The composition of the waters, and the movement, and the growth, and the removal and restitution of bodily nature, and the splitting off of the spirit from the body, and the fixation of the spirit on the body are not operations with natures alien one from the other, but, like the hard bodies of metals and the moist fluids of plants, are One Thing, of One Nature, acting upon itself. And in this system, of one kind but many colours, is preserved a research of all things, multiple and various, subject to lunar influence and measure of time, which regulates the cessation and growth by which the One Nature transforms itself.

And saying these things, I slept, and I saw a certain sacrificing priest standing before me and over and altar which had the form of a bowl. And that altar had fifteen steps going up to it.

Then the priest stood up and I heard from above a voice say to me, “I have completed the descent of the fifteen steps and the ascent of the steps of light. And it is the sacrificing priest who renews me, casting off the body’s coarseness, and, consecrated by necessity, I have become a spirit.”

He answered me in a weak voice saying, “I am Ion, Priest of the Adytum, and I have borne an intolerable force. For someone came at me headlong in the morning and dismembered me with a sword and tore me apart, according to the rigor of harmony. And, having cut my head off with the sword, he mashed my flesh with my bones and burned them in the fire of the treatment, until, my body transformed, I should learn to become a spirit. And I sustained the same intolerable force.”

And even as he said these things to me and I forced him to speak, it was as if his eyes turned to blood and he vomited up all his flesh. And I saw him as a mutilated image of a little man and he was tearing at his flesh and falling away.

And being afraid I woke and considered, “Is this not the composition of the waters?”

I thought that I was right and fell asleep again. And I saw the same altar in the shape of a bowl and water bubbled at the top of it, and in it were many people endlessly. And there was no one whom I might question outside of the bowl. And I went up to the altar to view the spectacle.

And I saw a little man, a barber, whitened with age, and he said to me, “What are you looking at?”

I answered that I wondered at the boiling water and the men who were burning but remained alive.

And he answered me saying, “The spectacle which you see is at once the entrance and the exit and the process.”

I questioned him further, “What is the nature of the process?”

He spoke aloud, looking at the tablet, “I counsel all those in mortification to become calm and that each take in his hand a lead tablet and write with his own hand and that each bear his eyes upward and open his mouth until his grapes be grown.”

The act followed the word and the master of the house said to me, “Have you stretched your neck up and have you seen what is done?”

And I said that I had and he said to me, “This man of copper whom you have seen is the sacrificial priest and the sacrifice and he who vomited out his own flesh. To him was given authority over the water and over those men in mortification.”

And when I had seen these visions, I woke again and said to myself, “What is the cause of this vision? Is this not the white and yellow water, boiling, sulphurous, divine?”

And I found that I understood well. And I said that it was good to speak and good to hear and good to give and good to receive and good to be poor and good to be rich. And how does the Nature learn to give and to receive? The copper man gives and the water-stone receives; the thunder gives the fire that flashed from it. For all things are woven together and all things are taken apart and all things are mingled and all things combined and all things mixed and all things separated and all things are moistened and all things are dried and all things bud and all things blossom in the altar shaped like a bowl. For each, by method and by weight of the four elements, the interlacing and separation of the whole is accomplished for no bond can be made without method. The method is natural, breathing in and breathing out, keeping the orders of the method, increasing and decreasing. And all things by division and union come together in a harmony, the method not being neglected, the Nature is transformed. For the Nature, turning on itself, is changed. And the Nature is both the nature of the virtue and the bond of the world.

And, so that I need not write to you of many things, friend, build a temple of one stone, like ceruse, like alabaster, like marble of Proconnesus in appearance, having neither beginning nor end in its building. Let it have within, a pure stream of water glittering like sunlight. Notice on what side the entry to the temple is and take your sword in hand and seek the entry. For thin-mouthed is the place where the opening is and a serpent lies by it guarding the temple. First seize him in your hands and make a sacrifice of him. And having skinned him, cut his flesh from his bones, divide him, member from member, and having brought together again the members and the bones, make them a stepping stone at the entry to the temple and mount upon them and go in, and there you will find what you seek. Retracing my steps, I thereupon ascended the way many times. And on returning, I could not find the way, and becoming discouraged, not seeing how to get out, I fell asleep.

And I saw in my sleep a certain little man, a barber, wearing a red robe and royal garments, and he stood outside of the place of the mortifications and said, “What are you doing, Man?”

I said to him, “I stand here because I have missed every road and am lost.”

He said, “Follow me”.

And going out, I followed him. And being near to the place of the mortifications, I saw the little barber man leading me and he cast into the place of the mortifications and his whole body was consumed by fire.

Seeing this, I fled and trembled from the fear and I woke and said to myself, “What is this that I have seen?” And again I took thought and determined that this barber man is the man of copper. It is necessary for the first step to throw him into the place of the mortifications. My soul again desired to ascend — the third step also. And again, alone, I went along the way, and as I drew near the place of the mortifications, again I got lost, losing sight of the path, and stood, out of my mind.

And again I saw an old man of hair so white my eyes were blinded by the whiteness. His name was Agathodaemon. And the white old man, turning, looked on me for a whole hour.

He did not turn toward me but hastened to go on the right way. And going and coming in this manner he quickly effected the altar. As I went up to the altar I saw the white old man. For from the great energy of the mortifications his eyes became full with blood.

And he opened his mouth and said, “I am the man of lead and I am withstanding an intolerable force.”

And then I woke out of fear and sought in myself the cause of this fact. And again I reflected and said to myself, “I understand well that thus must one cast out the lead — truly the vision is concerning the combination of liquids.”

And again I knew the theophany and again the sacred altar and I saw a certain priest clothed in white celebrating those same terrible mysteries and I said, “Who is this?”

And answering he said to me, “This is the priest of the Adytum. He wishes to put blood into the bodies, to make the eyes clear, and to raise up the dead.”

And again I fell asleep for a while and while I was mounting the fourth step I saw one with a sword in his hand coming out of the east. And I saw another behind him, holding a disk, white and shining and beautiful to behold. Dead barber's home yields creepy stash

Police searching the home of a deceased St. Francis barber who claimed he was involved in murders of two boys 50 years ago found child pornography, newspaper clippings and fliers on missing children, bondage devices and paintings depicting child torture.

However, no physical evidence connecting the man to any murders was discovered during the search of the Bay View home, and Milwaukee police said they cannot prove Vernon Seitz was involved in any child homicides or missing children cases.

"We've exhausted all the leads in this case. This is not an active investigation," Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said Tuesday.

"If we receive information from someone that gives us a concrete lead to follow, we certainly will, but at this point, there is no such information that has been shared with us."

Still, news of the search results traveled quickly to the Twin Cities, after several of the items in Seitz's Bay View home and St. Francis barbershop were linked to the name of a boy missing from there since 1989.

The search of Seitz's home in mid-December yielded a number of disturbing discoveries, including books on how to perform cannibalism, bondage devices, newly poured cement in the basement and elevated piles of dirt in the yard, according to a police affidavit used to obtain a search warrant.

According to the affidavit, Milwaukee police found Seitz, 62, dead of apparent natural causes in his home in the 900 block of E. Conway St. on Dec. 15. A detective had been sent to interview Seitz after being told by Milwaukee psychiatrist Victoria Fetter that he wanted to confess to his involvement in the boys' murders in 1958. (Fetter said Seitz told her the killings happened in 1959.)
Police findings

While investigating Seitz's death, police found the newspaper clippings and fliers, photographs of boys posing nude in a sexually suggestive manner and a painting of two small, nude boys being tortured by adults.

A handgun was recovered and the books on cannibalism also included a copy of one entitled, "Eat Thy Neighbor: A History of Cannibalism," according to a police inventory report.

Police jack-hammered the basement and also searched Seitz's business, Vern's Barber Shop, 4243 S. Packard Ave., where they found a poster of Jacob Wetterling, a Minnesota boy abducted in 1989.

Videotapes of Jacob were found at Seitz's residence.

The boy's mother, Patty Wetterling, told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that Seitz came to visit her twice soon after the abduction. He claimed to be a psychic wanting to help and had even given her a painting of Jacob.

"He seemed to care, and he shared that he had his own personal reason to care," she said, noting that Seitz had had an abusive incident happen to him in the past, which she declined to speak of further.

"That's really not uncommon for people who came forward to talk to us. We heard that a lot," Wetterling said.

Wetterling stressed she did not want to jump to conclusions and noted that many people like Seitz had come to visit her after the abduction received national attention.
Accounts differ

Fetter's account of Seitz's claims differed slightly from the account in the police affidavit.

In an interview, Fetter said she treated Seitz for 11 years.

During that time, he told her of an incident in 1959 in which he was abducted while at a zoo in Racine with his family. Seitz said he had been abducted, put into a vehicle and blindfolded before being sodomized and beaten.

He also told her that he shot and killed a 14-year-old boy because his abductors threatened to kill him if he did not carry out the shooting and that he saw his abductors shoot and kill another boy.

Seitz told Fetter that his abductors released him the same day, and he told her that the entire incident lasted seven or eight hours.

Fetter said she "tended to" believe Seitz's story, "largely because he never contradicted himself. These things do happen. I mean, they're not unheard of. . . . He was always very consistent in his story, which sort of gave it credence."

Fetter said doctor-patient confidentiality rules prevented her from contacting authorities about Seitz's claims that he had killed the 14-year-old boy in Racine.

But in November, Seitz asked Fetter to contact Racine police and set up a meeting with them so he could confess to the shooting that he said he was forced to commit.

After Seitz's death, Milwaukee police contacted Racine police, but Racine police did not find any evidence that the killings or abductions that Seitz had described had taken place, Schwartz said.

Milwaukee police also interviewed some of Seitz's relatives, who said they knew nothing about the abduction and killings that Seitz had described.

Seitz had a fascination with missing children and young boys, Fetter said.

"He told me that although he liked little boys, he knew that you can't touch little boys, so what he did was paint them nude," Fetter said. "He didn't tell me about kiddie porn or anything. . . . If my patient lusts for boys but knows that he would get in boiling hot water if he did anything, then he can paint the pictures. That won't hurt anybody."

Seitz also claimed to be a psychic and traveled throughout the Midwest offering his services to the families of missing children, Fetter said.

Seitz was friendly - almost too polite, Fetter said - but she also said he "was no angel."

Fetter said she was appalled by the items that were found in Seitz's house.
House boarded

At Seitz's home Tuesday, many windows were boarded up. A hand-printed sign in faded ink on the front door stated, "You have just been photographed by an infrared camera. Photos go to police, since recent robbery invasion. Call first before coming here."

A neighbor who refused to identify herself said the windows were being boarded up because Seitz had planned to move to Racine. Neighbors said he owned the house and had lived there for a long time.

"He was nice enough, that's all I'm going to say," the woman said.

Near Vern's Barber Shop in St. Francis, Lynne Bartholomew, owner of Lynne's Scizzory, a hair salon next door, said she knew Seitz for nine years.

"He would come in and ask for a cup of coffee and tell me about his life, which was pretty scary, actually," Bartholomew said.

She said Seitz told her he was abducted from the Racine zoo as a boy by men who molested him and forced him to shoot and kill another boy.

Bartholomew said Seitz also claimed to have shot and killed a man who robbed him in his home three years ago and that he had killed two men in Chicago some years ago.

Bartholomew said Seitz had a particular interest in boys that made her and some of her customers "uncomfortable."

She also said he had a strong interest in Jacob Wetterling and had a laminated poster of Jacob in his barbershop.

The poster was seized by police after Seitz's death, she said.

Bartholomew said Seitz told her that he had seen a psychiatrist regularly since his alleged abduction, which, he told her, "ruined my life," she said.

Asked whether she believed that Seitz had committed any crimes, she said: "I don't know. I'm real torn. I knew this nice person who was very weird."

Many critics continue to view Prospero's influence upon the human characters largely in terms of magic. We have treated of Shoemakers' Black from the ancient and the modern standpoint.

We must now briefly consider with Dioscorides the subject of Scriveners' Black, or Writing Ink.


The methods of its manufacture which are described by Dioscorides, are, however, quite obsolete. We now compound ink for writing in a very different way, namely, from Vitriol, Gall, Gum, and in other fashions, as our clerks have reason to know, seeing how inks vary with the ingredients that compose them. It would be permissible to classify writing ink into natural and manufactured. The first is an extract well known to all scriveners, namely, Sepia, derived from the Cuttle-fish, on which consult Dioscorides, Pliny, and Nicander. It is also obtained from Eruca, a kind of plant which some call white Mustard, on which also consult Dioscorides in his 1. 2. The manufactured species, according to the same writer, are these:

1. From the Resin of Pine Trees.

2. From the Soot of other Resins, and Corrosives of Painters.

But among us manufactured ink is obtained:

1. From Stone, which we shall treat of in the section De Paigite.

2. ? From burnt Bark (ex carta combusta --- but there is no such word as Carta).

3. From the Seed of the Alder.

Many families of drowning victims are comparing notes and discovering similarities. Bill and I just realized that victims are being recovered with their clothes, wallets, college ID cards, but not their religious neck chains. So far, we know of missing crosses, Saint Christopher medals and Saint Patrick medals.



Why didn’t we realize this before? To each family, a missing piece of jewelry may seem insignificant or they may not even realize it is missing. Of the families that we’ve asked so far, only one told us that their son’s jewelry was not missing. His neck chain was not adorned with a religious symbol or medal.

In my research, I came across an article published in the NY Daily News in 1998. It compares the mysterious deaths of Patrick McNeill, Joshua Bender, Lawrence Andrews and Peter Caragiulo. Patrick, Joshua and Lawrence were each recovered in water. I was familiar with their cases, but I was not aware of Peter’s story. He was found in an NY subway tunnel with a fractured skull. This is what struck me about the NY article:
