Alqaeda praised Allah with bomb that killed 95 people and wounded almost 600
BAGHDAD — Al-Qaeda claimed twin truck bombs outside two ministries in Baghdad last week that killed 95 people and wounded almost 600, according to a statement posted on Tuesday on an Islamist website.

“By the grace of God, the sons of the Islamic State of Iraq launched a new attack on the wounded heart of Baghdad to destroy the bastions of faithlessness and the citadels of the atheism of the apostate Safavid (Shiite) government,” said a statement on the shamikh.net site.

Re: Alqaeda praised Allah with bomb that killed 95 people and wounded almost 600
The statement, issued in the name of the Islamic State of Iraq, seen as the Iraqi branch of Al-Qaeda, said its targets were the ministries of foreign affairs, finance and defence, as well as the offices of Baghdad province.

"We repeat that we will target the pillars of the hypocritical state and those that help it," the statement added.

The group expressed its "wishes for any Sunnis accidentally wounded to recover and of those who died to become martyrs."

It added that there was "no question of ending the jihad (holy war)," despite the danger to civilians, saying "it would be better for the citizens of the Islamic state to perish to the very last one than to be governed by (Shiite) renegades."

Al-Qaeda is a deeply traditional Sunni Muslim organisation and sees members of the Shiite strand of Islam, a majority in Iraq, as its enemies.

The claim comes only hours after Iraq ordered home its ambassador to Damascus and demanded that Syria hand over two senior Baathist leaders it accuses of ordering the bombings.

The bomb attacks, which also wounded 563 people, spurred Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to pledge a security overhaul and also led to the arrest of several senior security officials.

The explosions came just minutes apart outside the foreign and finance ministries, as a car bomb and spate of mortar attacks added to the carnage in the capital, which has been under Iraqi security control since US troops withdrew from towns and cities on June 30.

It was the bloodiest day in Iraq since February 1, 2008, when bombs at Baghdad pet markets killed 98 people.

Recent attacks in the capital have appeared to target various ethnic groups in what is seen as a bid to reignite the sectarian violence which engulfed Iraq in 2006 and 2007.

Despite a reduction in violence across the country in the past year, attacks on security forces and civilians remain common in Baghdad, the restive northern city of Mosul and in the ethnically divided oil city of Kirkuk.
