Emergency email from my bank!
I got the following email today from Teleweb Email Alerts:

You have received a new message from your bank. You can view this message by logging on to the bank's internet banking website.

This email is automatically generated. No response is required.

I thought it was a scam but checked my banks web site just in case.

Sure enough, In bold red letters :"EMERGENCY INFORMATION"

The article details their Business Continuity Plan.

I live in a small town of about 1200 people. This is a small locally owned bank.

I think the FDIC is getting all banks ready.

Re: Emergency email from my bank!
this is it folks....

as predicted by me....in the spring...

bank holiday by late august or early september...

it looks like late august...

get your money out now....

and buy some gold if you can...

basically what you want to do is split it three ways...

cash....gold or silver....

food and water.....

do what you can....

if you still want to hedge your bets...

it`s your choice...

but definetley buy some food and water....

just in case...

if this thing goes down by the 31...

the supermarkets will be next....

so don`t get caught in the turmoil...

go now and do some shopping for food...

buy what you can...

what you can afford....

noone is pushing you...

avoid the crowds that will come later...

Beyond one's own mind there is no dazzling light to come shining in from outside to wake one up. If one recognizes one's own intrinsic State as pure from the beginning and only temporarily obscured by impurities, and if one maintains the presence of this recognition without becoming distracted, then all the impurities dissolve. This is the essence of the Path-namkhai norbu.

Why is there a legend about the descent of Christ into hell? The Teacher addressed the lower strata of the astral world, saying: Why, by cherishing earthly thoughts, bind oneself eternally to Earth? And many revolted in spirit and rose higher.

That looks like a message that was meant for the business division of the bank, not for bank members. Freudian slip? I wonder who pressed "SEND".

Checked the link, it's for real. Kinda makes you wonder, are they the next to be at the bad end of the FDIC this Friday, are they talking about just any emergency, weather or power related, or are they just getting ready for the BIG one!

It will be interesting to see if more banks start posting a continuity poan like this...but it is sure strange with FDIC's reports due out. I'm not taking any chances.

I worked for a bank a while back. They were required to have a business continuity plan, and they had to test it on a regular basis.

Odd that you got that email, but not odd that the banks have disaster recovery procedures in place - they have to.

What is their business continuity plan?
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 120720

Checked on a few banks, looks like it is a common thing for banks to have, most likely weather, terrorist related types of events. Seems to have evolved after 9/11/01.

NatCity Investments Business Continuity Policy
NatCity Investments, Inc.
NatCity Investments, Inc. (NatCity) and our clearing firm First Clearing, LLC (FCC) have developed Business Continuity Plans designed to ensure that you are not significantly affected as a result of an emergency or business disruption. We are providing these documents to give you summary information on these plans.
FCC acts as NatCity's clearing firm and your assets are maintained at FCC. The business continuity plans for NatCity and FCC are designed to address key areas of concern — including but not limited to the following:

* Data back-up and recovery;
* All mission critical systems;
* Financial and Operational assessments;
* Alternate means of communication between FCC, NatCity and customers;
* Alternate means of communication between FCC, NatCity and employees;
* Alternate physical locations of employees;
* Critical business constituent, bank, and counter-party impact;
* Regulatory reporting;
* Communication with regulators; and
* How NatCity and FCC will ensure that customers have access to their funds and securities in the event either firm determines it is unable to continue its business.

Since events creating business disruptions may vary in nature and scope, NatCity and FCC have anticipated scenarios in which the following are affected:

* A primary NatCity or FCC building at a headquarter location
* A branch location
* A city-wide area
* A regional area

Regardless of the scope of potential disruption, NatCity intends to continue to provide service to our clients. In the event where a primary building or business district is affected, NatCity has several backup facilities located from 5 to 50 miles from our headquarters. These facilities have 24-hour security services. Should one of the facilities be affected by a disruption, others can be used to help restore operations.
In the unlikely event of a citywide or regional disruption, NatCity has established several recovery sites located from 50 to 150 miles from our headquarters that can be used to restore time sensitive functions as soon as key employees are relocated to the facility. Additionally, as a subsidiary of a The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., NatCity would intend to take advantage of any available facilities of affiliates that may be located in unaffected areas. In the event that any such disruption occurs we have developed alternative service arrangements, systems, locations, and contingency plans to ensure that service is quickly restored.
At a minimum, NatCity’s business continuity plan is reviewed, updated and tested on an annual basis. Additionally, our primary internal and external application providers periodically conduct testing of their own back-up capabilities to ensure that, in the event of an emergency or significant business disruption, they will be able to provide us with the critical information and applications we need to continue, or promptly resume our business.
The Business Continuity Disclosure Policy of our clearing firm, FCC, is also below for your review.
First Clearing, LLC
First Clearing, LLC (“FCC”) acts as the clearing firm, providing back-office and trade support for the broker-dealer that you maintain an account with. Your assets are maintained with FCC. Accordingly, FCC is furnishing this document to you to provide information about our efforts to ensure that impact to your business is minimized in the event of an emergency or disaster.
Securities Industry regulations require each member firm to create and maintain a business continuity plan reasonably designed to meet its obligations to its clients or other counter-parties. In accordance with these requirements, FCC has designed a business continuity plan to address possible scenarios in efforts to minimize any service impact to our introducing firms or their clients.
In keeping with the regulatory requirements, the business continuity plan for FCC is designed to address key areas of concern - including but not limited to the following:

* Data back-up and recovery;
* All mission critical systems;
* Financial and Operational assessments;
* Alternate means of communication between FCC, NatCity and customers;
* Alternate means of communication between FCC, NatCity and employees;
* Alternate physical locations of employees;
* Critical business constituent, bank, and counter-party impact;
* Regulatory reporting;
* Communication with regulators; and
* How NatCity and FCC will ensure that customers have access to their funds and securities in the event either firm determines it is unable to continue its business.

Since events creating business disruptions may vary in nature and scope, FCC has anticipated scenarios in which the following are affected:

* A primary NatCity or FCC building at a headquarter location
* A branch location
* A city-wide area
* A regional area

Regardless of the scope of potential disruption, FCC intends to continue to provide service to its introducing firms and their clients.
In the event where the primary building or business district is affected, the firm is fortunate to have a divided corporate presence in the Richmond, VA area, with two primary buildings located approximately twenty miles apart. Both buildings are served by UPS systems and have 24-hour security services. Should one of the primary buildings be affected by a disruption, the other building can be used to help restore operations.
In the unlikely event of a citywide or regional disruption, FCC has established a recovery site approximately 150 miles from its headquarters that can be used to restore time sensitive functions as soon as key employees are relocated to the facility. Additionally, as a subsidiary of a large financial institution, FCC would intend to take advantage of any available facilities of other affiliates that may be located in other geographical regions. In the event that any such disruption occurs, we have developed alternative service arrangements, systems, locations and contingency plans to ensure that any service is quickly restored.
FCC has identified several computer applications with Mission Critical or High criticality ratings and has documented this within the business continuity plans. Our primary application provider, Thomson Beta Systems Inc. has conducted successful testing with FCC, generally two or three times per year since November 2000. Finally, through its parent company, FCC utilizes data centers, located outside of Virginia, which regularly perform disaster recovery testing.
At a minimum, the FCC business continuity plan is reviewed, updated and tested on an annual basis. Additionally, our primary internal and external application providers periodically conduct testing of their own back-up capabilities to ensure that, in the event of an emergency or significant business disruption, they will be able to provide us with the critical information and applications we need to continue or promptly resume our business. When testing our plan, we review the recovery time and resumption time period for all mission critical systems.
Making sure that any type of disruption does not unduly impact our introducing firms or their clients is extremely important to us, and our business continuity plan is designed to allow us to continue to provide the quality service you have come to expect from FCC.

well if emergency happens in a region then you will need to get to a region that is not destroyed, if possilbe youay be fuel if you have to trave a log distance til yo reach a region with fuel. smal bills are wise to bu stuff at time savers if lec is knocked oput ..like snaks pape products and such .. .. most banks have out of region backup systems for customers to use ATM when they get to safe unharmed region. . Hurricane katrina was a good learning curve for america in worst case possible situation. 80 miles wid 80 miles long of utter destructio just in south east louisiana not coutin mississipi and parts north louisiana parts of north missiappi . trees even Felled up to Tennessees border from Katrina . just be prepared to bring what you can to start life over again somewhere ese til u can get home again one day ..like coffeepot mirowave dishess sheets blnkets small tv mixer food processor toaster oven .kitchen utensils . croock pot elec skillet . you can get timy motel room a ruff it for awhile if you can cook somehow . winter summer attire .basic tools meds toilerties .. i like a small travel trailor in that case . leave ahead of crisses storms, that way you got your start over stuff with you and a place to live in the meantime. ....A 27 ft long travel trailor would work good for a family and usually sleeps 8 . 21 ft would work for couple . 27 ft has full bath a seperate bedroom . . hjst saying ave small cash bills for an event like that 1 s and 5 s for junk food stops .
