Good email I received on stroke identification
Email I received today that has some good health info. Hopefully you won't ever need it. I don't normally send things on unless I really think they are good.

STROKE:Remember the 1st Three Letters....S.T.R.

My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word.

I agree.

If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if! he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the! individual dual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number i! mmediat ely and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Note: ask them to raise both arms with their eyes closed. Works much better because otherwise they compensate for mild weakness.

Strokes happen so fast and without warning, I thought some would find it useful.

Re: Good email I received on stroke identification
I got this a while ago, and for about a month, every time I would get a migraine, I would be running around smiling, speaking tongue twisters, flapping my arms... Hell, that's what made other people think I had a stroke!

In all seriousness, my grandmother had a stroke, and the hospital failed to identify it. The simplest things can mean the WORLD in situations like that.
Well it seems so real I can see it
And it seems so real I can feel it
And it seems so real I can taste it
And it seems so real I can hear it
So why can't I touch it?
So why can't I touch it?

GRADIENT:
Good post!

It's good information. We printed off a copy last year and have it taped on the kitchen cabinet next to my father-in-law's list of medications.
"Until you are willing to organize your friends and neighbors and literally shut down cities - drive at 5mph through the streets of major cities on the freeway and stop commerce, refuse to show up for work, refuse to borrow and spend more than you make, show up in Washington DC with a million of your neighbors and literally shut down The Capitol you WILL be bent over the table on a daily basis." Karl Denninger

Don't blame me; I voted for Ron Paul.

Re: Good email I received on stroke identification
Be also aware that the ER docs might not believe your reports either. If so, be forceful, if needed, to be directly involved in the treatment and to be heard.

My SO suffered a TIA (minor stroke) and subsequent seizures and was taken to the ER via ambulance. The examining ER doc administered a MMSE (mini mental status exam), which SO failed. He thought it was 1984 while it was 2005, and he could only remember is first name.

SO had extremely slurred speech and an impairment in motor skills, but he could speak. Subsequently, the Dr. continued a verbal questioning while SO was cognitively impaired and proceeded to base the DX on this info. completely ignoring the info that I had provided.

SO reported that he had a problem with alcohol, which he doesn't...maybe in 1984 he drank a lot being a Brit who enjoyed his pubs but not in the handful of years I knew him prior to this event.

SO also reported he was an importer and just returned from Mexico the week prior. He has never been an importer, and the last trip to MX was 14 months prior.

The Dr. ignored the signs and ignored my info then DX and treated him for alcohol withdrawal with a differential DX of neurocysticercosis, a rare condition of tapeworm in the central nervous system that they were convinced he picked up in this imaginary trip to MX.

He was never treated for stroke, which was later confirmed with comparative MRIs.

I have provided the details of this experience to illustrate how important it is that caregivers become closely involved in what the doctors are doing. Do not, do not automatically trust your loved one is in good hands.

In our case, my SO survived the TIA and horrific treatment experience without disability. However, this inaccurate info is still in his med files WITHOUT the indication that he failed the MMSE. This info follows him wherever he goes in the US for treatment, and with new doctors, we have to explain the entire event and show proof of the failed MMSE and the incompetence of the doctors. We have been fighting for three years to have these corrections made.
