Greatest Vintage Video Game of All Time?
Keeping in mind that "vintage" in video games can only be a few years back, let's set the cutoff at anything before 2000.

Today's video games fail in a lot of ways IMO. They are too much like movies, you see the movie once, and you don't want to see it again. Shell out 60 bucks and a week later you're bored.

To me, the mark of a great game isn't how great the graphics look, it's all about gameplay, re-play ability, and how good it does what it's trying to do.

With this in mind, my choice is a close decision between two classics, Re-Volt, an RC racing game from 1999 which was for PC and the N64, and suprisingly, Arnold Palmer's Golf from 1989 for Sega Genesis.

AP's golf is an incredibly good and simple golf game, simple but very clear graphics, fantastic game play and very soothing music which you have 4 choices to choose from. A very relaxing and fun game to play.

Re-Volt on the other hand is far from relaxing, we are talking fratic paced action. You aren't racing real cars, but RC models that have "re-volted" from the toy store.

Racing in such track settings as "Toys in the Hood", Museuem, Supermarket, Toy Store, Ghost Town, the graphics are fantastic and clear for 1999 standards or even today's. Re playability is also off the charts, after playing it for 6 months I still see action that makes me go "wow, that was cool!" Being able to alter yor favorite cars specs and abilities in the PC version make it even funner and I can't fail to mention the built in track editor which is a ton of fun, like a whole other game inside the game.

So I'll have to make a decision and say Re-Volt. I never liked racing games much until I played this one, and since I've tried supposedly better, newer racing games, but none can touch it.

My choice is Re-Volt RC Racing for PC and N64 for best vintage video game of all time (and maybe my best ever)

I also have to give honorable mention to the great sportstalk football games from 92-94 for Sega Genesis.

anyone remember those? still one of the best football games ever, and the announcer is great "It's a beautiful day"...
"oh my".....and the occasional inappropiate use of "he could go alll the waay" on what ends up being a 2 yard gain provides nice comic relief.

Anyway, I'm rambling, my choice is Re-Volt, I want to hear everyone else's choice for best vintage video game ever (pre 2000)

oh yea, one last thing, you can download Revolt for free, and a ton of other abandoned games at abandonia.com, it's worth it!

That was a good game while it lasted, very good, but I never cared enough to play it a 2nd time. Let me forget more about it and in a few years I may want to give it another go.

Have you tried the Resident Evil remake on for the GameCube? Much better than the original and one of the greats as well.

Daggerfall.

Epic. Huge.

For those that aren't familiar, it's the second in the Elder Scrolls series.

And let's not forget, Final Fantasy. The original.

Re: Greatest Vintage Video Game of All Time?
The second Castle Wolfenstein game, "Spear of Destiny" is one of my faves, but there was a similar game only set in the future which I loved even more, it was called "Blake Stone, Aliens of Gold." It had the Wolfenstein engine and concept, but with a lot of interesting twists and additions which Wolfenstein didn't have.

After that came Doom, which raised the bar even higher. Damn, that was one scary game!
