Does the Gov't or Obama realize *Spending* and *Things* do not make people happy?
We constanly hear on the News the recession is ending, meanwhile companies are continuing to go out of business..

For the last 30 years we have been on a *Spending Spree* from buying the latest gadgets to the biggest houses and cars, to botox injections and breast implants to blackberrys and MP3's the list seems to be endless....

However where are all these people at anyway's? From what I see they are on the Internet, blogging, chatting, discussing
debating, looking for the biggest need we as human beings need and want, human contact and connection.

As a Kid I remember my neighborhood was one big huge party and social network, my mom always having the neighbors over for coffee or dinner, kids outside playing dodgeball climbing some tree or using the hose to fill up balloons and have a all and out water balloon fight...Maybe it was just hanging out and sitting on the porch talking about anything that comes to mind....

Sunday was always a day for church and going to granny's, most in my neighborhood knew Sunday was family day...Seeing your grandparents, Aunts Uncles and Cousins...

I don't think any of us Kids in the Baby Boomer generation thought we would be around to see a world we hardly recognize at times, or such a dramatic change of culture.

I look at my neighborhood now and see people locked in there homes, no one socializes, no one even knows the neighbors, trees are only for birds and kids are out of sight of neighbors who are seen as potential predators.

I somtimes wonder if the neighbors are doing the same thing
I am doing, on the Internet still looking for that connection to people I once had as a child in my neighborhood.

Maybe one day Obama will say people get back to the basics
Stop spending and realize we need to knock on the neighbors door and say...How would you like to come over for dinner?

Great post! Completely agree that we need to cut back on our consumption.

I just buy what I need and prefer spending money on social things like traveling the world instead! Things that create those amazing memories.

I mean come on, who remembers that old 32" tv they bought years back? For the same price as a wonderful trip to Thailand for instance, which even though I was only 8 years old, remember like yesterday.

Obama is just being in touch with his feminine side. My old lady loves to spend money and have 'things', shit, she gets depressed if I don't take her to the mall at least once a month to buy 'things'.

Very sweet memories, but what has this got to do with Obama? He hasn't been President for 30 years. His Stimulus package was SUPPOSED to stimulate the economy to give jobs to people. This will allow them to stay in their homes and put food on the table. That is a far cry from spending like drunken sailors on the latest gadgets. What is your plan for getting America back on its feet, just letting everything close down and hope for the best? You can't eat nostalgia.

Wait a minute...

The point is if the status quo is to continue then spending must continue.

Our economy is a consumer economy. This was long before Obama came to town.

Perhaps your question should be: Does Obama realize that we are staring at the conclusion to years of wanton spending, and is he frightened by the notion that the status quo is going away?

Exactly, and an economy based on consumption can't go on forever so something has to be done. Money itself has no value at all, the value comes from everybody's consumption patterns.

Imagine if robots did all the work for us there wouldn't be any money. So where does the money come from?

It's such a stone age way of living which was great when there was scarcity but as technology improves it makes our economy more obsolete. Hence our forced consumption pattern to keep the wheel spinning.

An economy should be based on the amount of resources we have on the planet, monetary or not.

Re: Does the Gov't or Obama realize *Spending* and *Things* do not make people happy?
People were spending on junk way before Obama came in office. LOL

Anyway, I do agree with the way you discribed the way people isolate themselves now.

I tend to think that it has more to do with society which has shifted to two working parents as opposed to one. Most children are told to stay inside and lock the doors.

And also the endless bombardment of scary news stories MSN gives us: terrorists, kidnappers, pedophiles, etc... has caused people to be more mistrustful of one another.

It really is sad how isolated we have become. I do remember the carefree childhood days of roaming the neighborhood. But back then, there were lots of moms home watching out for all the kids. And if a suspecious car did slow down, all you had to do was run to the nearest house and there was bound to be someone home to let you in.

The feeling of community in real life has all but disappeared. That's probably why people now seek it on the internet.

Very True!
We live in a very un-trusting society, people are usually estranged or live far from there extended families
Pretty sad.

All the Mom's were home when I was a kid and watched out for
everyone outside playing, but that was the day's Dad could make a living for Mom and 5 Kids with no problems!

Without debt there would be no money...

Money as Debt (part 1 of 5)
[link to www.youtube.com]
When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.

Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

Oh, for Gods Sake! How many Senators do you think change the oil themselves or change a tire? When you see him, he looks like an ordinary guy, going to his daughter's soccer games in slacks and a jacket, jogging without a shirt on. What could this guy ever do to stop such snide girly comments? How do you know he has a $100 manicure? Sounds much more like a Republican trait to me.

And WHO promoted that off-shoring? Bush!! He even put in tax incentives so that companires that off-shored got TAX BREAKS over those companies that stayed here.

Now suddenly it is all Obama's fault that he inherited a country in collapse where the only growing job market is in fast food restaurants.

So, if he tries to get involved in pump starting the economy, to get industries started again with a stimulus, you people then jump on his back for being a socialist! He cannot win with you people, can he?

How is he supposed to get real jobs here? Do we have Congress simply outlaw any corporations operating in the US that have off-shored American jobs? They will then simply leave and make Puerto Rico their headquarters, thereby bypassing taxes and other American laws (another nice setup that Bush did in his reign - there are now over 22,000 businesses that have set up their headquarters in Puerto Rico to get away from pulling their weight here).

Do we have Congress put stiff tariffs on imports?

While you are all reminiscing about Mayberry, tell me what Obama should do.
