Quoting: CountryGirlThis may be useful to know when grocery shopping, if it's a concern to you. The whole world is afraid of China-made "goods". If the first 3 digits of the bar code are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA. 471 is Made in Taiwan. This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public. Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA", So they don't show from which country it is made. However, you may now refer to the bar code. Remember, if the first 3 digits are: 690-692 ... then it is MADE IN CHINA 00 - 09 ...USA & CANADA 30 - 37 ...FRANCE 40 - 44 ...GERMANY 47 ...Taiwan 49 ...JAPAN 50 ...UK Buy USA & CANADIAN, by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number. I did some quick searching, and there are country lists available on the internet, with the caveat that the numbers represent the country in which the code was assigned. A company can request a number from any country that it has an office in it. So an American company will have an American prefix, even if the actual product is made elsewhere. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 773494 United States 01/20/2010 07:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In November, I bought a 40 lb sack of Pedigree dog food. Both our dogs got really sick ($350 vet bill) and we discovered it was the food. There was no phone number on the sack. We googled the food and discovered they had plants all over the world. The 20 lb sack clearly states it is made in Canada, but heaven only knows who manufactures the larger bags. Since that time, I have noticed that almost all the doggie treats sold by the grocery store (Kroger) are made in China. Yet if I look at the treats at PetSmart or PetCo, most are still made in the US. Be careful about where your pet food comes from. |

What got me started wondering where my food was coming from - was the frozen fish. So much of it said 'farm raised in China'. And i had read that they feedd the fish all sorts of contaminated 'food'. So i wondered then, what about other groceries we buy? Seems we can't win for losing. LOL Gal 4:16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? Anonymous Coward User ID: 852424 United States 01/20/2010 07:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well, one of the problems I have with food produced in the U.S. is that we have no labeling requirement if the food is processed and the INGREDIENTS come from other countries. So you can buy anything from the U.S. and it can be from anywhere else and you wouldn't know it, if they processed it in any way. And the USDA and FDA are not testing the food imports from China as they come in to the U.S. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 870100It shouldn't. I buy herbal tea. I know the code is there. I doesn't spook me. All I need to be concerned about is how I live my life so when I die I can meet God with confidence. Is it a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy? Maybe, maybe not. Even if it is it doesn't change how I live my life good or bad. I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. I pay more attention to whether or not I am getting a good deal on the price than the UPC code. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 786257 United States 01/20/2010 09:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't think this information is entirely accurate. Quoting: CountryGirlRight now, I'm drinking a Boulevard Dry Stout. It is brewed and bottled right in Kansas City, MO. Barcode says: 726959901426 That is US code. Think about it. 7 2 6 00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA the number above 726959901426, breaks down last this 7-26959-90142-6. The 26959 is the vendor number. Each manufacturer has its own number, some have several to describe sub companies, or even brands within a company. For instance, Tylenol, made by McNeil, has a vendor number of 3-00450. The 90142 in the number above, describes the product, whether it be a case or unit (sometimes they are different, sometimes the same). the trailing 6 in the number above, does not mean anything in my world, scanners don't even read that number. The beginning number 7, is an extender because they ran on of numbers starting with 0 (used to be all UPC's starting with zero). So the vendor number above is 7-26959. Items from mexico will have 13 digits, instead of the normal 11 in the USA, as in 7-269591-901421, with no trailing number. That being said, I am still not sure how you get a country of origin out of these codes, with the first three digits being part of the vendor descriptor. |
