I think it's the law in most states that there has to be some initial warning or general indication that the conversation is being recorded.

unwarranted wiretapping is legal now. and do you really think they are gonna make a beep to tell you its happening?

im just worried that i may be being tapped by a family member. not that i have anything to hide, i just dont like the idea of being tapped.

No....in a lot of states it is one party to record. Although once upon a time I had a cell phone where every time I called someone right before it would ring it would beep. It was the only phone that ever did that. (At the time I was using drugs and I could see why I would be recorded.)

That 15 second beep was once required if you were recording.

Today, it's broadly ignored by all, including governmental agencies who should know better. If the court orders a wire tap on phones, etc., as part of an investigation, there is NO BEEP and NO EVIDENCE it's recorded if it's done right.

However, both law enforcement and the telcos have been known to get sloppy and do the tap badly and/or cross connect the tap so that it is a two way circuit. Then you may hear background noise from the third party location on the line. Usually they're only recordiing - so there is no background, but if the tap is being monitored live, you may hear conversations at the monitorING location if they're sloppy.

VOIP service combined with VPN routers are supposed to be almost impossible to tap. I do not know now to implement both, but understand it can be done by a talented computer or phone guy. I do know it requires both ends to have the vpn units that match and are programmed as a pair. Other than that, you're fucked because the government can tap about anything they want to at any time with or without a court order. You're only hope for avoiding same is to fly under their radar and not be "a person of interest" if you possibly can manage that.
