I dont understand the importance of sororities/fraternities in the college scene

Its a way to cruise through college on the reputation of others.

Fuck that. if you are too stupid to make it through on your own merit, you shouldnt be there.

For a lot of them its about partying, + the whole brotherhood/sisterhood stuff. Just because you don't understand it, does not mean its not important to other people. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with having at it with the sororities. Especially with all the sororities... O_o

Organizational grade peer pressure.

nothing really to get... if you are a sociable person, its an easy way to get into a group of friends. whether its a party frat/sorority or one that actually contributes something to the community.

personally I didnt want to go through the BS and rules, so I just became friends with them all and partied like a rockstar.

i'll be honest. a lasting memory was watching some good girl (trust me she wasnt that highschool slut) freshman chick offered an immediate acceptance if she got tag teamed by two frat guys. crazy stuff man, she just took on both dudes

Well, let's see, you provide some good starters, but there are more...

For one thing, you can get the young people in a position that is compromising, and have blackmail material to hold over them if or when they get into positions of power in society.

Also, you can recruit people from them for the ABC agencies, as these people make the best candidates seeing they are smart but still susceptible to peer pressure.

The greek houses are a great way to find sacrifices for satanic cults within the governments of the world, for, there is nothing more satisfying, for the evil ones, than taking out a young person with so much potential.

The greek houses also hide the real cults, ATO, Skull and Bones.

And, did you ever wonder where so much porn comes from? That's right, most of it comes from these greek houses. It is a great way to corrupt people so that they more easily lose what little morality they might have had before they got into college.

just as i thought, i appreciate the response. i hate seeing all these signs on campus saying RUSH (insert elitist greek letters) and people talking about all this bullshit.

Some of them are. Many modern sororities/fraternities are fun copies of the original idea and do not count, but the serious ones definitely are. I have children who have joined, or have their eye on the serious ones, because of the ethic they claim. There is no doubt from my research into who they are, who runs them and their history, that eventually all my kids will become members of "secret" societies.

Its just an easy way to meet people and network for the future. Half of my friends were in them and half weren't. It provides people an instant social life that they can then modify to their personality.

My friends were that were in them were NO way slutty and were very involved in school. Don't get me wrong, parties are definitely part of the whole thing. However, saying mean things just to "confirm a stereotype" isn't right either. Bottom line, there are good and bad people in every house and there are good and bad people that don't pledge. :)

I think it has to do with the school/what part of the country you're in.

For example, in the North there is nothing sacred about a sorority house--they have crazy parties with people hooking up everywhere just like frat houses. In the South however, guys are usually not allowed past the foyer unless its a special occasion like when you can bring a guy to dinner or something.

Watch an SEC or (southern) ACC football game--you'll see tons of people dressed up as if they were going to Churchill Downs--those are sorority girls and frat boys. People say its stupid to dress up for football games--I would like to have heard them say that to Bear Bryant lol.

In the South, being greek is about tradition and hanging on to the GOOD things about years past. Also, if you attend certain colleges, going GREEK is the only way to be around "normal" people...everyone else is a total nerd or foreign. Frats and sororities also stay on your ass about studying/making good grades as you transition into the college world. It teaches you how to balance an active social life with rigorous academics in some cases--which ultimate prepares you for "grown-up" life for a lot of people.

Of course there are always bad seeds, but for the most part, Greek organizations are harmless and bring a certain necesity to the college experience...

It is a brotherhood, like family.

These guys are out of the home for the fist time and away from parents and siblings and from their high school chums.

As well you have to remember housing, food, text book, and beer are all cheaper with group buying power.
