SOLAR PROMINENCE: Today the sun is quiet -- except for one location near the sun's southwestern limb. There, a beautiful prominence is rising into space. Luigi Morrone photographed it this morning from the Amalfitan Coast in Italy: https://imgur.com/nZESwRx Prominences are clouds of plasma held up by solar magnetic fields. The magnetic infrastructure of this one is unstable. Other amateur images submitted today show it twisting sharply at the base; it might soon twist off completely. Got a solar telescope? Monitoring is encouraged. [ link to www.spaceweather.com (secure)] Quoting: Simple27 That solar event is completely awesome. Question for you solar folk. I watched the video the other day of a lot of interaction of solar events with our planet and it seems like there is nothing to cause it and I heard a couple people say that it was probably a gamma ray burst. I had a severe headache for 2 days in then I heard of a bunch of people on this site saying the same thing is that possible. Gracias
