated in the United States. It includes data from the annual U.S. flu season, animal flu viruses that infect humans, and new strains that may emerge in this country, such as the H5N1 bird flu.

The organizations expect to bank genetic information on several hundred flu viruses each year, CDC officials said,

Scientists need easy access to information about evolving viruses for their work on vaccines and treatments, said Rosemary Humes, the association's director of infectious diseases.

"It really is important that researchers have access to information about influenza viruses as they change each year," she said.

The action follows instances in which some Asian countries failed to share bird flu information with the CDC and the World Health Organization. In Indonesia, officials for months withheld the blueprints of H5N1 viruses isolated from people and poultry. The country this month changed its position and sent isolates abroad.

After the Indonesian government agreed to share the information, CDC officials placed total genome sequences for about 40 of the H5N1 viruses into GenBank.

"We hope these initiatives will set the stage for other countries to adopt similar approaches to the release of influenza virus sequence data that they manage," said Dr. Nancy Cox, director of the CDC's Influenza Division, in a prepared statement.

Some developing countries are reluctant to share bird flu data because they believe pharmaceutical companies will use it to create vaccines they won't be able to afford, said Edward Hammond, director of the Sunshine Project of Austin, Texas.

"The way that the CDC should set an example is to attack the problem of vaccine costs rather than simply insist that openness is the solution. Openness is only part of the solution," he said.

Hammond advocates more control of biological weapons and biotechnology, and he voiced concerned when CDC officials last year recreated the 1918 pandemic flu virus and decided to place the gene-sequencing information in GenBank.

He is not as worried about the public availability of genetic information on naturally circulating viruses, he said. "This is not really a bioweapons issue," Hammond said.

Flu viruses, including bird flu are composed of RNA, not DNA.

Influenza A Virus Replication

Process by which a virus enters a host cell and infects it by reproducing its own genetic material and assembling into virus particles.

The influenza virus is a class of viruses containing RNA as its hereditary material.
It replicates by entering a host cell and using this cell's resources to produce hundreds of copies of the viral RNA.

The virus attaches to the outside of the host cell and its RNA enters into the cell. The viral genes are transcribed and translated by the cell's enzymes and ribosomes. In this way, the virus takes over the cell's productivity. Now, instead of producing only new cellular material, the cell produces hundreds of new virus particles. The new virus particles are eventually released from the cell and drift off, and some may land on a host cell of their own to pirate.

I didn't say that there isn't something they call 'isolated H5N1 virus'. Of course they say they've isolated "it". Duh.

The difference between "viral isolation" now, as opposed to a few decades ago is night and day.

The difference between then and now is ALSO how they can get away with fantastic claims of "mutations". Those mutations are nothing more than sloppy science at work.

Regarding the above three statements...

Number one: no need to explain further.

Number two: Yes, it's absolutely relevant as viral isolation set forth by the Pasteur Institute in the early 70's was a laborious and rigorous process. But ever since "HIV" entered the picture, INFERENCE is good enough for "isolation", and to hell with the Pasteur Instititute as there's money to be made from phoney viral scares.

Number three: We'll have to agree to disagree.

For flu, you might want to look into Elderberry extract (a natural anti-viral used for hundreds of years), and a product called Sambucol.
