SOLAR ECLIPSE THIS WEEKEND:
The sun is about to turn into a "ring of fire." On June 21st, the Moon will pass directly in front of the sun, producing an annular solar eclipse over Earth's eastern hemisphere. Movies, timetables, and links to live webcasts are featured on today's edition of Spaceweather.com.

LUNAR OCCULTATION OF VENUS: Yesterday morning (June 19th) in Europe, astronomers witnessed a lunar occultation of Venus in broad daylight. Surrounded by blue sky, the Moon eclipsed the second planet. Didier Favre of Brétigny-sur-Orge, France, photographed the event moments before Venus disappeared behind the sunlit edge of the Moon:

"This was an extraordinary astronomical event--the first lunar occultation of Venus I I have observed in 13 years," says Favre.

At the time of the occultation, both the Moon (4%) and Venus (8%) were thin crescents, adding to the beauty of the event. For more images, browse the realtime photo gallery!

COMET NEOWISE IS APPROACHING THE SUN: Some comets like it hot. Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) is plunging toward the sun for a close encounter near the orbit of Mercury on July 3rd. The comet has just entered the field of view of SOHO's C3 coronagraph, which, for the next week, will monitor how the comet reacts to the sun's intensifying heat.

COMET NEOWISE, LOOKING GOOD: Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) is plunging toward the sun for a close encounter near the orbit of Mercury on July 3rd. SOHO coronagraphs are monitoring the approach, and it's looking good. The comet has brightened to 3rd magnitude, which would make it a naked-eye object when it emerges from the sun's glare in mid-July. SOHO will be monitoring the comet for the rest of the week, so stay tuned for updates.

When the remaining working Starlink Launch 1 (V0.9) sats began orbit lowering in May it seemed like they might be headed for deorbit, but they now seem to be parking at 430-450 km.

A Snake-like Filament Hangs While A Solar Storm Launches | Space Weather News 06.25.2020

This week our Sun continues to keep us on our toes, albeit with subdued activity. We have a partly Earth-directed solar storm on its way that should graze Earth around the 27th. This storm might be intensified by some fast solar wind that should follow. However, it is doubtful any storming will be strong enough to cause much of a disturbance. Any aurora will likely be sporadic and only at high latitudes, so aurora photographers shouldnt get too excited.

Also, a couple of promising bright regions have fizzled on the frontside of the Sun, resulting in the solar flux dipping back into the high 60s. Unfortunately, this means poor radio propagation on Earth's dayside, which is sad news for those emergency radio operators participating in the ARRL field day this weekend. The best news though is for GPS users, as the weak storming and low solar flux means GPS reception should be decent all over the globe.

COMET NEOWISE UPDATE: Good news for sky watchers. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) is monitoring Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) as it passes by the sun this week. Not only is the comet still intact, but also it has brightened to magnitude +2.4. This means it is likely to be an easy naked-eye object when it emerges from the sun's glare in mid-July.

A small sunspot belonging to Cycle 25 popped up in the southwest quadrant during the past 12 hours. So far it is not a threat for noteworthy solar flares. Very quiet solar conditions should continue.

SOLAR WIND, INCOMING: Minor geomagnetic unrest is possible on June 30th and July 1st when a stream of solar wind gently buffets Earth's magnetic field. The gaseous material is flowing from a small hole in the sun's atmosphere. Antarctic sky watchers should be alert for auroras in austral winter darkness.

THE RAPID BRIGHTENING OF COMET NEOWISE: Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) is passing by the sun this week–and it’s looking good. The comet just experienced a sharp increase in brightness recorded by coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO).

"During the transit, Comet NEOWISE increased in brightness from magnitude +4 to +1.8–an almost 8-fold jump," says planetary scientist Qicheng Zhang of Caltech, who analyzed the images. "If the comet maintains this brightness, it will be visible to the naked eye when it emerges from the sun’s glare in July."

COMET NEOWISE AT PERIHELION: Today, Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) is at perihelion (closest approach to the sun) near the orbit of Mercury. Fierce solar heat has brightened the comet so much, it was visible this morning in dawn twilight.

How bright is Comet NEOWISE? It's hard to know because there are no reference stars in the glow of dawn for comparison. However, experienced observers are making educated guesses. The consensus seems to be between magnitude +1 and 0--that is, very bright.

Although the comet is technically very bright, you probably can't see it without using binoculars or a telescope. Blame the twilight. The situation could improve in the mornings ahead as the comet begins to move away from the sun. Wake up early and start looking about an hour before local sunrise. Venus and the bright star Capella can help you triangulate the position of the comet.

BRIGHT MORNING COMET: Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) is doing something very rare: Shining through the rosy glow of dawn. "Pretty clear skies allowed me to capture Comet NEOWISE from the ephemeral moment of its rising to the moment I was able to see it with naked eyes--even if still very hardly--on July 4th July," says Horálek.

Yesterday, July 3rd, Comet NEOWISE passed by the sun near the orbit of Mercury. Intense solar heating boosted its brightness to magnitude +1 (now +2), allowing it to be seen despite its close proximity to the sun. This development has turned NEOWISE into one of the most remarkable comets in years.

LAST GASP OF SOLAR CYCLE 24: A small sunspot has emerged near the sun's equator: AR2766. The sunspot's low latitude and magnetic polarity identify it as a member of old Solar Cycle 24. The decaying solar cycle still has some life left in it--but only a little.
