Read this story for inspiration and a TRUE positive sign of hope. A death sentence is not always required.

Compassionate storekeeper changes robber’s mind
Posted: 09:08 PM ET

From Kiran Khalid
CNN

NEW YORK (CNN) — A potential victim became a compassionate counselor during a recent robbery attempt, changing the would-be criminal’s mind — and apparently his religion.

Storekeeper Mohammad Sohail was closing up his Long Island convenience store just after midnight on May 21 when — as shown on the store’s surveillance video — a man came in wielding a baseball bat and demanding money.

“He said, ‘Hurry up and give me the money, give me the money!’ and I said, ‘Hold on’,” Sohail recalled in a phone interview with CNN on Tuesday, after the store video and his story was carried on local TV. Sohail said he reached under the counter, grabbed his shotgun and told the robber to drop the bat and get down on his knees.

“He’s crying like a baby,” Sohail said. “He says, ‘Don’t call police, don’t shoot me, I have no money, I have no food in my house.’”

Amidst the man’s apologies and pleas, Sohail said he felt a surge of compassion. He made the man promise never to rob anyone again and when he agreed, Sohail gave him $40 and a loaf of bread.

“When he gets $40, he’s very impressed, he says, ‘I want to be a Muslim just like you,’ ” Sohail said, adding that he had the would-be criminal recite an Islamic oath.

“I said ‘Congratulations. You are now a Muslim and your name is Nawaz Sharif Zardari.’”

When asked why he chose the hybrid of two Pakistani presidents’ names, the Pakistani immigrant laughed and said he had been watching a South Asian news channel moments before the confrontation. Sohail said the man fled the store when he turned away to get the man some free milk.

He said police might still be looking for the suspect but he doesn’t intend to press charges.

“The guy, you know, everybody has a hard time right now, it’s too bad for everybody right now in this economy,” said the storekeeper.

Man's symbiotic connection with the cosmos will be known and there is nothing which can stop that knowing. Because everything we all do everyday helps confirm that truth. It is just that we haven't reached the pinnacle of where it leads. But we will soon enough. We will either live or die with that knowledge. Between Heaven and Earth is us.

Be brave young warriors in truth.

Oh....to clear up the irony of a gun making a man break down like that and beg for his life.

Do you think that could also be an example/metaphor of something on a larger scale ? Do you think it is good that only the threat of losing a life can make people behave ?

that is all : )

I don't think I would kill an intruder to my home. I am capable of delivering a non-lethal shot that can incapacitate. At that point, we could discuss moral issues while he is at gunpoint, at the mercy of two dogs and wounded. If all he wants is some cash, fine, I'll give him some. Food, same deal. But he will think twice and thrice before attempting robbing again, while he recovers in the hospital.

isn't the threat of death or worse allways what has been used for control?

as for behaveing, noone behaves, they just learn not to be seen doing bad thing, or like the rich, they pay off
whom ever so they don't get in trouble .

isn the only difference is wheather you are rich or not,

would a store owener in say the midwest who is middle class have shot the guy?
or is it that store owner on longisland , who is maybe not rich but well off enuff to not shot the guy?

I wonder if the fact that he had a shotgun pointed at his teeth had something to do with his sudden desire to convert to Islam.

And of course go to prison on top of it.

but let me ask you this.......what is proportionate to the crime ? and is there disproportionate on such a scale that it makes the "victim" the true bad guy ? See what i mean ? How far should punishment for a crime go ? What percentages of crimes are really terrible ? And for the ones that are really terrible. What created that circumstance and person that is so terrible ?

I for one dont believe people are born monsters. Something makes them like that. That "born monster" thing sounds like intellectual laziness and spiritual laziness to me.

We must try harder.

The only problem with this is.
The guys need to convert the robber to Islam at gunpoint.

Well to look even deeper is to see this .....the gun is used for many forms of persuasion in this world. Is it not ? All religions. All groups from street gangs to government gangs have used the threat of the gun to get what they want.

But we will see what this threat philosophy leads to. In a very big way. What we get is what we believe in. As a group. And there are NO pacifist. Just some use a different form of weapon. I myself use the sword of truth.

Try harder, but don't be a fool. Keep an open mind, but don't let your brain fall out. Facing prison to me, is an acceptable thing when it comes to the possibility of using non-lethal, or lethal, measures to defend my children from harm.

UPDATE:

US store owner who showed mercy on would-be robber gets thank you note, $50 in the mail
03/12/2009 9:02:00 AM
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SHIRLEY, N.Y. - A convenience store owner who showed mercy to a would-be robber says he's received an apology note and $50 in the mail.

The unsigned note said it was from the man who tried to rob Mohammad Sohail, who has a store on Long Island, near New York City. The note said the would-be robber has a new job, a new child, and is staying out of trouble.

Sohail told the newspaper Newsday that he is saving the $50 for charity.

The bat-wielding man tearfully told Sohail in May that he was trying to feed his family. The rifle-toting businessman gave him $40 and bread, and made him promise never to rob again.
