I just want to know what that light on the desktop means when it is flashing and it makes that noise. Because it is clearly not the CPU...

How do I even find out what activities it is up to? Ctrl+Alt+Del gives me nothing useful.

I closed everything and restarted, and it is still just sitting here CONSTANTLY sputtering away at some unknown task.

if its got a flashy light on the front and makes a noise, its probly the hard disk getting read. there is a progarm called "resource monitor" yu could open in windows and then set it to look at hard disks to see if it is the hard disk being read. or in linux just run the iostat program

iostat -h /dev/sda 5
