SUDDEN SUPER SUNSPOT 1024 being upgraded to C-Class Flares
[link to spaceweather.com]

SUDDEN SUPER SUNSPOT: Sunspot 1024 is crackling with B- and C-class solar flares. The activity is so intense, astronomers can't seem to take a picture of the sunspot without catching a flare in action.

For those of you who were saying yesterday that it will only be B-Class solar flares from this sunspot.

Scientists are surprised by the intensity of this sunspot which wasn't expected to go over B-Class.

I wonder if it will get stronger.

We will see soon.

Re: SUDDEN SUPER SUNSPOT 1024 being upgraded to C-Class Flares
The biggest solar flare of Cycle 24 to date, a C2.7 took place at 0713 UTC on Sunday morning.

Sunspot 1024 continues to maintain its size and still shows the strength for B-Class flares, however the threat of larger flares may be diminishing.

Saturday's Sunspot number of 24 ties the Cycle 24 record set on October 16, 2008. Even though that seems small, it is at least a good step forward.

AS a matter of interest, how long does it take for a "flare" to reach us. Are we talking a day or so, by any chance?

Yes, but none of them have a subject line for the C-Class Flares that were seen today and have been announced on SpaceWeather.com today.

Also, those threads were posted yesterday not today with the update.

And besides what is this insistence of only having one thread per subject?

 Quoting: Merlin

Solar flares are violent explosions in the sun's atmosphere. They contain the equivalent energy of a billion megaton hydrogen bomb, and are the most violent explosion in the solar system. Solar flares and their cousins, Coronal Mass Ejections send out streams of highly energetic particles in the solar winds which interact with and increase the ionization of our atmosphere. In effect, this ionization excites the atmosphere, making it extend farther into space and increasing drag on satellites. This can cause orbital decay, resulting in the satellite burning up in the atmosphere as it descends. Solar flares also produce streams of protons, which pass through our atmosphere and can even pass through a human body, causing biochemical damage. Most proton storms take about 2 hours from the time of first sighting to reach Earth, though at least one in 2005 took only 15 minutes to reach us

I read this on Space.com:

Big ejections from the Sun can be 1-10 billion tonnes, moving at 400-1000 km/sec (approximately 1-2 million mph) and take more than a day to pass Earth, after the sudden onset (often a leading-edge shock wave)

There is a rather large spot and several flares. I would call that unusual after months of a blank sun.

Re: SUDDEN SUPER SUNSPOT 1024 being upgraded to C-Class Flares
Is anyone being affected physically by the changes in the magnetosphere?

ALL the "sensitive" people I know are DOWN hard...at first we're like...FOOD poison..ah, not...we did not all eat together...bowels going wild, nausea, exploding heads, psychic craziness, dizzy when standing, sleeplessness...I had so much psychic stuff ALL day yesterday I thought..I cannot take this it was overwhelming....

We are using Reiki, crystals, and drinking lots of water to get balanced...is there a media link that explains these symptoms? If so, please post it so I can pass it around to everyone who is affected.

8 minutes for the light to reach the Earth, I'm fairly sure. But sub-light speed CME particles can be more than a day.

What is interesting to me is not so much the intensity of earth directed CMEs/solar flares, but rather the potential for a weakened state of the magnetosphere to exacerbate impact effects.
