I was in AF Communications Command but I had to deal with the SAC folks frequently (we had a secure window box between our comm center and the SAC command post) and they were always very professional and no nonsense. Whoever it is I hope they are up to task of eventually dealing with Russia's offense. |

SAC was ready to go to complete war under any conditions. Merging SAC with any other part of the military (including the Air Force) was not even considered. Any reorganization of this unit only serves to water it down. Curtis LeMay is for sure spinning in his grave right now as they dismantle the most pure and complete fighting unit the US has ever seen. SAC was meant for a total and complete war. |

This was a base that was full of B-52 during the Vietnam war. When i first arrived at AFB, Guam this unit along with all the other B-52 units serving in the Vietnam war were in fact taking hits and suffering losses in their bombing campaigns. By changing tactics the losses were reversed and returned to almost zero. My most important duty station was in Cheyenne, Wyoming with the Minute Man III ICBM. Things were so tight here that even during practice or a fake radar interpretations all 200 ICBM would be cocked and loaded and ready to fire. Any misinterpretation of information would and could be blamed on anybody else. Any mistakes world wide did not matter this unit meant business. And their most important message was. you better not be fucking with us. |

Those guys in the silos would have done their job. I started a board gaming club at LRAFB and most of the members where Titan II officers who had lots of time to play down in the silos. I got to know some of them very well, and I believe they had the psych makeup to really turn the keys. Kind of scary, but that was the point. "Peace is Our Profession" were not just words.
