GLP Joggers Club - Runners & Joggers Unite
The holidays are over and the weather is becoming more milder and the snow is melting.

Perfect time to brush the dust off your running shoes.

If you've been running through out the winter, props to you, that's something I have a hard time keeping up with, the cold air suffocates my lungs harder than uncured ganja.

Today is my first time running in more than a few months.

I ran 3K today.

This thread is my online jogging journal.

I highly recomend a pair of GOOD running shoes or gel insoles. Happy Feet and Asics are what I recomend.

My gear: Asics Kayano 14's. The BEST Gel Running shoes on the planet, IMO.

Use this thread as a Journal and motivational tool to log your progress and health goals.

I will like to clock 3K a day, then work my way up to 12K every other day. Some sprinting to build fast twitch muscle mass and long distance running to build all muscle fiber.

Grab your Ipod & Running shoes and JOIN ME!
See ya.

EXCELLENT.

Walking is the TRUE measure of health, some say... anybody can run a mile in a few minutes, but not everyone can walk continuously for 30 minutes at a time at a moderate or high pace or on an incline.

More power to you, and THANK YOU for participating in a thread to promote a healthy lifestyle.

All the best with your health goals, and keep us updated on your progress.

Todays Journal Entry:

Distance - Time - Location - Notes

3k - Not measure - #3 Road Dyke, Richmond - Stretched before, after and during the run. Stretching is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. It helps build muscle tone and increases flexibility. Your goal for running shouldn't be to destroy muscle fiber but to keep your legs and body in a leaner shape. Stretching promotes muscle growth and building. My lungs & heart were killing me near the end of the run, but I persevered and it felt like 10 orgasms. 15 minutes later I still have the good feelings of the various chemical cocktail of the runners high.

To do: Buy Nike Running Ipod Thing. Keep running journal on GLP updated and motivate my lazy ass to RUN everyday to build up my lungs, destroy toxings and reap all the benefits.

All the best.

A fellow Asicer, excellent choice... I recommend Asics to everyone, the layer of gel really removes any back/leg problems jogging is notorious for.

Running for Weight Loss

Many people start running because they want to lose weight. As one of the most vigorous exercises out there, running is an extremely efficient way to burn calories and drop pounds. A 150-pound person will burn approximately 100 calories per mile when running.

Healthy Eating is the First Step

If you hope to lose weight by running, keep in mind that you'll only shed pounds if you burn more calories than you consume. To lose a pound, you have to burn, through exercise or life functions, about 3600 calories. So you'll need to combine running with a healthy diet. Runners do have special nutrition needs, but the basic principles for healthy eating still apply. Try choosing smaller portions of high-fat and high-calorie foods and eating more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

One common eating mistake among runners is that they overcompensate for the calories burned by exercise with extra calories from more food and beverages. Some runners even find that they gain weight, despite their regular training. One way to prevent "stealth calorie" consumption is to write everything you're eating in a journal for a few weeks. Seeing a record of your food intake will help you see where your diet needs improvement. It will also keep you on track because you'll think twice before putting that chocolate-covered donut in your mouth.

Get more tips on how to avoid overeating by controlling your portion sizes.

Run Regularly

If you want to lose weight, you're not going to get it off by running once a week. It's best to get some activity every day but, if that's not possible, try to shoot for at least 3-4 times per week. If you find that your motivation to run is suffering, follow these tips to get inspired.

Incorporating speed work or interval training (running at a very fast speed for short intervals of time) into your running routine can also help your weight loss efforts. Speed work burns a great amount of calories in a short period of time. You'll also increase your muscle mass and improve your resting metabolism, causing you to burn more calories throughout the day.

Eating for Performance

If you're running regularly and you're training for a long-distance event, proper nutrition is especially critical for your performance. Skipping meals doesn't allow you to train with adequately fueled muscles. You shouldn't skimp on calories before, during (when necessary), and immediately after your very intense and long workouts. These are crucial times when nutrition is important to performance and recovery.

What Should I Eat and Drink the Day Before a Long Run?

Question: What Should I Eat and Drink the Day Before a Long Run?

You nutrition and hydration during the days leading up to your long run is critical to your performance and comfort.
Answer: The two days before your long run (and your marathon) should be high-carb days. You should make sure that you increase the percentage of carbs in your diet, not the overall calories. Carbo-loading does not mean that you should eat three plates of pasta for dinner! Aim for at least 65% of calories from carbs during those days. You can still have some protein but, for example, instead of having chicken with rice, have rice with chicken. Pasta, steamed or boiled rice, potatoes, fruits, starchy vegetables, and breads are good carb sources. Avoid gas-forming foods like beans and any type of food that may upset your stomach or can interfere with sleep.

Drink plenty of water and nonalcoholic fluids. Not only does alcohol dehydrate you, but it can also prevent you from getting a good night's sleep.

Re: GLP Joggers Club - Runners & Joggers Unite
5 Smart Eating Rules for Runners

Runners need to eat healthy to fuel their workouts properly and help build stronger bodies. Follow these sensible and healthful eating rules to get the most out of your food -- and your runs.

1. Focus on unprocessed foods.

Try to keep your fridge and pantry stocked with foods that make up a nutritious, heart-healthy diet, such as whole grains, fish, lean meats, vegetables and fruits. They'll provide essential nutrients, help fuel your workouts properly and aid in your post-run recovery. Try to minimize the amount of processed foods you eat.

2. Eat small meals throughout the day.

Throw the notion of three large meals a day out the window -- it doesn't work for runners. You need more calories during the day than sedentary people, so it's better to spread them out with a small meal every three to four hours. You'll find that eating mini meals will help maintain your energy levels throughout the day.

3. Don't deny yourself the foods you love.

We all know what happens if you don't give in to your favorite foods: One day you'll have a monster craving and end up overindulging. It's better if you allow yourself small portions of the foods you love and not force yourself to eat foods you really don't like. In the long run, it will save you calories, because you'll feel more satisfied and you'll be less likely to binge and eat mindlessly. Eating in moderation is the key.

4. Mix things up.

Try to not get into the habit of eating the same foods day after day. Pasta often becomes a staple of a runner's diet, but there are lots of other healthful and interesting carb choices for runners, such as couscous, rice or quinoa. Different fruits and vegetables supply different nutrients, so it's important that you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables too.

5. Don't forget about protein.

Runners focus so much on consuming their carbs that their protein needs sometimes get forgotten. Protein is used for some energy and to repair tissue damaged during training. Protein should make up about 15% of your daily intake. Runners, especially those training for long distances such as marathons, should consume .5 to .75 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Good sources of protein are fish, lean meat, poultry, beans, nuts, whole grains, egg whites, low-fat milk, low-fat cheese and some vegetables.

Me too.

Hey, I am keeping a run log which lists 500+ miles over the last 2 years.

I take one hit of kb before I leave. In cool weather under 50F I can do 15 miles, in warmer weather 8 mi, on the south fla beachfront slogging in the sand 4.5 miles. (ahhhh)

My excel log lists date, location, miles, steps, time (run and walk), grade, and remarks.

Don't need fancy equipment. If you don't have ipod use earplugs. Occasional sprints help to release every drop of energy until you're left exhausted and purified.

Stay away from highways and polluted areas.

Once you get to two hours and beyond, after 20,000 steps or so, the endorphins really start to kick in. You will get a good night of sleep guaranteed! Good for whatever ails ya.

Thanks Raz!

2-1/2 miles around the lake (which sucks when the deer flies are swarming), and once or twice a week a 6 mile run adding another long leg to the lake run.

That's a pain, because that leg contains two long, steep hills, but it's great for ending the week, or when I'm in a bad mood and need to punish myself...lol

Usually 5 times a week, but sometimes I get lazy and knock one off with some lame excuse like a thunderstorm or tornado, etc.

EDIT: Oh, and I won't start running until it's at least above freezing during the day, which is about march-april...

There is about 100 miles of fire roads and trails in the national forest just a couple miles from home, so I try to mix it up, but I do have a couple favorite loops.
