Poverty causes stroke-like symptoms in kids
[link to www.usatoday.com]

So tell me now that lifelong poverty is not induced through genuine physical handicap, or that it is the fault of the individual. Wake up to the realities of poverty now, or wake up to them standing on line at the soup kitchen.
When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.

Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

It's no surprise, and it's "out of the book".

The book in question is brave new world.

Read it, and behold "the plan" in all it's majesty.

I am sure that this has a lot to do with the affects on these children...

Re: Poverty causes stroke-like symptoms in kids
Unfortunately, this news isn't really news. Real learning differences between middle class and poor children regardless of race or ethnicity were shown by Child Development psychologists in the 60s. Head Start, one of the initiatives of LBJ's War on Poverty, was designed to gift poor kids with intensive early education to try to minimize the differences. Unfortunately, when subsequent administrations decided we couldn't have both war and education, the War on Poverty turned into War on the Poor and Head Start along with other child health initiatives was almost wiped out.

The differences discussed in the USA Today article are those that work together to create differences in academic IQ when tested. And a book from the 90s, "The Bell Curve" by Richard J. Herrnstein and Charles Murray, suggests that academic intelligence is partially hereditary and that children will tend to have an IQ midway between those of their parents. So, research suggests this:

* People tend to have children with those of similar IQ.

* People with lower IQs tend to have lower incomes than those of higher IQs.

* People with lower incomes (and presumably lower IQs) tend to have a higher birth rate right now.

* IQs of society as a whole are probably dropping.

So, yes, poor children do generally appear to think and behave differently. And, fortunately, environment can counteract the effects of genetics so poor kids (or rich kids) in an intensive, intellectually stimulating early childhood education program will have a good chance at fulfilling more of the intellectual potential given them through genetics.

That said, the last few administrations of both parties have worked hard to destroy the educational gains of the 60s and 70s -- Head Start, small-group teaching, teaching to children's individual learning styles, and more. As with most areas of society, if we gave intellectual advancement or even equalizing the priority of a moon launch, huge changes could be made. Fat Chance.

Brave New World is a great book and true in many ways. One point that Huxley missed though is that the subclasses develope abilites and gifts that the over class do not develop. I knew many dumbed down kids in school. Some of them became street wise and some became abnormally compassionate. Even with the deck obviously stacked against the lower classes many were able to move up. The dumbing down of the poor has been done since the cave man days. The Brave New World isn't brave or new it is just the world.

Thanks for the input, but access to good education is certainly not the only problem facing poverty-stricken children today. The link I added above outlines a dangerous agenda being perpetrated aginst us all, but is most clearly visible in poor families.

One must also consider these effects on children who were not necessarily born into poverty, but suddenly wound up there.

I was one of those children, though poverty struck a bit later, in my teens. I am of high intelligence, born to a good family, and yet i am homeless now for the second time in my life. The ecperiences have been traumatic in ways that even I cannot fully explain.

street wise a gift?

What the hell are you talking about?

As for people 'moving up' I'm not talking about $100,000 a year in salary, I'm not talking billions, but ammounts of wealth that cannot be properly measured, and to be included in multigenerational dynasties.

Look at the enviroment these kids are exposed to & the toxins they are exposed to. Hell they are now even admitting how toxic their enviroments are to where it has adversly changed them.

males that is, check here: [link to www.independent.co.uk]

Oh sure there have been lowerclasses that have been kept lower for ages, but this is new in the sense of obliterated history & efforts to make them into a different branch of human.

Re: Poverty causes stroke-like symptoms in kids
"The study adds to a growing body of evidence that shows how poverty afflicts children's brains. Researchers have long pointed to the ravages of malnutrition, stress, illiteracy and toxic environments in low-income children's lives. Research has shown that the neural systems of poor children develop differently from those of middle-class children, affecting language development and "executive function," or the ability to plan, remember details and pay attention in school."

What are the toxic environments? Oh yeah! Some of these children are born with fetal alcohol syndrome, drug addictions, and malnutrition from the mother abusing chemicals during pregnancy. Of course neural systems develop differently in these children.

This is an insidious problem, but very difficult to address because of cries of racism.

Poverty in and of itself does not CAUSE low intelligence. There are many factors at work here.

Re: Poverty causes stroke-like symptoms in kids
If you read the study you will see that NONE of the children had serious precursors to brain damage, like fetal alcohol syndrome or prenatal damage of any sort.

It was a screening criteria for both the wealthy and poor alike.

The key really seems to be stimulation and the level of input in the early years.

Rich kids are just given WAY more stimulation with greater variety.

Poor kids are more likely to lack in all areas of stimulation.

It's not hard to see.

It's also easy to fix...

Now, do we, as a society, care to bother?

I am trying to say that the world is not never will be totally controlled by men pretending to be God. The dumbed down kids I knew were not submissive as the lower classes in Brave New World.

I doubt the extra money does anything fo the super elite. So why should I be jealous of them?

I believe you. It is incredibly evil and it has been done before. The Irish potatoe famine was an artificial famine created by the elites to kill the Irish. When the south was invaded during the civil war the crops were burned to deliberately kill the Southerners. Poisoning the lower has also been done before. Poisoning the masses is a calling card of the Babylonion elite. They always end up poisoning themselves worst of all.

We are on the same side believe it or not. You must remember that the poor have something bigger on their side than money.

Of course the article did not say they had serious precursors to brain damage. The liberals will never say that. However it only takes a small amount of reasoning to understand that when these brain damaged children grow up (whether it is caused by toxic environments, low stimulation, etc..) and have more children, their children are predisposed to inheriting a gene that renders them incapable of attaining higher intellectual capacity.

Yes a lot of these problems are cultural, but it is not politically correct to state this. Whether it be from the drug culture of inner city youths having children or backwoods whites which intermarry. Mention this and you are immediately chastised for being racist and arrogant.

We need to focus more on prenatal care and early parenting skills. Also birth control is a huge issue that needs to be addressed. It is not the fault of the children born of these circumstances, however they perpetuate the cycle.

It is not that easy to fix, as you say.

Thanks for being so open, Jackinthebox...

With high intelligence and presumably a middle-class upbringing, it makes me sad that you find yourself homeless again. I can only hope that you are receiving therapy of some kind to help you deal with this and get back on your feet. My first husband had an extremely abusive father and even with a college degree and high IQ has been in dire financial straits most of his life from psychological issues that he never dealt with. Hope you have the courage to consider improving your situation through therapy. Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) can be very effective and usually have sliding fee scales.

There is no shame in sharing the truth. Thanks for reading.

Sadly, there is no money whatsoever for myself, or the many other just like me, to get any sort of counseling. Another paradox of poverty.

I am now being sued by a clinic for an overdue bill of hundreds of dollars, and I might wind up in jail because of it. As part of a plea-bargain arrangement, I agreed to alcohol counseling after a run-in with police, but had no money to pay the ten bucks per visit. I still have no money to make good on the bill. I literally don't even have any pocket change today, and very little food.

Here is the story of that incident, which played a major role in how I became homeless this time...
