I took the opposite approach. I was an AC for years, and recently joined the masses.

If you were extra vigilant you would get yourself an ip blocking program like peerblock and use that in conjunction with your firewall. You might even run a custom hosts file that reroutes quite a few troublesome IPs to localhost. Now chances are you don't know what that means but Google is your friend. You have been warned.
