Sharon to Peres: "Don´t worry about American pressure; we control America"

An acrimonious argument erupted during the Israeli cabinet weekly session last week between Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his foreign Minister Shimon Peres during which Sharon reportedly yelled at Peres, saying "don´t worry about American pressure, we control America."

According to Israel radio (in hebrew) Kol Yisrael, Peres warned Sharon Wednesday that refusing to heed incessant American requests for a cease-fire with the Palestinians would endanger Israeli interests and "turn the US against us."

At this point, a furious Sharon reportedly turned toward Peres, saying "every time we do something you tell me Americans will do this and will do that. I want to tell you something very clear, don´t worry about American pressure on Israel, we, the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it."

The radio said Peres and other cabinet ministers warned Sharon against saying what he said in public because "it would cause us a public relations disaster."

U.S. Tax Dollars at Work: Calculating Foreign Aid to Israel

Background: Since clashes erupted in the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel at the end of September, at least 275 people are dead and more than 9,000 wounded-90 percent of whom are Palestinian. Israel has placed the West Bank and Gaza under siege, closing Palestinian population centers off from one another and prohibiting the passage of people, medicine, and food. In downtown Hebron, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been under weeks of curfew, or essentially collective house arrest. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have referred to Israels response to the uprising as "excessive." The United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) adopted a resolution on October 19 which concurs with this description, as does UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1322, and an October 20 General Assembly resolution.

Against this backdrop of violence and international condemnation, it is crucial to examine more closely how the U.S. has contributed to Israel´s harsh crackdown. The United States provides a substantial amount of military aid and weaponry to Israel. Military hardware that Israel receives from the United States has included the Merkava tank and the Apache helicopter-both used against Palestinian civilians in an attempt to crush the uprising. Combining economic and military aid, Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. aid since World War II.
The common argument that the United States gives Israel $3 billion per year-$1.2 billion in economic aid and $1.8 billion in military aid-is misleading. This figure is impressive enough, since it represents about one-sixth of total U.S. foreign aid. Yet the true figure is even more remarkable, with estimates ranging as high as $5.5 billion per year. Calculating the exact amount of U.S. aid to Israel, however, is difficult. One has to make estimates because much of the aid is buried in the budgets of other government agencies, mostly the Department of Defense (DOD). Aid is also allotted in a form that is not easily quantifiable, such as the early disbursement of financial aid which allows Israel to gain (and the U.S. taxpayer to lose) the interest on the funds that have not yet been spent.

Aid to Israel from 1949 to 2001:
According to an October 27 Congressional Research Service (CRS) report, cumulative aid to Israel from 1949 through fiscal year (FY) 2000 was $81.38 billion. This number is too low because it omits "hidden" funds. While it includes the $1.2 billion promised to Israel in the Wye River Memorandum, the old Food for Peace program, and the current subsidy for "refugee resettlement," it omits money from the DOD budget on the grounds that those funds are for research and development projects that benefit both the United States and Israel-a questionable premise. The CRS total also excludes estimated interest on the early disbursement of aid.

Building up from the amount listed in the CRS, I have included-with details to follow-$4.28 billion from the DOD and $1.72 billion from interest accrued due to early aid disbursement. This comes to a total of $87.38 billion through September 30 of this year (the end of FY 2000). Add to this amount the $3.98 billion for FY 2001: This number includes $840 million in economic aid, $1.98 billion in military aid, $60 million for refugee resettlement, $250 million from the DOD budget, and $85 million in interest. The resulting grand total of the above calculations is $91.36 billion in aid to Israel through FY 2001.

Department of Defense:
Examining specific items from the DOD to Israel and from there estimating on the total costs, I arrived at approximately $3.42 billion. The largest expenditures were $1.3 billion for the cancelled Lavi attack fighter project, $628 million for the ongoing Arrow anti-missile project, and $200 million for the completed Merkava tank. The fact that the U.S. military was not interested in the Lavi, the Arrow, or the Merkava for its own use would seem to call into serious question the argument that these are "joint defense projects."

Interest:
Foreign aid is typically allocated out in quarterly installments. However, Israel began receiving early disbursement of U.S. economic aid in 1982, and of military aid in 1991. This special treatment has resulted in a significant payoff for Israel. According to the CRS statement cited earlier, in 1991 it was reported that Israel earned $86 million in interest on the economic aid money deposited in the U.S. Treasury. Since the period from 1982 to 1991 had relatively high interest rates, I used the figure of $860 million (86 x 10) as a conservative estimate for those 10 years. For the nine years since 1991, I used a six-percent rate for one-half of the economic aid, resulting in a total of $324 million. Regarding military aid, I applied the six-percent rate to one-half of the amount for the 10 years of aid that was disbursed early, or $540 million. I employed this reduced rate on only half of the amount because one must assume that the aid monies were drawn down over the course of the year.

Loans and Loan Guarantees:
Israel owes the U.S. government almost $3 billion in economic and military loans. Israeli officials are fond of saying that Israel has never defaulted on a loan from the United States. While this is technically true, the CRS report states that from FY 1994 through FY 1998, Israel received $29 billion in waived loans. It is, therefore, reasonable to consider all loans to Israel as generally the same as grants.

The amount of U.S. government loan guarantees to Israel was not included in the above calculations because they have not (yet) cost the United States any money. They are listed as "contingent liabilities"-that is, they would become liabilities to the United States should Israel default. The major loan guarantees were $600 million for housing between 1972 and 1990, the much publicized $10 billion for Soviet Jewish resettlement between 1992 and 1997, and about $5 billion to refinance military loans commercially. Currently, the total U.S. contingent liability for Israeli loans is about $10 billion.

U.S. Aid to Other Countries in the Region:
This impressive amount of aid becomes even more so when compared with the aid given to other countries in the Middle East. The $3 billion in annual aid to Israel-according to the most conservative estimate-compares with bout $2 billion for Egypt, $225 million for Jordan, and $35 million for Lebanon. U.S. aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA) is not earmarked, but it has been running at about $100 million a year.

Furthermore, the United States gives Israel all of its economic aid directly in cash, without requiring an accounting of how the funds are used. In contrast, aid to the PA is strictly controlled by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and is specified for particular programs, mostly for civil infrastructure projects. Special mention should also be made of the Wye agreement. All of the $400 million promised to the PA in the agreement is for economic aid, whereas all of the $1.2 billion for Israel is for specific military projects.

The only condition on the military aid to Israel from the foreign aid bill is that about 75 percent of it has to be spent in the United States. In addition, in contrast with other countries receiving military aid who purchase through the DOD, Israel deals directly with U.S. companies-with no DOD review. The military aid from the DOD budget is mostly for specific projects. These projects include the Merkava tank. As mentioned earlier, Israel has used these tanks against Palestinian protestors and to bomb civilian areas in cities and villages such as Ramallah and Beit Jala.

Despite international condemnation of Israels harsh repression of the Palestinian uprising, President Bill Clinton is asking for U.S. aid to increase. On November 4 Clinton requested that Congress consider granting an extra $450 million to Israel, with a suggestion that next years military aid to Israel increase by $350 million.

Cover-Up Alleged in Probe of USS Liberty

A former Navy attorney who helped lead the military investigation of the 1967 Israeli attack on the USS Liberty that killed 34 American servicemen says former President Lyndon Johnson and his defense secretary, Robert McNamara, ordered that the inquiry conclude the incident was an accident.

In a signed affidavit released at a Capitol Hill news conference, retired Capt. Ward Boston said Johnson and McNamara told those heading the Navy´s inquiry to "conclude that the attack was a case of ´mistaken identity´ despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary."

It was “one of the classic all-American cover-ups,” said retired Admiral Thomas Moorer, a former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman who spent a year investigating the attack as part of an independent panel he formed with other former military officials. The panel also included a former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, James Akins.

“Why would our government put Israel’s interests ahead of our own?” Moorer asked from his wheelchair at the news conference. He was chief of naval operations at the time of the attack.

Moorer, who has long held that the attack was a deliberate act, wants Congress to investigate.

War Crimes and Treason: Israel´s Deliberate Attack on the U.S.S. Liberty (1967)

TO THIS DAY, the family and friends of 13-year-old Iman al-Hams are at a loss to explain how or why she wandered into the “closed military zone” in Tal al Sultan in Rafah on her way to school on the morning of Oct. 6, 2004. Early wire service reports speculated that she might have been late for school and was taking a shortcut. The actual geography, however, makes that unlikely.

But Iman never made it to school, because she was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers, who riddled her body with bullets. As often happens when the Israeli army kills or injures Palestinians, the IDF delayed the ambulance from al Najjar Hospital trying to reach her. But with five bullets in her head—of the “at least 15” the Dr. Ali Musa, the hospital’s director, reported finding—Iman was dead long before she ever reached the hospital. Indeed, so much blood had soaked into her UNRWA school uniform and into the ground where she fell that her body was nearly bloodless when it finally reached the hospital.

Israeli army spokespersons quickly reported that the soldiers in the watchtower surveillance post thought the child was a courier for militants and concealing a bomb in her book bag—a claim most Palestinians found absurd. Not only is it virtually inconceivable that any militant group would allow a young girl to undertake a combat mission, there were many witnesses to the fact that Iman was never closer than 100 meters to any soldier in the fortified watchtower when the first shots were fired. And the IDF had to concede that a search of her book bag proved it contained only books.

Muddying the waters further were the next actions of “Captain R,” the company commander, who approached Iman—wounded, according to Palestinian witnesses, but alive and lying on the ground helpless—and first fired two shots into her at close range to “confirm the kill.” Then, according to IDF witnesses, he walked a short distance away, turned back, approached the child again and emptied the magazine of his automatic weapon into her body.

Although the IDF did admit fairly promptly that Iman’s shooting had been “a mistake,” “Captain R’s” initial explanation was that as he approached the child, he came under fire from militants some 300 yards away, and fired into the ground to deter fire. His superiors at first accepted his version of events, despite some notable lapses of logic. (How does firing at the ground “deter fire”? And since when, many asked, had the IDF been hesitant about returning Palestinian fire? And if the soldiers feared that Iman’s book bag held explosives, why risk detonation by spraying automatic fire near it?)

Still, as needless as Iman’s death seemed, the case might have ended there—as has happened with the deaths of so many other Palestinian children—had not soldiers in the Givati brigade anonymously approached the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot with a very different version of the events. It was they who testified to “Captain R’s” approaching the fallen child and “confirming the kill” with a hail of automatic fire. They expressed outrage that their own reputations as honorable soldiers had been “besmirched” by the commander’s insistence on “confirming the kill” of an unarmed schoolgirl.

There are many unofficial stories of IDF soldiers “confirming a kill”—i.e., firing a lethal shot, usually to the head, into an apparently mortally wounded enemy. Frequently, it is alleged, this is a misnomer: the victim has been wounded and is immobilized, but obviously is alive, and death is not confirmed, but inflicted. In any event, Israeli army regulations never mention the practice.

Allegations that the soldiers who spoke out were disgruntled because “Captain R” was a strict disciplinarian received little credence, and “Captain R”—whose name has never been revealed—was removed from active duty as the army continued its investigation.

In November, the soldiers’ veracity was confirmed when Israel’s Channel Two television broadcast a military communications tape of a conversation among some of the soldiers involved.

Troops firing with light weapons and machine guns on a figure moving in the “no entry zone” quickly realized their target was a young girl. Someone in the operations room asked: “Are we talking about a girl under the age of 10?” Replied a soldier in the surveillance watchtower, “It’s a little girl. She’s running defensively eastward, a girl of about 10. She’s behind the embankment, scared to death.”

Four minutes later, it was reported the girl had been hit and fallen. The surveillance tower reported, “Receive, I think that one of the positions took her out.” Operations asked, “What, she fell?” and the soldier in the tower replied, “She’s not moving right now.”

The tape records the company commander as saying: “I and another soldier…are going in a little nearer, forward, to confirm the kill...” After a pause, he added: “Receive a situation report—we fired and killed her. She was wearing pants, jeans, an undershirt, a shirt. Also, she was wearing a keffiyeh on her head. I also confirmed the kill. Over.”

Then “Captain R” added: “Anyone who’s mobile, moving in the zone, even if it’s a three-year-old, needs to be killed.”

“Captain R” has been indicted on five relatively light charges, including “illegal use of a weapon,” exceeding his authority to the extent of jeopardizing human life, and “obstructing justice” as a result of his initial false report.

As reported [last week] in the UK newspaper The Independent, Lea Tsemel, the Israeli lawyer representing Iman’s family, was angered by the charges, saying, “I believe that the commander and the soldiers who fired should all have been charged with murder.”

The prosecution, however, decided against even a manslaughter charge, apparently due to a lack of evidence as to which bullets actually killed the child. Based on the accounts of Palestinian witnesses, however, Iman’s parents believe their daughter was alive until “Captain R” approached and “confirmed the kill.”

Asked just how lenient the charges against “Captain R” really are, Tsemel explained that even if found guilty on all counts, “the Israeli court could sentence him to as little as three years.”

According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz,“Captain R’s” lawyer, Shamuel Shenfeld, called the accusations unfounded and said his client will plead innocent. This may make for a longer trial, but for a more thorough exploration of the evidence. There will, however, be no forensic evidence from the victim’s body. Not only do many devout Muslims consider post-mortem examinations to be shameful, but Samier al-Hams, Iman’s father, also considers it completely unnecessary. “It was clear from the TV interviews with the other soldiers who were with the Israeli officer they’re calling ‘R,’” he said, “that this ‘R’ is the killer of my daughter. I guess my daughter’s case will test the Israeli law,” he added.

To many Palestinians, it will test more than the technicalities of Israeli jurisprudence. When one mentions Iman al-Hams to people in Rafah, their questions have little to do with legal procedures. Why, you hear from person after person, were shots fired at all, when at least one soldier identified the small figure 100 yards from his fortified tower as a ‘little girl…running defensively…scared to death?’”

“Why did they have to shoot?” asked one neighbor. “She was running away from the prohibited zone.”

Captain R’s indictment has done little to protect Rafah’s children. In one week alone, several small children were injured by aerial shelling in the center of town, while on Sunday, Nov. 28, four-year-old Shaimaa Abu Shammala was shot in the neck while playing outside her home in Block O, and later died of her injuries. Whether on the street, inside their homes, or in their classrooms, there seems to be no real safety anywhere for the children of Rafah—not to mention the tens of thousands of other civilians here. As one mother in Block O put it, “It is open season on our children every day.”—M.O.

The Jew Who Fled Rio

The Jewish diplomat who ran a child prostitution ring out of the Israeli Embassy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil hopes to leave safe-haven Israel for a new diplomatic post in Australia.

February 12, 2005 -- The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that notorious child pornographer Arie Scher has been flagged as the replacement for Amir Laty, the former Israeli consul to Australia who was expelled amid extreme secrecy from Australia about a month ago.

The government has refused to explain why Laty, who was only 18 months into his posting, was forced to leave under the threat of deportation. It is believed, and has been widely reported, that Laty´s expulsion was related to espionage, as well as personal "indiscretions."

When the Department of Foreign Affairs was asked for an explanation on why Laty was banished, they suggested asking ASIO, Australia´s domestic spy agency. That the agency was involved confirmed speculation the expulsion was related to national security. Eventually, official sources told the Herald espionage was part of the reason Laty was kicked out. Reports subsequently emerged that Laty might have tried to penetrate "highly sensitive Australian intelligence."

In addition, reports of Laty´s indiscretions or "out of hours activities," as one official put it, have also emerged. A number of women have complained of his unwanted attentions and persistent phone calls. The women had thought at the time his behavior might have just come down to cultural difference -- but they were unnerved nevertheless. Then a report emerged yesterday that Laty had a relationship in Canberra with a woman who worked for the Defense Department.

Arie Scher´s choice as Laty´s replacement has already sparked outrage. According to dozens of reports, including one in the Israeli newspaper Ma´ariv, Scher abandoned his posting at the Israeli embassy in Brazil five years ago after being implicated in child pornography and before police were able to question him.

Scher, who was the Israeli vice-consul in Rio, and at one point the consul-general, was charged with running an illegal child pornography and prostitution business. The investigation began when an underage girl testified that she was filmed and photographed by Hebrew language teacher
George Schteinberg having sex with Israeli tourists. She also told police that Scher participated in the sessions. In a search of Schteinberg´s residence, photographs of children posed on a car with diplomatic plates were discovered, as well as "massive quantities" of child pornography. Police then traced the car in the pictures back to the Israeli Embassy in Rio de Janeiro.

A search of Scher´s apartment confirmed that photographs found at Schteinberg´s residence had been taken in the vice-consul´s luxury penthouse. "We confirmed that the pornographic pictures were taken next to the consul´s pool and on his deck," said Roberto Costa, a chief investigator for the civil police. After Brazilian authorities notified the Israeli embassy of plans to revoke Scher´s diplomatic immunity, he fled. According to the Brazilian federal police, Scher departed at 12:57 in the morning for Israel by way of Buenos Aries, Argentina.

Agent Icaro Silva of the Brazilian Police Commission (Copacabana) said that Scher is considered a fugitive wanted for creating child pornography. His escape resulted in a request to Interpol that Scher be arrested if he ever leaves Israel and that the Brazilian government be notified of any developments in this case.

Prior to Scher´s flight, Mr. Schteinberg confirmed that he had assisted in taking nude photographs in the consul´s apartment, and that he had sexual relations with a girl, age 11, who was living with him at the time of his arrest. Agent Silva said the pre-teen had been living with Schteinberg for almost a year, "as had been arranged by Scher." Silva told reporters that nine complete pornographic Web sites were found on the hard drive of Schteinberg´s computer, and all were in Hebrew, the language that Schteinberg taught. "We want to determine the names of the other girls who appear in those photos," said the commission agent. He added that the Web sites confirm that Schteinberg was running an Internet service that brought Israeli tourists to Brazil to have sex with the children.

Silva also connected Scher to another notorious child pornographer, a retired professor by the name of Ablio Nogueira de Faria, age 78, who was in jail for producing child pornography. A document titled "An Investigation of Arie Scher," written by an unnamed American, was found in the retiree´s home which contained descriptions of criminal acts by Scher. "We want to know if some connection between the cases exists, therefore Nogueira will be interrogated again," Silva told reporters.

Israel and Brazil do not have an extradition treaty but the Brazilian Government asked the Israeli Government to return Scher. Brazil´s Ministry of Foreign Relations delivered a formal request to Israel´s Foreign Ministry stating that Rio de Janeiro´s 31st criminal precinct had a criminal case pending against the Jew.

The request was sent to Brazil´s embassy in Tel Aviv on October 2001 and later forwarded to the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Ma´ariv reported that Israel refused to extradite Scher and instead conducted its own investigation. They found that Scher had merely "behaved inappropriately for a diplomat." And banned him from foreign diplomatic missions for five years.

A spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, Mark Regev, confirmed the disciplinary hearing upon Scher´s return from Brazil five years ago. "He was a young and single man at the time. Now he is married and he´s six years older and there is no reason why he shouldn´t make an excellent diplomatic appointment in Australia," Regev told the Herald on Friday.

Other Israeli sources told the Sydney Morning Herald that because of the public nature of the allegations, the Scher inquiry was quietly held at the highest level of the country´s Civil Service Commission. They determined that "while some of his behavior was unbecoming, there was nothing close to criminal."

"He made a mistake when he was younger but there is no reason why he should not go on to have a very strong career as a diplomat," Regev said.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry assured the Herald that Scher´s appointment was "just pending" and he had not left for Australia. "The decision to send him to Australia stands but because of concerns that were raised, the case is being looked at at the highest levels of the ministry," Regev said.

Aryeh "Arie" Scher was born in Tel Aviv and spent much of his childhood in Netanya, Israel. His father was a Jew from Austria; his mother was a Jewess from Italy. He entered the United States, apparently legally, and lived for a while in San Diego, where he taught Hebrew and worked as an administrator for a vacation resort.

In between his visits to California, Scher spent four years in the Israel Army´s "Nachal" corps, a quasi-religious military brigade primarily tasked with harassing and expropriating the Palestinian people. After leaving the IDF, Scher went to Australia for a while, where he networked with Jewish student organizations. Afterward, he returned to Israel to study at the University of Tel Aviv, majoring in Public Administration with a minor in Political Science.

After graduating, Scher spent two years in China as an assistant consular diplomat. His apprenticeship completed, Scher was assigned to the Israeli Embassy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Scher is fond of suntanning on beaches, often naked. Scher is believed to be homosexual, in addition to being a pedophile.

Georges Schteinberg came to Brazil to teach Hebrew at the prestigious A. Liessin university in Rio de Janeiro. At least, that´s what he told his gullible goy friends. He was the accomplice of Arie Scher (see above), assisting the diplomat in the procurement of children for prostitution and handling the Internet end of the child prostitution business. Schteinberg "sampled the wares."

Both Scher and Schteinberg are Jews who had been considered decent and responsible men before a police investigation uncovered their filthy exploitation of children. Now you might have an idea of where Internet child pornography really comes from - Jews make it, Jews upload it, and Jews profit by selling it. Furthermore, Jews use the pornography that they, themselves, created to justify their efforts at censoring the Internet (so that they can subsequently use those censorship laws to get rid of Web sites like this one).

And yet, really, this Jewish habit of foully exploiting the innocent should have been anticipated from the beginning, since many Jews believe (as a religious conviction) that they have a license to do anything they wish with gentiles, including raping their children. The lesson of this story is that the Jews are very, very good at making a false appearance of righteousness and respectability while being, in reality, a danger to the non-Jews among whom they live. Arie Scher got off with a "slap on the wrist" after finding refuge in Israel. That is why Israel exists, and it is why some Jews never live there until after they have been caught committing crimes elsewhere.

Case in point: The refusal of the Israeli Supreme Court to extradite Samuel Sheinbein to the United States for trial for murder. In order to avoid being tried for his crimes in the United States, Sheinbein´s relatives evidently arranged for him to flee to Israel, where fugitive Jews often go. The prosecutor in the Maryland county where Sheinbein committed his crime demanded Sheinbein´s extradition from Israel to the United States, but the Israeli Supreme Court refused to allow it. Here´s what I found written about that decision (read carefully).

"It isn’t a question of his guilt or innocence. Neither is it a matter of avoiding justice. At issue is the sanctity of the concept of Israel as refuge."

The second and third sentences in that quotation are in direct conflict, after the usual manner of Jewish doublethink. The "high Jews" aren´t really concerned about justice. They don´t care whether Sheinbein committed the crime, and they don´t much care about the question of justifiability in the event that Sheinbein did kill his victim. What matters to them is "the sanctity of the concept of Israel as a refuge," a place were Jews can go when their own actions provoke the gentiles against them, a place where they can EVADE retribution of any kind, legal or not, deserved or not. So it is a matter of avoiding justice, but not just for Sheinbein alone. It´s a matter of keeping Israel a place where any ratty Jew can avoid justice.

WHILE an Israeli real estate magnate from Australia insured his 99-year lease on the retail space of the World Trade Center against terrorism, one of Israel´s biggest companies pulled out of the north tower just days before Sept. 11.

AFP has learned from a reliable source in the shipping industry that Zim American Israeli Shipping Co., Inc. broke the lease when it vacated the rented offices on the 16th and 17th floors of the north tower of the World Trade Center shortly before the Sept. 11 disaster.

According to the source, Zim´s WTC office space had been leased until the end of the year and the company lost $50,000 when it suddenly pulled out in the beginning of September.

The parent company, Zim Israel Navigation Co., is nearly half-owned by the state of Israel, the other half held by Israel Corp. Zim is one of the world´s largest container shipping companies, operating an international network of shipping lines.

AFP repeatedly contacted Zim American Israeli Shipping Co., Inc. at its new American headquarters in Norfolk, Va., to inquire about the company´s pulling out of its WTC lease early.

AFP was told that the only person who could discuss the matter was the company president, Shaul Cohen-Mintz, who was said to be unavailable until Dec. 4.

AFP also contacted the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the original owner of the World Trade Center, and was told to contact Silverstein Properties, owner of the World Trade Center since July 24.

Silverstein passes all media related questions to the public relations company of Howard J. Rubenstein, which also represents the state of Israel.

Steve Solomon of Rubenstein told AFP that the company "had no information on the leases" and advised AFP to contact the tenant directly.

Calls to Ezra Bentob of Zim´s legal department were not returned.

An Israeli businessman from Australia, Frank Lowy, had recently acquired the 99-year lease for the 425,000 square foot retail portion of World Trade Center before the WTC attacks of Sept. 11, reported The Jerusalem Post on Sept. 12.

Lowy is chairman and founder of Westfield Holdings, and the manager of Westfield America Trust, which has a 57 percent stake in Westfield America Inc. In April 2001, Westfield America agreed to pay $400 million for the lease on the complex though only $133 million was paid; the rest was to be made in ground lease payments.

Lowy is the second wealthiest man in Australia and was recently ranked as the 209th wealthiest man in the world by Forbes magazine. Westfield is the fourth-largest shopping mall owner, with operations in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Westfield was insured against terrorist attacks and its earnings will not be materially affected.

In a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange the retail chain said that "investment in the retail component of the World Trade Center is fully insured for both capital and loss of income," adding "the insurance coverage includes acts of terrorism.
