Man uses chain saw in US mountain lion attack
[link to my.earthlink.net]

BILLINGS, Montana - A Colorado man used a chain saw to fight off an apparently starving mountain lion that attacked him during a camping trip in northwestern Wyoming with his wife and two toddlers.

Dustin Britton, a 32-year-old mechanic and ex-Marine from Windsor, Colorado, said he was alone cutting firewood about 100 feet (30 meters) from his campsite in the Shoshone National Forest when he saw the 100-pound (45-kilogram) lion staring at him from some bushes.

The 6-foot tall, 170 pound (183-centimeter tall, 77 kilogram) Britton said he raised his chain saw and met the lion head-on as it pounced - a collision he described as feeling like a grown man running directly into him.

"It batted me three or four times with its front paws and as quick as I hit it with that saw, it just turned away," he said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Wildlife officials said Sunday evening's attack about near Cody was highly unusual because mountain lions are reclusive by nature. Only eight cases of mountain lions acting aggressively toward humans have been documented in Wyoming over the last decade.

"It's very, very rare" for lions to attack, said Wyoming Game and Fish spokesman Warren Mischke. "We're still trying to investigate why this lion would behave this way."

The wounded animal retreated after Britton inflicted a six-inch to eight-inch (15 centimeter to 20 centimeter) gash on the lion's shoulder, leaving him with only a small puncture wound on his forearm.

The mountain lion was shot and killed Monday after it attacked a dog brought in to track the animal, which was 4 to 5 years old. Authorities say it was in poor physical condition and appeared to be starving.

After Britton's confrontation, he and his wife, Kirsta, decided to spend the night in their pop-up camper with their two children rather than risk packing up with the lion still on the loose.

Wildlife agents were called the next morning after Britton told a passing U.S. Forest Service employee about the incident.

Tests for rabies and other diseases came up negative, but officials said they were continuing to analyze the animal for other potential diseases.

Ever notice how the wildlife officials say the same shit time after time-"Oh this is rare-this is unusual blah blah blah! When your in the wild your in the wild and animals that'll tear you appart while your still breathing are out there. Black bears, lions, wolves, grizzlies, even the jaguar is here in the states. The best defense is a good offense. Don't just carry a gun! Carry a knife that'll do deadly damage in a hurry and a club that could crack a bull's cranium from side to side. End its life if an animal attacks you! Most people die from the stupidity of denial-deliberately the victim of authoritative trance as body parts are consumed from the living soul. You have the right and duty to not only defend yourself, but to do it visciously against anthing that attacks you! How much more effective is a proper sword than an improper bullet. The man above did not have victim written on him-if you have erase it now!

It's probably rare in Wyoming because there aren't many cougars and there aren't many people.

In British Columbia, Canada, and especially Vancouver Island, there are a lot of cougars and a lot of people, and I get the impression that attacks aren't rare at all.

Wonderful trout fishing in the river. It's my favorite place in the world.

It's a wild place. I've seen grizzly fishing in the river. I once fished a tributary to the Shoshone back into the woods about a mile and I had my eyes and ears on alert for a lion. Fortunately didn't see one. I always carry my 357 on my hip when I'm in that area fishing. My largest river trout, a 23' cutthroat, was caught right at Wapiti.

Starving animal huh?
It was starving?
I love how the writer attempts to make the animal the victim, right away in the cheesy piece.
Hopefully theres video of this guy taking care of buisness!!

What a great tool-turned weapon to use in that situation!
He must of felt really good revving that chainsaw as they circled each other.

I don't believe it. A 100lb mountain lion is not a starving mountain lion. This man provoked it because he felt threatened in his own mind, and felt empowered by the chainsaw.

Apparently early summer is the time of year yearling cougars are kicked out of the maternal unit and have to fend for themselves. The mothers are raising a new brood and while daughters sometimes help with this the year-old toms are just a liability. Almost all the attacks are caused by year-old toms who have trouble adjusting to life without mom.

Damn you wouldn't think that animal would go near that kind of noise.
Pardon me for interrupting your premature celebration, but I thought it only fair to give you a sporting chance as you are new to this game.

A 100lb mountain lion is not a yearling. Avg weight for an adult male is 93lb.

Re: Man uses chain saw in US mountain lion attack
maybe the cougar just had a hangover and wanted the guy to shut up with the chainsaw already......
Someone said earlier in thread that guns arent permitted in state parks....I thought they were now, but maybe thats just federal parks.....and why cant i bring a gun to protect myself...but this guy can bring a chainsaw...to a state park.... You cant protect yourself, but you can kill any tree or disturbe any environment you wish.

That's what I'm thinking....

Doesnt seem like a mountain would go any where near the noise of a chainsaw.....

I dont know, the whole story doesn't make much sense, really.......

Odd behavior for a cougar. They usually attack from the rear.
