“Mt. Baekdu will erupt in 2016,” North Korean leader Kim Jong-il said.

Kim explained workers of a mine in the town of Musan, North Hamgyeong Province, about the mountain’s probable eruption in 2016, calling for production of iron ore as soon as possible, according to a civil human rights group against North Korea.

Due to the eruption, Kim added that “Residents living within a given area from the mountain will have to be evacuated.”

Actually, I posted that article in support of your thread - how the hell would anyone know exactly when Baekdu will explode? But they're obviously concerned!

One things certain. There's a huge body of water there that will flood a very wide area when it does go bang.

So much is going on in the world right now I think everyone should be watching the entire worlds events each day.
If we focus on just one thing, we will miss the bigger picture.
I believe all the active volcano's are showing increased activity due to the magnetic poles shifting faster, thus creating a pull on the magma. If I am correct, and I believe I am, we will only see more and more increases in activity as well as massive eruptions.

We have to keep in mind that North Korea is a communist country that is very secretive about anything that happens within. Unlike most countries, we are not privileged to most information they have on whats going on within, this also includes information their scientists have gathered.
Due to this, we have to look for the smaller clues.

All of you are missing a very plausible scenario.

First of all, there is a bit of folklore that connects the volcano the two generation dynasty. Dunno if it is spread by Kim Jong-il or if he just tries to play off of it, but part of it involves the leader being born of the volcano.

Right now, Kim Jong-il is nearing his shelf life. He needs a successor. What better way to give his son a bona-fide sign of the gods entry into leadership than to pack the volcano.. or an area near it, with explosives and possibly one of those diminutive nukes that he is so fond of?

Personally, I have been skeptical of the NK nuke tests, but it is possible that they sort of worked. A mineshaft stuffed full of ANFO, booster charges and some reactor trailings can give a reasonable simulation of a nuke. Especially if you can't get direct access to the site to do proper testing. For the sake of argument, lets say he was successful with the tests.

Try this scenario.

Jong-il croaks. Volcano "erupts", the kid takes control. Any attempt at a power grab has to deal with that folklore about the gods, the volcano, and the Kim Jong-il family.

The "Mandate of Heaven" does play an important role in this and Chinese culture.
