However, notice that the rib cage of such a monkey is far shorter relative to the length of the torso than that of this creature:

However, we are comparing images of an adult skeleton with that of a young baby, so it is hard to draw a certain conclusion. Given that reservation, I would still put my money on this being a very young squirrel monkey. The rest of the story seems to be embroidery, as some of the comments indicate that the body was found like that, which contradicts the drowning tale.
