Aurora Visible In New England Tonight: Here's When To Watch

New England could be treated to "an impressive aurora display" late Monday night into early Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service said the geomagnetic storm activity that Sunday night gave way to a stunning sky display across the northern part of the country looks like it will continue tonight.

The NWS said the best chance for those in central New England to catch this could be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. The Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G1 geomagnetic storm alert, which means many of the most northern states may have a shot tonight, but it won't travel much farther south than that.

Glitch in neutron star reveals Its hidden secrets

Neutron stars are not only the densest objects in the Universe, they also rotate very fast and regularly. Until they suddenly don’t.
If parts of the neutron star interior start to move outwards, the star spins faster. This is called a “glitch,” and it’s providing astronomers with a brief insight into what lies within these mysterious objects.

THE TRICK TO SEEING PERSEID METEORS: The Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight, Aug. 12-13. Bright moonlight will interfere with its visibility, though. What's the trick for seeing a good show? Wake up early--very early--about an hour before sunrise when the Moon is low and the shower's radiant is high in the sky. Forecasters expect dozens of Perseids per hour to streak across the briefly-dark predawn sky.

Talking of #ParkerSolarProbe, we're closing in on our third solar encounter now. Currently "only" 0.52AU from the Sun,
traveling a leisurely 42km/s ( 94,000mph), but in just 18 days will be at 0.17AU and over 90km/s (200,000mph)!

THE NEXT STREAM OF SOLAR WIND: Earth is passing through a void between streams of solar wind. The next stream lies ahead. Estimated time of arrival: Aug. 20-21. The gaseous material is flowing from a southern hole in the sun's atmosphere. Its grazing impact could spark geomagnetic activity just below the level of a G1-class storm.

WATCH A COMET DIVE INTO THE SUN: The solar system has one less comet. Yesterday, Aug. 15th, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) watched a comet dive toward the sun. The dirty snowball went in--but it didn't come back out again.

The comet, R.I.P., was a member of the Kreutz family. Kreutz sungrazers are fragments from the breakup of a single giant comet many centuries ago. They get their name from 19th century German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who studied them in detail. Several Kreutz fragments pass by the sun and disintegrate every day. Most are too small to see, but occasionally a bigger fragment like this one (~10 m to 50 m) attracts attention.

Because of their common parentage, sungrazers often come in clusters. For this reason, it wouldn't be surprising to find yet another one in the offing.

REPORT: THE WORLD’S FIRST SOLAR ROAD IS AN ABSOLUTE DISASTER

In 2016 France turned a one-kilometer stretch of roadway into the world’s first solar road. And three years later, the trial project has turned out to be an absolute disaster, French newspaper Le Monde reports.

The photovoltaic panels that made up the 2,800 square meter (just over 30,000 square feet) of road surface have deteriorated beyond recognition, according to the paper. The panels have reportedly started peeling off the road and splintering.

The K7RA Solar Update

No sunspots were visible over the recent reporting week, Thursday through Wednesday, August 8 through 14.

According to Spaceweather.com, 67% of the days so far in 2019 have been spotless, and for all of 2018 it was 61%. In the previous solar minimum in 2008 and 2009 the spotless days ran 73% and 71%, respectively.

Solar flux has been minimal and unremarkable, with average daily solar flux changing only to 67.4 from 67.2 last week.

Predicted solar flux for the next 45 days is likewise unremarkable, at 67 from August 15 until September 29.

Predicted planetary A index is 8 on August 16, 5 on August 17, 6 on August 18, 8 on August 19-20, 5 on August 21-25, 8 on August 26-28, 5 on August 29-31, then 38 and 14 on September 1-2, 5 on September 3-5, 8 on September 6-8, 5 on September 9-11, 8 on September 12, 5 on September 13-21, 8 on September 22-24, 5 on September 25-27, and in a recurrence of geomagnetic activity reported in last week’s bulletin and also predicted for September 1, 38 on September 28 and 14 on September 29.

VOLCANIC GASES REACH THE STRATOSPHERE AGAIN:

For the second time this year, a volcano has injected sulfurous gases into the stratosphere. NASA satellites find that emissions from the Ulawun volcano in New Guinea reached the stratosphere on Aug. 3rd, following a similar eruption from the Raikoke volcano in the Kirul Islands on June 22nd. This latest ejection of SO2 could produce volcanic sunsets in the tropics and the southern hemisphere for months to come.
