Worlds first chess-playing robot defeats its creator

Russian inventors have created the worlds first chess-playing robot. This is the worlds first chess robot of this level that can play at such speed. It has already defeated several prominent grand masters, designer Konstantin KOSTENYUK told RIA Novosti.
The chess-playing robot can move the pieces across the board and play against three opponents simultaneously. It can also play against itself endlessly. The robot consists of a three-finger gripper, which is connected to the control system, an electric chessboard, special hardware and software.
The electronic chess player has already won several tournaments but the robots father, as Kostenyuk refers to himself, believes that his creation still needs improvement. The inventor intends to install a four-finger manipulator to make it easier for the robot to grip chess pieces.
The designers dream is that his brainchild will one day be able to speak and that the world will have an electronic chess champion.

We will hold rapid-fire chess competitions, similar to Formula One but for robots, Kostenyuk said. The chess robot that defeats all its opponents will become the worlds absolute champion. Humans will only be allowed to participate if they can compete with robots, he added.

The designer is also trying to find a home use for the robot. When not participating in chess tournaments it could help out with housework: washing the dishes or doing laundry. It will do it without any reminders, Kostenyuk believes.
