A dusty plasma is a plasma containing nanometer or micrometer-sized particles suspended in it. Dust particles may be charged and the plasma and particles behave as a plasma,[1][2] following electromagnetic laws for particles up to about 10 nm (or 100 nm if large charges are present). Dust particles may form larger particles resulting in "grain plasmas".

Dusty plasmas are encountered in:
Industrial processing plasmas
Space plasmas

Dusty plasmas are interesting because the presence of particles significantly alters the charged particle equilibrium leading to different phenomena. It is a field of current research. Electrostatic coupling between the grains can vary over a wide range so that the states of the dusty plasma can change from weakly coupled (gaseous) to crystalline. Such plasmas are of interest as a non-Hamiltonian system of interacting particles and as a means to study generic fundamental physics of self-organization, pattern formation, phase transitions, and scaling.

The temperature of dust in a plasma may be quite different from its environment.

The electric potential of dust particles is typically 1–10 V (positive or negative). The potential is usually negative because the electrons are more mobile than the ions. The physics is essentially that of a Langmuir probe that draws no net current, including formation of a Debye sheath with a thickness of a few times the Debye length. If the electrons charging the dust grains are relativistic, then the dust may charge to several kilovolts [1]. Field electron emission, which tends to reduce the negative potential, can be important due to the small size of the particles. The photoelectric effect and the impact of positive ions may actually result in a positive potential of the dust particles.

In conclusion, all magnetic fields encountered in nature are generated by circulating currents. There is no fundamental difference between the fields generated by permanent magnets and those generated by currents flowing around conventional electric circuits. In the former, case the currents which generate the fields circulate on the atomic scale, whereas, in the latter case, the currents circulate on a macroscopic scale (i.e., the scale of the circuit).

Now that is very interesting indeed... Atoms are either balanced or unbalanced with an overall charge due to charged particles. The trinity that make up an atom... electrons orbiting the nucleus of a neutron and a proton.

Moving electrons create current, so you could say that electrons power the nucleus. A flowing current will create a magnetic field. This is just 1 atom.

Are you suggesting that instead of the eternal cycle of - vs + trying to balance out, they need to be merged? Is that even possible... I don't think good and evil can be represented by charges, how do we tell which one is which? Electricity creates life, but we call it negative.



A dense plasma focus (DPF) is a plasma machine that produces, by electromagnetic acceleration and compression, short-lived plasma that is so hot and dense that it becomes a copious multi-radiation source. It was invented in the early 1960s by J.W. Mather and also independently by N.V. Filippov. The electromagnetic compression of a plasma is called a pinch. The plasma focus is similar to the high-intensity plasma gun device (HIPGD) (or just plasma gun), which ejects plasma in the form of a plasmoid, without pinching it.

Applications

Intense bursts of X-rays and charged particles are emitted, as are nuclear fusion neutrons,[1] when operated in deuterium. There is ongoing research that demonstrates potential applications as a soft X-ray source[2] for next-generation microelectronics lithography, surface micromachining, pulsed X-ray and neutron source for medical and security inspection applications and materials modification,[3] among others.

For nuclear weapons applications, dense plasma focus devices can be used as an external neutron source.[4] Other applications include simulation of nuclear explosions (for testing of the electronic equipment) and a short and intense neutron source useful for non-contact discovery or inspection of nuclear materials (uranium, plutonium).

Positive characteristics

An important characteristic of the dense plasma focus is that the energy density of the focused plasma is practically a constant over the whole range of machines, from sub-kilojoule machines to megajoule machines, when these machines are tuned for optimal operation. This means that a small table-top-sized plasma focus machine produces essentially the same plasma characteristics (temperature and density) as the largest plasma focus. Of course the larger machine will produce the larger volume of focused plasma with a corresponding longer lifetime and more radiation yield.

Even the smallest plasma focus has essentially the same dynamic characteristics as larger machines, producing the same plasma characteristics and the same radiation products and radiation characteristics. This is due to the scalability of plasma phenomena.

I guess I guessed right with the plasma link to ball lightning. I am not the only one either. Did you know they were GIVING these machines to DEVELOPING countries. Why would they be doing that unless they were fundamentally essential for a reason? Nuclear physics is the understanding of MATTER converted to energy. Plasma physics is understand how ENERGY is converted into matter. E = MC squared. The public are afraid of nuclear, because they have little real understanding of it. So it is not surprising that governments and scientists are keeping quiet on such matters. Now you hear the word nuclear and you are forced to think about the "dangerous" radiation and death and bombs. But nuclear is more than that. Not all radiation is dangerous.


The Asian African Association for Plasma Training, or AAAPT, is an organization/network founded on 7 June 1988 to provide facilities for plasma research by small research groups in developing countries. Originally, it consisted of nineteen institutions from 12 countries, but it has now grown to 41 institutions from 23 countries.

The AAAPT [1] is an affiliated network of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), receiving funding for its collaborative activities. Assistance in the form of travel and other fellowships had also been received from the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), UNESCO and several other organisations. The bulk of the contributions for its activities had come from the scientists from the member institutions in terms of expertise, time and effort and from the member institutions, in terms of infrastructural support.

Activities

Since its formation its primary success has been the coordination of the United Nations University / International Centre for Theoretical Physics Plasma Fusion Facility (UNU/ICTP PFF) network [2] which carries out research on 12 UNU/ICTP Dense Plasma Focus systems in 9 countries. The UNU/ICTP PFF was developed during a UNU Training Programme on Laser and Plasma Technology in 1985-86 [3] at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. During initial tests, this plasma focus system already proved to be very cost effective, yet producing plasmas of such intense conditions that copious multi-radiations, including fusion neutrons were emitted [4]. Six sets were constructed and given to the participants to be used as the core facilities to be installed in their new plasma focus laboratories back home. Due to this and subsequent training program, new plasma focus laboratories were started at Delhi University, Quaid-i-Azam University[5], Yogyakarta Nuclear Research Centre, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Prince of Songkla University and more recently in University of Zimbabwe and Chulalongkorn University[6]. Several more research groups were strengthened and the influence of the AAAPT's training project using the UNU/ICTP PFF has spread to plasma focus laboratories in Egypt, Syria and even to Chile, Poland and Italy. The Plasma Groups of Malaysia [7] and Singapore [8]have been prominent in the leadership of the AAAPT.The collaborative research work has produced more than 20 PhDs, 50 Masters and hundreds of research papers[9].

A numerical simulation package, the Lee Model [10], was developed for the network but has proven successful to simulate all plasma focus devices. Recently numerical experiments using this code have uncovered a pinch current limitation effect and given a fresh outlook to neutron scaling laws from sub-kJ to multi-megajoule devices. The latest version is now downloadable as Universal Plasma Focus Laboratory Facility at INTI-UC [11]. In association with the AAAPT, the Institute for Plasma Focus Studies [12] was founded on 25 February 2008 to promote correct and innovative usage of the Lee Model and to encourage dense plasma focuus numerical experiments.

Yes, it became painfully obvious that the black hole theory was wrong, even that idiot cripple Hawking admitted it, when they observed jets of matter and energy being expelled from both polarities. He's spent his whole life advancing a lie. I wonder if stars ever truly die... and lets not forget in order to die it has to be ALIVE.

We know stars explode and transform. We know they gather around them matter and energy, we know they release it. So do stars ever truly die or do they transform and then get reborn? Dense particles in a state of plasma + the high energies from space = fusion. The more denser the particles the more stable the reaction. It also depends on the energies involved and the elemental composition of the particles.

We have tons of space "dust" aka charged particles fall onto our planet every year, this dust is low density and is everywhere around our solar system and most likely the universe. Some people call it dust, some people call it cosmic rays, but regardless of the label they are simply charged particles and ionized atoms. They have always interacted with our Earth's atmosphere, most likely caused the formation of our solar system and everything within once the density of these particles rose high enough.

And now we have Fluffy. A high density particle cloud. Any high energy EM radiation passing through it will interact with it, if the energy is high enough it could ignite it and turn it into a hot plasma. That ignition is merely speculation, we cannot know unless we know more, but it is a possibility.

IMMENSE FLOWS OF CHARGED PARTICLES DISCOVERED BETWEEN THE STARS

BEAVERTON, OR.--A plasma scientist and a radio astronomer announced the discovery of charged particle flows in interstellar space at the 1999 International Conference on Plasma Science in Monterey, California. The discovery culminated decades of speculation and debate whether or not electricity existed on the scale of hundreds of thousands of light years in the interstellar space between the stars.

According to Anthony Peratt, Scientific Advisor to the United States Department of Energy and a plasma researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, the discovery was made by computer analyzing large amounts of data gathered by radio telescopes from regions in space known to be occupied by 'neutral clouds of hydrogen.' The data was processed and the results obtained by radio astronomer Gerrit Verschuur, Physics Department, University of Memphis. Verschuur found that the 'neutral hydrogen clouds' were not completely a neutral gas of hydrogen and other elements, but rather consisted of charged particles of electrons and ions, called 'plasma.'

The name plasma as applied to charged particles was borrowed from blood-plasma by Nobel laureate Irving Langmuir in 1923 because the particles interacted collectively in a lifelike manner in his laboratory experiments. "Verschuur analyzed nearly two thousand clouds, principally from the Aericibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico, but also from other radio telescopes scattered around the globe," said Peratt. Verschuur had previously found, under high resolution computer processing, that the 'clouds' were not clouds at all but were instead filaments of material which twisted and wound like helices over enormous distances between the stars.

Peratt said that the filaments between the stars are not visible themselves but are observable with radio telescopes that can observe space at much longer wavelengths than are visible to the human eye. Prof. Per Carlqvist, a researcher at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, estimated that the interstellar filaments found by Verschuur conducted electricity with currents as high as ten-thousand billion amperes.

"The individual filaments in space are often called Z-pinches. These Z-pinches occur when current-carrying plasma 'pinches' itself into a filament by a magnetic field the current produces around the plasma. Z-pinches, such as those produced on the Sandia National Laboratories 'Z' machine, are among the most prolific producers of X-rays known,Ó cited Peratt.

The United States Department of Energy funded Z-machine at Sandia has surprised the scientific community during the last few years by breaking all records in the production of high intensity X-rays from wire filaments converted into plasmas by million-volt pulses. Such filaments have already been discovered in our own solar system. For example, the aurora on Earth is known to be caused by million ampere currents flowing down the Earth's magnetic field lines at the northern and southern poles while similar were found by planetary explorer spacecraft to connect the planet Jupiter with its closest satellite Io.

That such currents existed on a much larger scale outside the solar system and beyond the reach of spacecraft has been a topic of conjecture among astronomers and space plasma scientists. According to Igor Alexeff, President of the Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society, "It's not unusual that neutral hydrogen in space should show such well organized current structures; plasma also acts in a lifelike and intelligent way in laboratory experiments and in naturally occurring plasmas such as lightning."

Plasma scientists have long known that 99.999 percent of all observable matter in the universe is matter in the plasma state, often referred to as the fourth, or fundamental, state of matter. In contrast to the first three states of matter most familiar to us on Earth: gases, liquids, and solids; plasmas generate and react strongly to electromagnetic fields. Plasmas are also prodigious producers of electromagnetic radiation. The Sun is a plasma, as are all of the stars and interstellar space, although for the latter, it was thought that the plasma was quite tenuous and spread out until the discovery of the filaments.

On Earth plasma exists in the form of lightning, fluorescent bulbs, flames, the flow of currents in conductors and semiconductors, and the aurora. The earth actually is encased in a protective shell of plasma called the ionosphere and magnetosphere, shielding life from high-energy cosmic and other electromagnetic rays from space.

The discovery was called "Exciting," by S. T. Lai, a researcher at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Hanscom, MA. Lai, an authority on a phenomena called "critical ionization velocity," who noted that the data fell precisely where predicted by the late physics Nobel laureate Hannes Alfvén (1908-1995), who in his theory about the origin of planets in 1942, calculated that if a neutral cloud in space fell through a magnetized plasma, the neutral gas would itself become ionized at discrete velocities.

Alfvén predicted that the signature of his plasma theory in space would be the observation of filaments and his discrete velocities. AlfvÈn calculated that the critical velocity of all the elements in the periodic table could be grouped into just four velocity bands, the first at 51 kilometers per second from hydrogen, the second at 34 kilometers per second from helium, the third centered around 14 kilometers per second from oxygen, neon, and carbon, and a fourth centered around 6 kilometers per second from calcium, sodium, and other heavy elements. ÒThe observed data show precisely these velocities,Ó remarked Peratt. ÒDiscrete velocity components are seen 51, 32, 14, and 5 kilometers per second. Moreover the lines cascade from higher velocity to lower velocity, as they must as the radiotelescope is sighted closer to a filament according to the theory,Ó he said.

M. Garcia, a physicist and electrical engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and C. Chan, director of the Plasma Science Laboratory at Northeastern University suggested the possibility of of using new high-power laser and generator facilities at the National Laboratories to further study the filamentation processes and critical velocity effects occurring in the interstellar medium. In any event, a consensus that space is far more electric than earlier imagined suggests a revision of our understanding physical processes in space as far ranging as the formation of planets to the sources of high energy particles and radiation.

ÒElectrical currents seem to play a significant role,Ó concluded Peratt. A full description of the discovery will appear In the September 1999 issue of the Astronomical Journal and the December 2000 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science.

Stellar Physics in the Laboratory

According to our manner of looking at the matter, every star in the universe would be the seat and field of activity of electric forces of a strength that no one could imagine. We have no certain opinion as to how the assumed enormous electric currents with enormous tension are produced, but it is certainly not in accordance with the principles we employ in technics on the earth at the present time. One may well believe, however, that a knowledge in the future of the electrotechnics of the heavens would be of great practical value to our electrical engineers. It seems to be a natural consequence of our points of view to assume that the whole of space is filled with electrons and flying electric ions of all kinds. We have assumed that each stellar system in evolutions throws off electric corpuscles into space. It does not seem unreasonble therefore to think that the greater part of the material masses in the universe is found, not in the solar systems or nebul\ae, but in``empty" space.

Today, strangely enough, the field of laboratory astrophysics is being paced by large experiments intended to delve into the physics of nuclear weapons. The reason is that both energetic space plasma phenomena and nuclear weapons belong to a class of science call high-energy-density physics. New experimental techniques, improved simulations codes, and experimental diagnostics developed for the United States Department of Energy's program to keep the nation's arsenal of nucelar weapons safe, secure, and reliable in the absence of underground testing is indirectly benefiting our understanding of the universe.

The experiments are at the cutting edge of technology and physics and involve both intense laser beams and pulsed power facilities. The most powerful laser project under construction is the National Ignition Facility (NIF), a 1.2 billion dollar facility slated for completion in 2003, in which 196 lasers beam will deliver nearly 2 megajoules to a millimeter sized target, reproducing the plasma temperatures within stars. For scale, an oil-tanker is parked in front of the facility.

In addition to the high energy densities promised by NIF, plasma astrophysics today is done on another type of facility called a pulsed-power generator.These include Sandia's 500 kilojoule Saturn and the more powerful 2 megajoule Z-machine as well as Los Alamos' Pegasus and extremely high current machine called Procyon. Later, yet higher power machines such as the 20 megajoule X-1 generator, so called after the bright source in the constellation Cygnus A, and Atlas, a large pulsed power generator used to study instabilities in the various states of matter will be added to the arsenal of Z-pinches machines for which an appreciable fraction of machine useage will be devoted to plasma astrophysics.

I love ancient greek myths. It almost seems like they were poetic records of the night skies. The battles between the gods cosmic events. Zeus being the god of gods, with lightning. They are myths but they have truth in it, we just don't have the correct context in which to apply them to.

Beautiful filament-systems are often shown by the astonishing development of the modern astronomy. Most of these filaments have an exact circular cross section. Filaments have the same interesting characteristics from a diameter of 0.01 mm to that of many 1000 of light-years. Filaments are incorrectly seen to be of plasma, however, particles move in only one direction in them, often against gravity. In this non-thermal (fifth-) state of matter, particles have up to 10^16 -times higher energy than those in the hottest stellar plasma. The corona-problem and hundreds of other problems of astrophysics are solved at once.

THE PARTICLES OF THE HIGHEST ENERGY : THE COSMIC RAYS

Cosmic ray particles have a clear energy-limit at 10^21 eV. Why? Similar to the upper limit of the temperature-scale at about 10^9 K, we can find an upper limit of the particle energies at 10^26 eV, by 21 orders higher than the thermal limit of 10^5 eV in supernovae. This can be explained as follows: The supernova-implosion produces a positively charged neutron star which partly inherits the positive charge excess of the presupernova-core (equ. 2). The outermost surface layer of a neutron star is covered by one layer of protons. (A second layer cannot be fixed, it is repulsed by the first one.) The electric charge of this „mono-proton layer is easy to calculate. On a sphere of an R radius of 8 km, protons are fixed via strong nuclear force. (Their volume is less than 1 cm³!). One proton needs an area of (10-15)² m². The highest Q electric charge is given by the relation () of these areas:

Probably, this is the highest voltage of the Universe (Körtvélyessy 1999). It is easy to calculate that this very concentrated positive charge in quick rotation produces the strongest magnetic field of the Universe in the order of 10^10 Tesla. This electric model of the neutron star claims that the magnetic axis is identical to the rotational axis - exactly as Fig. 8-9 show. If an atom or a meteor falls in the direction of the neutron star, it will be attracted by the very strong gravity of the star. But at a distance of e.g. 800 m, this falling neutral matter will be torn to electrons and ions by the huge electrostatic field. The electrons are attracted onto the positive surface (and remain there) and the ions are repulsed in the jets (Fig.8-9) along light-years, accelerating to the highest velocities in the Universe. These ions are the cosmic ray particles! This electric model explains that the heavy ions and not the light electrons are the cosmic ray particles. Less than 0.1% electrons are in the cosmic rays! Electrons would be easier to accelerate thermally or by a shock-wave. However, all known non-electric processes are too weak. The supernova SN 1987a produced a neutrino-peak but no cosmic ray-peak.

As these continually produced cosmic ray particles fly in space, the active (positive) Sun repulses these positive ions; their flux is lower during solar maximum and after every flare (Forbush effect). Recently, NASA speaks about a proton storm during a mass ejection of the Sun. Flying ion- and electron-filaments divert these ions in space and they do not show their origin: the neutron stars. This electric model can also be deduced. The two nuclear forces have only a very short radius. Gravity (one of the two forces of infinite radius) can only attract. Only the positive or negative charge remains as repulsing accelerator! The highest possible concentration of electric charge can only be positive, because only the protons can be fixed on a neutron star. The strong nuclear force of these protons is more than 300 times stronger than their mutual electrostatic repulsion. Electrons (as leptons) could be fixed only with gravity which is 10^39 times too weak. The supernova i.e. the highest power-density of the Universe can fix protons onto the neutron star which is the highest concentration of active matter. Therefore, the positive neutron star is the strongest possible accelerator of particles. The acceleration-force of the ions continually pushes back the neutron star. Perhaps a calculation will show a big relativistic mass of these ions and explain the velocities of the pulsars (see arrows of 100 km/s and 150 km/s in Fig. 8-9). The electric repulsion-force does not stop after the ejection! This model explains the huge matter emission of pulsars

States of Matter
There are five main states of matter. Solids, liquids, gases, plasmas, and Bose-Einstein condensates are all different states of matter. Each of these states is also known as a phase. Elements and compounds can move from one phase to another phase when special physical forces are present. One example of those forces is temperature. The phase or state of matter can change when the temperature changes. Generally, as the temperature rises, matter moves to a more active state.

Cosmic rays ARE in the state of plasma, I thought we established that already. Low density plasma. Cosmic rays can be anything from electrons to protons and any ionized element. If anything the 5th state would be super cool, close to absolute zero. Like Rydberg matter or bose-einstein condensates. However they may very well turn out to plasma, just at a different temperature since everything else is the same.

As for the Chinese elements, metal is also seen as void in Japan. I'll have to talk to my Chinese friend about the elements and see what she says. It's very interesting to know that they saw the elements different to how we see them. I always assumed they were the same thing.

What is a BEC?

A BEC is a coherent collection of particles obeying Bose-Einstein statistics and all occupying the same quantum mechanical state. Since the particles in a BEC are all described by the same quantum mechanical wave function, they behave as a single quantum entity. Closely related macroscopic quantum phenomena include superfluidity and superconductivity. Though the existence of a BEC was postulated early in the previous century, it was not until 1995 that Bose-Einstein condensation was achieved in the laboratory using magnetically confined alkali atoms. For an extremely dilute gas of atoms relevant to current experiments, the transition to such a state occurs at submicrokelvin temperatures. Indeed, the coldest temperature achieved to date, three billionths of a degree above absolute zero, is required in order to form a BEC of 85 Rb atoms.

Temperature just means the level of excitation an atom experiences. The higher the energy, the higher the excitation and with enough heat you can make the atoms/particles break free of their bonds. It just makes the atom vibrate faster.

Unfortunately when dealing with quantum mechanics, it's more magic than science at times... It's still a new area of research and things sure are strange at those scales. At least in accordance to what we know and understand. We haven't observed any natural BECs yet, and we haven't created enough of the stuff to actually do much work on it yet either. I think one of the far strangest things we have found is the need for an observer, when a particle gets observed it changes the way it behaves. Not to mention a particle being able to exist in different spaces at once. Time travelling particles, what else!
