Just look at the math questions and the relation to farming. Most testing is memory recall, but you have to be able to comprehend and apply what you have remembered. |

anonymous coward. User ID: 571992 United States 03/08/2009 11:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thank You for Posting This! At almost 35, I could answer some of these satisfactorily. I didn't finish university, but I got to Junior Level. I still can't remember what a dipthong is; and I have a very difficult time with the mathematic conversions that would be necessary to figure these basic agricultural problems. Our modern schools pretend to be teaching such high standards by teaching my son "technology" in the sixth grade. This is just basically making power points presentations and using the computer and internet. Of course, my son is doing very well on this as it's all fun and games to him. Could my son even make a dent in this test. Not a chance and I would probably wouldn't pass it either. Father Forgive us for allowing our children to be stolen from in the form of lousy and incomplete education when we had been capable of so much better not even 100 years ago. My mother has some of my grandmother's textbooks and composition folders from her schooling in the 20's and 30's. Let me tell you, my grandmother knew how to write a composition and how to perform logical thinking at levels way above modern college graduates. Oh, what we have lost because we wanted someone else to do the hard work and we wanted to go along and get along. |

I am a substitute teacher, I see how crappy these students are taught every day. The stuff we learned in the 1970-1980's is by far more advanced that what they are doing today. For instance, in 6th grade I did a research paper on Germany. It had to have everything in it. Today's students are taught to be creative and bring in a white board with illustrations and some facts on the paper. That is it. We had to know the Preamble in 7th grade by heart. Today's students have no clue what it is. I go to school full time for a BA in History, but find it not really a good idea to become a teacher in today's society. For one reason, they fluff history up and don't give out the actual facts about what happened. Unless it is ancient history. American history is fluffed up. My biggest downfall is math. I suck at it and admit it. Today's students are asked too much for math and I see no reason why they have to do advanced math all the time vs what we learned in school They can learn advanced math in college. Science is the same thing every single year. It does not change. Each grade does the same thing over and over again. The only difference with today's students is that they have advanced technology to utilize. |

I'm an Electrical Engineering major and I am very thankful for the higher Maths i had at the high school level. I do see what you're saying though; not everyone needs or wants it. They'd be better off going more into grammer and history (world history, not just early American and western Europe). Some basic economics sure wouldn't hurt either. |

Our chemistry teacher failed every science class he ever took, and freely admitted it. In my opinion, many crimes are being committed against every young person forced to sit in these prisons every second that they are in there. And people still wonder why kids flip out and commit horrible crimes. Treat people like animals, and they will act like animals. She put two magnets on a rail and was surprised when they pushed against each other. She also could not figure out why putting an outboard motor, attached to a cart, in a bucket of water would not result in any forward motion. |
