Case History — Serial Rapist
On June 14, an unknown offender abducted Tina from her
rural home in front of her 5-year-old son. Her nude body
was discovered the next day in a wooded area. She had been
shot in the head with a large caliber weapon
Her residence and a large yard were bordered on all sides
with trees. There were plenty of locations where someone
could watch her undetected from the tree line.
Tina had just returned home from work and had picked up
her son Jonathan at day care. She entered her home and
changed. As Tina and Jonathan walked out of the house to
feed their dog in the dog pen, a strange man walked from the
wood line and at gunpoint forced Tina into her red Ford
Escort. Her son Jonathan ran to his uncle’s house and told
him that a white man with brown hair and white jeans, with
a large silver gun, had taken his mother in her car and left
him behind. The uncle immediately called police.

Victimology

The victim was an attractive 26-year-old woman. She was
5'3", 130 pounds, with blond hair and hazel eyes. She lived
alone with her 5-year-old son. She had been married and
divorced but had no contact with her ex-husband. She
worked as a sales associate for a local tool company. There
were men interested in dating her. They were interviewed
extensively, and none were suspect. She did not socialize or
date often because of a medical problem that many did not
know about. At the time she gave birth to Jonathan, a part
of her colon was torn, which left her incontinent at times. If she got excited or scared, she would void her bowel. The
young woman was obviously self-conscious of her condition
and avoided dating and socializing.
The Investigation
Detectives entered the victim and car information into NCIC
because Tina’s residence was near a major highway, and it
was thought that someone may have carjacked her and her
vehicle to escape or leave the area in a hurry. An aerial search
was initiated, and all police agencies in the area were put on alert. Family members and friends were interviewed. Tina
had been married but had not been in contact with her
husband for some time. There was no sign of the victim or her car. The initial search continued until 4:00 A.M.

The following morning the search was resumed and all alarms were retransmitted. Police requested
that Jonathan be reinterviewed by a child psychologist
using play therapy to gain a better description of the
unknown white male and the sequence of events. The victim
had a cell phone in her car. The number was called repeatedly with no answer. Detectives requested a trace for any calls made from this instrument.
Detective Rusty Clevenger received a call from a Wildlife
Officer, who reported that he saw the victim’s car on a small road that served as an entrance to a deer hunting club. He noted the plate number and thought the car belonged to a deer hunter. The next day, he heard the alarm, checked his notes, and notified police. A helicopter was dispatched, and detectives rushed to the scene. The victim’s body was found within 30 yards of her vehicle. She had been shot once in the head and left at the scene.
Detective Clevenger asked a police officer, who was a longtime
resident of the area, if he knew of any possible suspects
who might be considered. The officer named David Duke as
a known sex offender. The detective immediately requested
any intelligence information on David Duke.

Canvass of the Area

The initial canvass in the area yielded two witnesses who saw a white male standing on the side of the road near the victim’s car. This was within an hour of the abduction. Their description of this white male matched David Duke, who was now considered a potential suspect. Residents in the area were able to identify Duke, who they saw walking from the area of the crime scene to his residence. Additional witnesses were located who saw Duke near the victim’s residence the day of the abduction. Witnesses who lived next door to Duke saw a small red car drive by their residence with a white female hanging from the passenger side yelling and screaming for help. Their description of the female matched Tina, and Tina’s car was red. In addition, the crime scene detectives found Tina’s cellular phone in the vicinity of where the witnesses saw Duke.

Initial Interview and Investigation of Suspect

When detectives finally located Duke, they noticed he was
limping. He refused to give any information on how he had
gotten hurt. However, he provided an extensive alibi.
One of the recommended tactics of Geberth (1996) is to get
the suspect to talk by not interrupting him with questions.
Allow the suspect to expand on his alibi and seemingly go
along with his story, as preposterous as it sounds. There is no
way that the offender will be able to corroborate this concocted
story. Instead, the authorities will be able to use the
words of the offender to trap him in his own web of deceit.
He stated he had been driven to work that day by a man who
later told police that Duke asked to be let out about a mile
from the victim’s home. Duke told this witness that his boy
was sick, and he had to visit him at the hospital. This turned
out to be untrue. Detectives ascertained that Duke was a
smoker, who exclusively smoked Winston cigarettes. This
was significant because an empty pack of Winston cigarettes
and Winston cigarette butts were found in the area of the
victim’s residence at the tree line. Later, DNA was extracted
from these discarded cigarette butts and matched to Duke.
Duke also told the detectives that he went drinking the day
of the abduction. He identified his drinking buddies as two
men, named Terry and Ricky. The investigators were unable
to locate any such persons. In his statement to police, Duke stated that he had never been near the victim’s car. This proved to be extremely important, because the police had located a single fingerprint of the suspect inside
the victim’s car. Also, Duke’s footwear was matched to impressions recovered at the crime scene in
the vicinity of the victim’s car. The investigation revealed that Tina had been shot with a .357. Detectives learned that Duke had possession of a .357 pistol some time earlier, after taking it from the owner.

Signature Aspect and Modus Operandi

There was a distinc pattern of behavior of the suspect. The
suspect was a serial rapist, who 20 years earlier, raped a young mother at gunpoint in LaGrange, GA. Detectives discovered a number of similar rapes by the suspect, some of which were not originally reported. In each case, Duke stalked his victims and planned his crimes.
Duke reportedly raped two of his wives and took one wife
to the same area where Tina’s body was found. Duke usually
targeted a woman with a small child. He picked a certain
type of victim with similar looks. He would look for a woman
who was timid, vulnerable, and submissive, and because of
her child, would cooperate with his demands.

Disposition

Tina was killed because she had a medical problem that
caused her to suffer from incontinence. Her killer, who obviously made detailed plans to abduct and sexually assault
her, became outraged when she soiled herself. In his rage, he shot her to death. A young woman was slaughtered, and a
young 5-year-old boy was left without a mother.
Duke pled guilty to the murder and received a life sentence.

The author reviewed other cases where an offender, who had planned an attack, with an obvious sexual fantasy, gained control over his victim only to have some unforeseen circumstance emerge. In one particular case,
a young woman, who was taking laxatives, had been stripped and bound in her bed. She obviously was extremely frightened and voided her bowels. In this case, it was the victim’s incontinence that enraged and angered the
offender, because it ruined his sexual fantasy. In other cases, it was a victim who was menstruating at the time of the attack. In any event, it is another element to take into consideration during the investigation.

We REALLY need to build a huge wall somewhere and throw all these fuckers over it. Any lawyer stepping up for the civil rights" of these miscreants should be thrown over as well.
